There were beverages laid out for the party.
There were candy and spices and tri-colored pastas.
The meat carved was drawn from succulent juices
served on platters of the purest gold

I was calm when we arrived at the party.
I spoke with fervor, embracing the evening.
My wife leaned over and she whispered 'I love you'.
I held her close and we danced.

We had the best time at your party.
The wife and I thank you very much (x2)

Cream puffs and bourbon and the music was louder
My wife was competing in a game of chance
The party raged and the guests were screaming
I could have danced all night

We had the best time at your party.
The wife and I thank you very much (x2)

Later on when we were under the covers,
I closed my eyes, then I drifted to sleep.
I dreamt about me, maybe throwing a party,
and just how great that would be.

And I said
We had the best time at your party.
The wife and I thank you very much (x2)

Song Meaning:There are too many direct references to the Aeschylean Trilogy in this song for it to just mean 'the wife and I thank you very much'.

'Tri-colored pastas' and 'platters of the purest gold' are symbolic in Ancient Greek literature for Neo-conservativism. The song is plainly a Nu-Marx conflict of two of the seven deadly sins, namely -Envy and Gluttony.

General Comment:in the lead-up to the song, after the end of "woman and man" you can hear guns firing and a woman making what could either be pain or orgasmic noises... which makes me think it is a swingers party... with platters of purest gold its obviously a classy affair, so some kind of party that perhaps two famous musicians may have attended? it wouldnt surprise me if gene and dean were into that sorta thing?

General Comment:I think everyone is overlooking it...its simply trying to put a situation or image lyrically with an appropriate song style...they are obviously doing a parody of adult contemporary music but now they are the adults going to what seemed to me like 'wine and cheese' type of partys...if they had to write an adult contemporary song what would it be about to fit the mood....a classy adult party with 'tri colored pastas...served on platters of the purest gold'....not sure where swingers tie in you dirty people

General Comment:It's about a heroin addict dreaming about a party when in reality he has no wife and doesn't get invited to parties.

General Comment:This song reflects a marriages mid-life crisis....so the attend this "party" which is actually a "swingers party"....its meant to add some spice and life into their boring and dull marriage.

General Comment:I think no matter what kind of party animal you are, we can all draw some kind of parallel to this song. I don't think it's about some boring couple going to a boring party, it's about people having a wicked time at a mates party, everyone (in their right mind) does it and loves it!
