Lyrics for Just A Dream as interpreted by dontwasteyoursong

Just A Dream Lyrics
It was two weeks after the day she turned eighteen
All dressed in white, going to the church that night
She had his box of letters in the passenger seat
Six pence in her shoe, something borrowed, something blue

And when the church doors opened up wide
She put her veil down, trying to hide the tears
Oh she just couldn't believe it
She heard the trumpets from the military band
And the flowers fell out of her hands

Baby why'd you leave me
Why'd you have to go
I was counting on forever, now I'll never know
I can't even breathe
It's like I'm looking from a distance
Standing in the background
Everybody's saying, he's not coming home now
This can't be happening to me
This is just a dream

The preacher man said let us bow our heads and pray
Lord please lift his soul and heal this hurt
Then the congregation all stood up
And sang the saddest song that she ever heard

Then they handed her a folded up flag
And she held on to all she had left of him
Oh and what could have been
And then the guards rang one last shot
And it felt like a bullet in her heart

Baby why'd you leave me
Why'd you have to go
I was counting on forever, now I'll never know
I can't even breathe
It's like I'm looking from a distance
Standing in the background
Everybody's saying, he's not coming home now
This can't be happening to me
This is just a dream

The first time I heard this song, it brought tears to my eyes. Lyrically, the best song on the album, and one of Carrie's best songs of all time.

This song is about an 18 year old girl who was about to get married. Her fiance was in the military, fighting war, and just before the wedding, he was killed.

I think it can be an inspiring song, regarding loosing something/someone.

im pretty sure your lyrics are wrong. i think its...Six pins.. and a shoe, something borrowed, something blue

and:
And the flowers fell out of her hand.

:] this song is amazing and flawless.
it made me cry.
My grandpa was in the military..
and the whole folded up flag thing happened at his funeral.
this song certainly hits home...
in a very personal way.

Hi ScriptedLove, I did a little research today and I think this is the history behind the "sixpence in her shoe" line:

I just heard this song today, and fully listened to the lyrics and I was in awe. I'e never heard such an inspiring peace ever, that caused me to cry. It was really inspirational, and I believe it hits home for everyone. It doesn't have to be war-time, but a simple car accident to trigger emotions. But dealing with the life we have now, it makes you think of how precious life is.

I have no one I know in the war in Iraq, but I guess the reason I teared up was to imagine myself in that position; I couldn't handle it, either. It would be too painful. I really like this song, and I hope she chooses it for a single. It would really be evoking to her audiences. ^^;

wow, such sad lyrics. she thought she'd be going to church for her wedding, not her fiance's funeral. powerful song.

it's the best song on this album. it's so sad. at first, i thought, "ok, this is something i didn't expect from Carrie. this is a love song." then by the end of the song i was bawling like a baby. then i thought "wow, i was completely wrong with the meaning of this song." when i played it for my mom, she took my cd from my hands and loaded it to her phone. now i can't get her to shut it off!!!!! but it's okay cuz this song is great

It's like what angelbehavior18 said. I thought it was going to be a wedding song, even though it starts off with sad slow music. I thought Just a Dream was going to mean her wedding is like a fairytale dream. Then I heard

"She heard the trumpets from the military band
And the flowers fell out of her hands"

and realized what it's about.

This has got to be one of the saddest songs that I have ever heard. Whether or not you know anyone in the war, I think it's a song everyone can relate to in one way or another.

I was just thinking, could the girl in the song have actually been married to the soldier and the funeral is in the same church as the wedding was so she kind of has a flash back. Because I don't think they would have given her the folded up flag if she wasn't his wife.

I love the images flashing directly from the wedding right to the funeral... It gives me the impression that the girl is thinking that instead of being at his funeral, they should be getting married... I love this song so much!

Okay, I know not everyone is familiar with the Military so I will enlighten you a little bit, I am a military spouse of 15 years and in the song when she sings that they gave her the folded up flag, that means that she is his wife, not his fiance or girlfriend. They dont give the flag to someone other than a family member, normally the wife or mother and if there is no mother than the father or brother. It has to be a relative, so what I am thinking is that she starts off with their wedding and then in the second section moves on to the funeral. But she has to be his wife not his fiance or girlfriend. But this confused me too until my husband reminded me of that fact.

Just a Dream is one of the best on Carnival Ride. The song will probably more popularity when it is released to radio on July 21. The music video has already been filmed. Carrie plays the girl in the video and it set in the 1960's.

it is actually "six pence in her shoe." it's considered good luck for a new bride, just like something old, something new, something borrowed something blue. it actually ends this poem with "happy is the bride with six pence in her shoe"

I think they were married, then sometime afterwards she had a dream that she was getting married and went into the church and his funeral was happening rather than his wedding. It could have happened for real, like someone else said, they were married, he died and the funeral was in the same church as the wedding and she was having flash backs, or it could be that it was all just a dream like the title suggests. Kind of like a fear. Something that you are scared to death might happen that surfaces in a dream. Just the thouht of being in this situation warrents a song, or a tangible reminder.
This is a song about how things can change in an instant, and maybe that even though your fiancee could die tomorrow, still plan the wedding. Live life with what you have, not in fear of what you might lose. It is a wake up call for some, to appreciate our loved ones while we have them, and for others it's a reality check, is this a person I would choose to be with even if I knew that he would die tomorrow. Is this a person that adds so much to my life that not knowing them is more of a tragedy than losing them. Of course, it is also, to some, an embodiment of a real life situation. They lost a loved one and were devestated. It is a physical (kind of) remembrance of someone lost. This song just says so much.
