You've got the best of both worlds
You're the kind of girl who can take down a man,
And lift him back up again
You are strong but you're needy,
Humble but you're greedy
Based on your body language,
your shouted cursive I've been reading
You're style is quite selective,
though your mind is rather reckless
Well I guess it just suggests
that this is just what happiness is

[Chorus]
Hey, what a beautiful mess this is
It's like picking up trash in dresses

Well it kind of hurts when the kind of words you write
Kind of turn themselves into knives
And don't mind my nerve you can call it fiction
Cause I like being submerged in your contradictions dear
Cause here we are, here we are

Although you were biased I love your advice
Your comebacks they're quick
And probably have to do with your insecurities
There's no shame in being crazy,
Depending on how you take these
Words that paraphrasing this relationship we're staging

[Chorus]
And it's a beautiful mess, yes it is
It's like, we are picking up trash in dresses

Well it kind of hurts when the kind of words you say
Kind of turn themselves into blades
And the kind and courteous is a life I've heard
But it's nice to say that we played in the dirt
Cause here, here we are, Here we are

[x7]
Here we are

We're still here

[Chorus]
And what a beautiful mess this is
It's like taking a guess when the only answer is yes

And through timeless words in priceless pictures
We'll fly like birds not of this earth
And tides they turn and hearts disfigure
But that's no concern when we're wounded together
And we tore our dresses and stained our shirts
But it's nice today, oh the wait was so worth it

a song about an internet/long distance relationhip that ended up in real life

he's singing about when the girl starts a fight with him (take down a man)
taking things solely on her views/feelings (biased)
and while (the guy) trying to talk things out, she storms up (comebacks r quick, due to insecurities)
--->>insecurities, that is, she doesn't feel that guy loves her back in same way she does, and maybe because of the type of relationship they're in ---internet/long distance (this relationship we're staging)
now he startin to think she's bein crazy while taking things in wrong way (there's no shame in bein crazy part)
she gets mad, probably saying stuff that hurt (words turn into blades/knives)
after that, (the guy) let's her be,observing her/analyzing her why she bein like how she is(ur strong but ur needy part) understands how she is.
So inspite of her being a "mess" he still finds beauty in her and the relationship they are in bcoz she makes him happy (it suggests that this is just wat happiness is)
now the guy is tellin her that he loves her and that she doesnt have to think otherwise (it's like taking a guess when the only answer is yes)
telling her they been through a lot,good/bad and it's ok coz they goin to pass it (timeless words, priceless pictures, fly like birds...tides turn, hearts disfigured)
he saying it will be fine, she's not the only one who's hurt with the internet/long distance relationship they are in (there's no concern coz we'r wounded together)

the (u can take down a man and pick him back up again) means, she could hurt him but she the only one who could make him feel better

despite the fights over the net, with patience, they ended up with a real relationship (all the wait, was so worth)

that how i see it. nice song. i like the lines "here we are, we're still here" on the background

General Comment:Oh yeah and this is one of my favorite songs of all time.

For me the song talks about how the singer's relationship is lovely but there are many consequences or problems associated with having this relationship. Hence referring it to a "beautiful mess"- something that is great and beautiful but is disturbed by other factors. A great simple example is Romeo and Juliet, how they both love each other so much yet everything and almost everyone tries to separate them. There are in a mess, but it's so beautiful because they get to have each other and be with their true love.

Another similar take I have of this song is that the relationship has both ups and downs, or more specifically, the girl has her ups and downs, hence the line "you are the best of both worlds". But the sweetest and most moving message of this song is no matter what is ruining their relationship, or what the downsides are, the singer still loves her and finds that he can accept the flaws- whatever they may be.

"Tides may turn, and hearts disfigured, but thats no concern, when we're wounded together"
is a great line near the end, showing what matters is that they're together, but not just together but wounded together. It's not all positive, but that's all he they need even if tides turn and hearts get broken, which the former part of the quote is suggesting.
Then it ends with "we tore our dresses, stained our shirts, but it's nice today, and oh the wait was so worth it". That just says it all. They've fought, been through so much, but the singer has enjoyed the day- and in the end, that is the fact that he cares about. On top of that, he has no regrets waiting for this relationship, be it riddled with messes or not, as it's still all together beautiful.

