i think this song can also describe depression in a way the wolves being thoughts or experience or stresses that crowd the mind. Maybe like existentialist issues or troubles with the philosophies of life, death and love. Kind of like addressing the issues and when things scare you when youre younger you call out to your mum. I spose growing up and having to deal with these things,and how negative thoughts just multiply and take over and you cant escape. these thoughts are beautiful and strange and ultimately glorious but at the same time can be devastating holes to fall into. i kind of interpret 'the house' as his mind, nightmares and such.

I've interpreted the wolves to be thoughts stuck in the narrator's head, fermenting while he dreams at night. They are challenging him, 'tearing up holes in the house', forcing him to open his eyes. They are conflicting and radical, but at the same time the narrator recognizes they are ultimately wise, strong and ubiquitous; beautiful.

By wolves, does he mean strangers? Darn it, I really want to know.

I really like when he says, "mama there's wolves in the house." My favorite line, actually.

He's referring to nightmares in my opinion.

Ever heard of the expression, 'wolves at your door'? Well, it's kinda like saying something's brewing, or in the works of going wrong. In this case, something to bring up nightmares.

Well, in this song, now they're 'in the house'.

Mama is also something he's using in a child-like perspective. Cause when you're a child and you wake up from a bad dream, you call to your mom. :)

'mama they won't let me out mama they're mating at night mama they wont make nice'

Obviously, he can't escape them. By 'mating' he simply means that they're growing either more 'vividly' or even in numbers. And they won't make nice, as in he just can't figure out how to get rid of his nightmares.

He also describes them as tearing up the house and running around.

Perhaps he means that these problems, these nightmares, are just destroying everything, changing his perspective and eating away at his mind. He just can't relax with them around anymore.

And again, he refers to his 'mama'.

He's looking at his mother in a child perspective again, where he thinks her too wise, and strong to be buffeted by these horrible nightmares, that she won't try to make amends with these nightmares or stand for it at all.

Personally I think the song is about addiction. Wolves in the house equalling addiction, mating at night meaning it's getting worse. The wolves are beautiful when on substance and destroying the house when the withdrawal kicks in. The last lines, "Mama I tried to put them out" = I tried to stop "Mama I know you're too wise, to wait till those wolves make nice" = you know I need help and I can't do it myself, you're the only one that knows me well enough to help, etc.

Of course it can be interpreted many different ways, it could be about being mentally unstable, it could be a bad dream as others have said, it could be about a relationship going south and the beauty of the past (wolves beautiful on the hilltop, far away, but in the house they're tearing it apart).

It's a beautiful, sad song though, whatever the meaning.

Yeah I agree with everyone pretty much, I think it's about something tearing up at his mind, stuck in his head, a nightmare, maybe an addiction. Just something that wont leave him alone, being called "wolves" i love when he sings the "they tumble and fight and they're beautiful on the hilltops at night they are beautiful" part. the way he sings beautiful!

The song is a powerful and beautiful song about INNER DEMONS, seems to be a losing fight and either represents an actual literal falling out with his mother, or at least a spiritual/character falling out with such values. That's my take on it.

Personally I interpreted the wolves as feelings for something or someone, maybe a person or an event that keeps replaying in his head or something he doesnt know what to think about. But he cant keep them out of his head. Possibly guilt or regret for something? Anyway, this is an amazing song. His voice completes the song.
