Take all of your wasted honor
Every little past frustration
Take all of your so-called problems,
Better put 'em in quotations

[Repeat: x8]
Say what you need to say

Walking like a one man army
Fighting with the shadows in your head
Living out the same old moment
Knowing you'd be better off instead,
If you could only

[Repeat: x8]
Say what you need to say

Have no fear for giving in
Have no fear for giving over
You'd better know that in the end
Its better to say too much
Then never say what you need to say again

Even if your hands are shaking
And your faith is broken
Even as the eyes are closing
Do it with a heart wide open

Say what you need to say, say what you need to say
Say what you need to say, say what you need to say
Say what you need to say, say what you need to say
Say what you need to say, say what you need to say
Say what you need to say, say what you need to say
Say what you need to say, say what you need to say
Say what you need to say, say what you need to say
Say what you need to say, say what you need to say
Say what you need to say, say what you need to say
Say what you need to say, say what you need to say
Say what you need to say, say what you need to say
Say what you need to say, say what you need to say

General Comment:Say by John Mayer stresses the importance of saying what you need to say because you may lose the chance to do so. He finds it necessary to not waste the opportunity to express your feelings, and that keeping them in can cause you ``frustration'' and ``wasted honor''. Being able to speak your mind will enable you to have a clear conscience and not experience any regrets. He refers having the courage to speak up to ``walking like a one man army'', but if you are able to battle and beat the doubts in your mind, then you will end up better off in the long run.

When you do not say how you are feeling, the details end up replaying over and over. Instead of ``living out the same old moment'', get the issues off of your chest in the first place. The lyrics explain that it is a better option to have too much to say than to never state what your feelings are. The song instructs you to open your heart up wide and ``say what you need to say'' regardless of nervousness, broken faith, or a person that is close to being gone. If you do not seize the opportunity, the chance may never come.

General Comment:Cool message. "Cheesy" yeah but hey cheese is good if you can stomach it. I know some people are intolerant to that sort of thing.

(You better get ready to say something
    whatever it may be)

Say what you need to say (x8)

Walkin' like a one man army
Fightin' with the shadows in your head
Livin' out the same old moment
Knowin' you'd be better off instead
    If you could only...
(Fighting a battle alone, with the negative thoughts
of a moment that is keeping you trapped inside, maybe
if you just expressed how you felt it would get better.)

Say what you need to say (x8)

Have no fear for givin' in
Have no fear for givin' over
You'd better know that in the end
It's better to say too much
Then never to say what you need to say again

(Whatever is bothering you just need to say it, once
you get it off your chest you'd feel better, then to
never say anything and have something bad happen.)

Even if your hands are shaking
    And your faith is broken
Even as the eyes are closing
Do it with a heart wide open (wide)

Say what you need to say (x7)
Say what you need to say what you need to

Say what you need to say (I'll see you one day)
Say what you need to say (I'll save you)

Song Meaning:Better put 'em in quotations

What does he mean by that? Trust me, no need to rant, I understand the meaning of the rest of the song, considering he repeats it thirty six times through out the song.

General Comment:I love this song. It's been used in three movies I've seen, "Bucket List", "Everybody's Fine" and "Karate Kid" (the newest one). I finally downloaded it and now it is on heavy rote on my iPod. A simple song yet it has such a heavy message--say what you are thinking before it is too late. Better to get things out in the open if they are bothering you, rather than carrying the burden of frustration all your life.

General Comment:This some is plain and simple. I can really relate to it, like many of Mayer's songs.
He is just making the point that we should speak our minds, and say want we really think.

Walkin' like a one man army
Fightin' with the shadows in your head
Livin' out the same old moment
Knowin' you'd be better off instead
    If you could only...

Say what you need to say (x8)

Here he talks about someone who would feel much better if they could just speak their mind and "say what they need to say" It sounds like they have missed their shot, and are living out the same old mistakes.

John mayer is spelling it out here. Say what you need to say!

General Comment:this song to me is inspiring. of course we all interpret it because of experience, so here's mine..
i had become friends with this boy, we became so close i still don't even understand it and i know this sounds soo lame, i'd probably write someone off for saying this but i just don't know how to explain what we actually were and i'm not one to get all corny, i was always so against the idea of love, but he was so so special to me, we were so the same, so we got along like nothing else. and anyway, of course i couldn't have this boy, he was taken.. but he didn't act like he was, even though nothing actually happened between us thankgod. this boy was 2 grades older than me at school, and i'd always admired him since the first time i'd saw him, when we became close he told me the same thing about me.. we'd talk about how we were always too scared to talk to eachother, and he told me that he had liked me a year before, when he was single.. anyway. when i told him i liked him i used this song, saying that i needed to say it even if it might not have been the right time or whatever else was holding me back wasn't important, because all that was important was him, and that i'd rather say too much, than not admit it to him at all, because i couldn't keep things from him.. so when i listen to this song, months later.. i still get that feeling when i was writing him the letter telling him. in the end, we became too close and decided we couldn't talk anymore which is so dumb.. but i couldn't do it anymore. after almost a year of it i couldn't take it. if anybody else feels like this, i really know how you feel.. it's terrible, but i know i was in love. and i think he was too. even though we don't talk now, i have that gut feeling that it's not over. that's mostly why i don't get upset that it appears to be over, i know it's not. i'm hopeful.

General Comment:This song is incredible. I've just taken a huge step and broken up from my girlfriend. It was something I knew I needed to do because it was doing me no good and as hard as it was, the lyrics of this song are incredibly comforting. It's just the bridge section:

'Have no fear for giving in,
Have no fear for giving over,
You'd better know that in the end,
It's better to say too much,
Than never to say what you eeed to say again...'

I think the song is about being brave with words: when you know you need to tell someone something, you do it, as you know deep down you'll live your life regretting it if you don't. Incredible words and song.
