2080 Lyrics
I can't sleep when I think about the times we're living in
I can't sleep when I think about the future I was born into Outsiders dressed up like Sunday morning With no Berlin wall what the hell you gonna do It's a new year, I'm glad to be here It's a fresh spring, so let's sing In 2080 I'll surely be dead So don't look ahead, ever look ahead It's a new year, I'm glad to be here It's a fresh spring, so let's sing And the moon shines bright on the water tonight So we won't drown in the summer sound If you find me I'll be sitting by the water fountain Picket signs, letdowns, meltdown on Monday morning But it's alright, it's alright, it's alright, it's alright It's alright Cause in no time, they'll be gone, I guess I'll still be standing here It's a new year, I'm glad to be here It's a fresh spring, so let's sing In 2080 I'll surely be dead So don't look ahead, ever look ahead It's a new year, I'm glad to be here It's a fresh spring, so let's sing And the moon shines bright on the water tonight So we won't drown in the summer sound Yeah, yeah, we can all grab at the chance to be handsome farmers Yeah you can have twenty-one sons and be blood when they marry my daughters And the pain that we left at the station will stay in a jar behind us We can pickle the pain into blue ribbon winners at county contests It's a new year, I'm glad to be here It's a fresh spring, so let's sing In 2080 I'll surely be dead So don't look ahead, ever look ahead It's a new year, I'm glad to be here It's a fresh spring, so let's sing And the moon shines bright on the water tonight So we won't drown in the summer sound Yeah, yeah, we can all grab at the chance to be handsome farmers Yeah you can have twenty-one sons and be blood when they marry my daughters And the pain that we left at the station will stay in a jar behind us We can pickle the pain into blue ribbon winners at county contests |

Why is everyone accusing Yeasayer of promoting some sort of short-sighted, commune-based lifestyle? The rural imagery doesn't have to be literal... I see it as symbolic for a return to a more simple lifestyle where we live just for the sake of living (appreciating life as agrarian people had to do because they had to struggle just to live, as liacasino pointed out) and appreciating little, local things like family (and twenty-one sons, blue ribbon winners, the moon on the water) instead of stressing all the time about being the best and making our children the best and succeeding in some capitalist rat race. Think summer vacations spent at relatives' houses as an ideal... K-OS's "Sunday Morning" sets up a similar symbolism in contrasting "Saturday night" (as our modern escapist chaotic dramatic judgmental, probably alcohol-soaked idea of happiness) with "Sunday morning" as a more simple, innocent happiness. Yeasayer even uses Sunday here as one of their rural symbols. This doesn't mean abandoning our current responsibilities, since even farmers have immediate responsibilities. It's just a commentary on our state of mind, on how despite all our modern confusion and anxiety (hence the melancholic tone), we can in the face of this find happiness by appreciating what we have around us right now, instead of regretting what we had or worrying about what we will have.
sorry for the rambling and for injecting some of my own imagery. this kinda hits close to home for me since i tend to be a pretty anxious person =)
ripelivejam- children don't have to just represent the future. they can also represent happiness, especially since these ones are singing!

Maybe it's tongue in cheek, but maybe there is something about this new year that he is glad to be here about... Damn, he is at least happy to leave his pain behind...
