The lesson you'd do well not to forget
Your life could be the one it's wisdom saves
At sea, where you're beleaguered and beset
On every side by strife of wind and waves

Despite the best of maps and the bravest men
For all their mighty names and massive forms
There'll never be and has never been
A ship or fleet secure against the storms

When kings upon the main have clung to pride
And held themselves as masters of the sea
I've held them down beneath the crushing tide
Till they have learned that no one masters me

But grace can still be found within the gale
With fear and reverence, raise your ragged sail

    General Comment:My interpretation:
It is important to learn that no matter how great I think I am, I am mortal and death is unconquerable. However, if there is love and faith, then life is worth living.

    We are beggars all..

General Comment:I just think the sea is metaphorical for nature and God, in the sense that, When we're having trouble in life, (beleaguered and beset by wind and wave)

People have clung to pride and have claimed to have the best ways to live your life, even taking risks (the maps and bravest men)

remember people have tried to master life, the way things are but no one has really ever been secure against the problems life gives us, no matter how many people they have backing them up, a ship or a fleet (against the storms).

When people have tried to say they know the secret to happiness and claim they have the way to be happy, I've held them down and made them realize there's no happiness without God in your life. (no one masters me)

But grace can still be found within the gale(You can be forgiven for the trials and failures of life), with fear and reverence(of God), raise your ragged sail(live your life for him).

God loves Thrice, because these lyrics are like crack to my ears.

General Comment:The four elements, refers to astrological signs; everyone has a different element depending on your date of birth. Understanding each sign and the specific direction its heading toward is the key to understand these songs especially the last sonnets. This song deals with the greatest challenge facing the water sign; that of arrogance, pride, spitefulness. Water signs have trouble not changing; like waves and water always flowing. The sea is just a metaphor for sensitivity and ones relation to the outside world. Water is sensitive, always flowing, it's hard to stay on track, even with the best of maps, because regardless of your plans, something always comes up; you have trouble sticking to it. Often the only to get something done is through pride. The purpose for water signs: overcome pride. Each sign has it's own moral.

General Comment:I understand where some people are coming from, not seeing the religious aspects, because I don't really see things that way either. However, I've mentioned before that I believe the arts to be open to any interpretation. As Dustin said, these sonnets were written to be about nature and the elements, but as someone else said (I can't remember who, and I don't really feel like searching), to ignore the Christian aspect of Dustin's songwriting would be foolish.

I'm glad that you mentioned the meaning of "the main", Mortisfacio, because I would have had you not. :)

That said, I do believe this song to be much more about the sea than about God. Though I do see why one could argue that it is about God, the most important thing I pick out is nature's insistence that man cannot, and will not, ever truly overcome it. Water, in general, is an interesting thing to symbolize, given that there are so many different aspects one could mention. In some works, water is generally depicted as peaceful and loving; indeed, astrologically, people of the element water tend to be the most emotional and the most caring. However, water is also depicted as being terrible and unforgiving (which also corresponds to the negative aspect of water people- though they tend to be slow to anger, their fury is frightening when it comes). I think it's very interesting how Dustin chose to characterize each of the elements used here- fire is warning, water unforgiving, air hurt, and earth is rather melancholy. And all of them have more or less the same thing to say: mankind should not try to control nature; when they do, everything goes wrong, and they only end up destroying nature (and usually themselves).

I like that the melodies of all four are more or less the same as well- they're simply changed a bit to reflect their particular elements. It's very fitting, as the lyrics tend to do the same thing. That is, though they're very different, they do all seem to make similar points. This is a very effective way of tying this whole project together.

General Comment:DUDE! this song is so empowering when you read the lyrics and pretend you're the sea. pwned. I do see how people can see a connection to god but I think it was mainly intended to be about the sea.

General Comment:my personal favorite of the four sonnets.. i love how it deals with man's pride and arrogance as well as its "supposed mastery" of an untameable element. i hate to bring religion into this but.. Water is gods tool to shape the earth, we realize this by the example of the Great Flood with Noah and all that stuff. Could dustin be alluding to the fact that the reason boats and fleets are sunk is that God is reminding us that he 1. has almighty power 2.is untameable? idk haha just something to think about... feel free to critique:)

General Comment:knocloo27 it does mean that, but more literally means "open water". Therefore the title refers to captains or leaders in general that feel they are masters of the sea.

General Comment:This is such a great song, the lyrics and music are very powerful and moving. I think this very much has to do with the 'pride comes before a fall' proverb. I agree with someone above that stated how in Open Water and this song both seem to compare God to the ocean b/c they both can give and take away. Kings of the Main seems to talk about how when man becomes too proud and loses respect for nature (the ocean) or God they will remind him how small he really is and who is really in control. The last two lines of each sonnet are simply brilliant, it seems life is compared to sailing the seas. Although life (or the sea) can beat you down (hence the ragged sail) it is never too late to find grace (I believe he means the grace of God) so one should not give up and go forward with newfound respect. Like Vheissu this album is chock full of references to God although I agree with some of the interpretations of the fire songs how they could represent wanting to tear down and rebuild this country. I love how he draws from so many sources, I think the verdict is in that Dustin is the greatest lyrics writer EVER.
