Song Meaning:I have always interpreted the music of this song like this:

When he is resurfacing for air he hears the loud noise of the diving crew and the wind etc of our world (loud guitar parts).

When he dives back down he enters the serene abyss of the ocean. Sound doesn't travel well in water and the quiet parts of the song are when the music most resembles the magical underwater world and you can even imagine the air bubbles floating up. Also the different parts seem to be timed consistently like a diver would do when getting air.

No matter what your interpretation, this song is such a great adventure for the ears and mind!

General Comment:ok so check this out.

i see it as a man sinking below the waves into the ocean. first he encounters a shark, or large creature of that nature. the whale swims off and he continues down. when the music is quiet, he's gazing around in wonder, appreciating everything around him. and then, everything frightning and turbuluent about the ocean is revealed to him. he swims back to the surface, leaving all the terrors (or wonders) behind him.

    pretty sweet, huh?

oh and i can't really tell what he's saying at 3:15. but it's definitely something. and ocean is one word of it.

My Interpretation:when i hear the soft chime like sound of some of this song it reminds me of the wonder i feel about the ocean. we know so little about it that it might as well be the face of a distant planet. the guitar part of this song kind of reminds me of the beautiful dangers of the open ocean. its a perfect harmony of reverence fear and curiosity we feel towards the ocean at least thats how it is for me

General Comment:rather than focusing on lyrics that aren't truly there, i'd like the admire the beauty found in the way that the instrumentals that are actually there, before i had even known the name to this track i had heard it in a buddy's car, and it struck me as being reminiscent of water, or something that has to do with diving deep into a sort of darkness through light.

which since the album is based on water is a pretty cool thing, it proves that the point of the albums sound construction was well thought out and masterfully sends the message it was intending to send, it's easy to find what we are told to look for (for those who knew it was on the water album before they heard it) but it's even more amazing to be lead to the intent of the song without any prior knowledge of the meaning or theme behind it, showing that in such a dark age of art and music that the past decade has put us through there are still a select few people out there producing something that can be respected and is truly beautiful in a time of drab, boring nothingness and generic emopopunkpostmoderncrap wannabes that populate the general music industry these days.

General Comment:I think the synth part around 3:15 sounds more like breathing than anything else. That, combined with the heartbeat-like bass drum sound at that part, given how quiet that part is, seems like they are trying to just present the sound of the diver floating in the water.

General Comment:Here's an idea--I related this song to the story of when Jesus appears to his disciples walking on the water. They think he's a ghost and then Peter says, "Is that really you?" and then walks out on the water, too. (That's the calm part after the initial storm kicks in.) So he's walking along and then gets spooked by the fact that he's walking on water and there's a tempest all around. So when the heavier distortion returns is when he's looking around and sinking and that continues through the 'underwater' part where Peter is thinking the words that we can't tell what they are. Then Jesus reaches down and pulls him up and walks him back to the boat and calms the storm. It fits pretty well, don't you think? That's my fun interpretation.
