I'll marry my lover in a place to admire I
Don't have to even ask her I can
Look in her eyes and thank
God that I am forgiven
Or thank all my friends
To say I've been true or they forgotten
And weary my mind is, to
Say the least its been
Awful hard to just stand on my feet, I think
I'll slow down if I am able
I won't drown in the ocean
Or starve in my place at the table
Lucky ones are we all til it is over
Everyone near and far
When you smile the sun it peaks through the clouds
Never die for always be around and around and around
And how is your sister
And what of your brother
Extend hellos to your father and mother
What in the world would cause you any sorrow
Like tea in your loaf and see how
I killed the wheelbarrow I borrowed
Lucky ones are we all til it is over
Everyone near and far
When you smile the sun it peaks through the clouds
Never die for always be around and around and around
Don't have to even ask her I can
Look in her eyes and thank
God that I am forgiven
Or thank all my friends
To say I've been true or they forgotten
And weary my mind is, to
Say the least its been
Awful hard to just stand on my feet, I think
I'll slow down if I am able
I won't drown in the ocean
Or starve in my place at the table
Lucky ones are we all til it is over
Everyone near and far
When you smile the sun it peaks through the clouds
Never die for always be around and around and around
And how is your sister
And what of your brother
Extend hellos to your father and mother
What in the world would cause you any sorrow
Like tea in your loaf and see how
I killed the wheelbarrow I borrowed
Lucky ones are we all til it is over
Everyone near and far
When you smile the sun it peaks through the clouds
Never die for always be around and around and around

Lighten your load. See how I killed the wheelbarrow I borrowed means get in the wheelbarrow & I'll carry you in it even though it will break the wheelbarrow I borrowed.
At least that's what I got from that line.
I'll marry my lover in a place to admire
verse 1: he hasn't been perfect in the past, but he's found the right person and knows that he will reamain true and doesn't want to hurt this person. he doesn't want this person to know that he has been untrue in the past either, probably shame. also, i think it is "or thank my friends..." but i might be wrong, it makes little difference anyway
2nd verse) first 3 lines- big commitment and it's tiring, then "I won't drown in the ocean"=i won't give too much and wear myself out "or starve at my place at the table" or take too little. getting the give/take balance right? that's what i see it as...
chorus bit) he doesn't want it to end, but also is aware that it could "'til it is over"
Verse 3) I feel like this is caring about the person he loves' family. when you love someone, you care that they are happy and therefore care that their family is well etc. last 2 lines is kind of saying "i can take some of the pressure for you" strengthened what he is using to hold his problems, so he can hold the weight of (some of?) hers. or it could be the tipping over of problems, he wants to help rid her of her problems. i'm leaning toward the latter.
corrections (probably already been mentioned):
"or starve at my place at the table"
"lighten your load and see how i keeled the wheelbarrow i borrowed"
Weary my mind is to say the least
its been awful hard to just stand on my feet
I think I'll slow down if I am able
I won't drown in the ocean
For starving my place at the table
I think those stanzas are saying although marriage can be hard he is not going to just give up, he is going to man up and be the best he can.
Also, the wheelbarrow part> he says "lighten your load and see how I keeled the wheelbarrow I borrowed" Keeled means to capsize or dump over, so he is saying see how I got rid of my load that got heavy from other bad habits that he inherited.
Thats my take at least. ;)
To me the song strings together some obviously personal information and evokes a set of feelings that's accessible to anyone - he's in love, amazed (first verse), relieved and realizing he can finally relax (second verse), thankful (chorus), and comfortable (small talk in the third verse).
it's been awful hard to just stand on my feet
I think I'll slow down if I am able
I won't drown in the ocean
or starve in my place at the table."
Absolutely beautiful song. At first I was somewhat disappointed with this album, until I heard this song.
As for a meaning: The beauty of (most) Band of Horses lyrics is that they're really personal and don't have a general meaning. Like they're written directly for the person in question and no one else. Love this song, love this band.
Uhm, to me this is a song about probably a middle-aged man (or someone in that mindset) who fell in love and found someone who loves him back wholeheartedly. They have both gone through struggles. She worked him out of a big one, dealing with drug abuse and an untamed life... or something along the line. The first segment there explains that flawlessly. After meeting her even his friends know that he has changed and gotten over some of his poor choices once falling in love with her. He knows that he has to slow down at some point in his life and become full of responsibilities in order to create a future. Luckily he has her on his side to work through their problems. And he knows how lucky he is. I think the girl he has fallen for still stresses over him a great deal. She wants her life to be picture perfect and doesn't want to deal with the issues she has left behind, like probably something with her family and a problem of the the past... and he just wants to help her achieve that perfection. In essence, they feed off of each other. A perfect match.
I think the song is a cheer up song.
As for the "tea loaf" line - look at it like this:
What are you beating yourself up about? Lighten your load! you have too, because I destroyed your "wheel barrow" with my problems.
get it?
HE loves her and wants to marry her in some place he will admire that anyone would admire, he is forgiven of all sins in her eyes becasue of their love for one another. His friends also see him as a true man, but have they forgotten maybe a time of infidelity?
Marriage is hard and busy and his mind is taking the toll, if he can slow down he will but he wont drown in the responsibility of it.
Lucky he and his wife and possibly family and friends are for their love is so strong it makes those around him feel almost better about themselfs. He loves her so deeply that he cant have a bad day knowing she is around, and around and around. She will love forever in his eyes and in his heart.
The last set is just small talk, asking how her family s, and letting her know that he would lighten her load by carrying a wheelbarrow more like a metaphor for letting her know he will always be there to support her.