General Comment:Also it should be "shoddy cursive I've been reading", not "shotty". Shotty can only been a type of shotgun, there are no other definitions anywhere, i've searched and searched (dictionaries and on the net). However shoddy sounds the same and overall means "cheap" or "deceptive". Since the previous line states the girl's good aspects and bad aspects- "strong but you're needy, humbly but you're greedy"- the word "shoddy" then fits. Because the singer is saying he sees these good and bad qualities not only from her body language but also her deceptive cursive writing. Pretty deep stuff.

Jason Mraz rules btw. He is the best song writer ever.

General Comment:from JASON MRAZ – A BEAUTIFUL MESS
Submitted by bbamsey on October 19, 2009 from artworksmagazine.com/2009/10/jason-mraz-a-beautiful-mess/

"While that relationship will likely sizzle in his memory forever, he has hope that one woman’s hand will fit his just right someday. “A Beautiful Mess” was written in her honor. It is a brilliantly crafted song full of patience and love’s contradictions – a perfect first dance. If Mozart had strung words together instead of notes, he would have created this masterpiece. “Even after we find our soul mate or our life partner,” Mraz says, “there’s still going to be a give and take, and we should celebrate the light and the dark. ‘A Beautiful Mess’ is there to acknowledge that there’s going to be some ugliness, but there’s going to be a whole lot of beauty. Getting married is going to be a beautiful mess. We’re going to make kids and we’re going to have a hell of a time raising them in this crazy world, but we’re going to do it. One of us is going to die before the other, and it’s going to be horrible, but we’re going to be there for each other. I think that’s a really powerful thing to think about when you get married – to really acknowledge that I’m willing to love you entirely.” It’s a song that doesn’t have to end if you don’t want it to."

General Comment:This is without a doubt one of the best songs ever. I love that Jason's words of his songs have so much meaning....and it is always amazing lyrics.

To me this song reflects the relationship I had with my X. Absolute pain that I guy can go through when a relationship goes bad, especially if the relationship was like a "fatal attraction". You both really loved the each other, but the relationship just seemed to go south anyway no matter what you did to try to keep it from sinking.

The man is so in love with her and that is why she can take him down and lift him back up again. a man that opens his heart to someone like that(because he loves her), enables her to do just that to him. (i believe every woman has that ability if someone love you that much). Her character is exciting. Very elegant yet also rough around the edges...all that is ok when things are going well in a relationship with mutual respect. When trouble starts, those character traits has the ability to hurt...probably because she is hurt as well and acts in defense when the irrational behavior enters the relationship. For people that love each other, words can cut like knives, because both know what will hurt each other. The sad thing is, anger or hurt can cause these words to be expressed.....and contributes later on to the destruction of a relationship.....if both are not strong enough to overcome the issue and bring back rationality and respect for each other. In this song, her words cut first…

Without a doubt, my relationship with this woman was well worth it and I am blessed sharing the most beautiful time in my life with her. Sadly today, we are still not talking to each other, but I am hopeful for "... But that's no concern when we're wounded together And we tore our dresses and stained our shirts But its nice today, oh the wait was so worth it"

We both had words that cut like knives. To me this song reflects a bad breakup between two people that truly loved each other and one day overcame the pain of the bad breakup....a bad breakup causes a person to see the craziness in the other but the gift of love and time leads to forgiveness....all worth it......and a blessed life enriching experience.

General Comment:Jason Mraz said in a Blog

A Beautiful Mess- How someone’s mess is as important to admire as their beauty. Therefore, see that they have the best in both worlds.

    Gosh he is wonderful.

General Comment:Think of it in terms of two people who haven't ever been together because of other relationships they've had, but the whole time they've written and spoken, knives and blades, like hints that they each wanted to be with the other person the whole time. Giving "biased advice" to one another about what to do in their other relationships, and even though it might "sound crazy" they've always wanted to break out of the friendship "relationship they're staging" and finally getting together should feel risky like any relationship does at first but for them they've wanted it so long that instead of "guessing the only answer is yes." could just be me but after reading some of the other interpretations of the song it made sense to me.

    Thoughts?

General Comment:I love this song....to me, this song is about what love actually entails. Love isn't this fairytale concept where things are always perfect with flowers and butterflies....Love is hard and it requires that you put up with a lot of crap with one another. I love the last lines though...the realization that all of the hard stuff is worth it and it will all work out, as long as they are "wounded together"...."oh the wait was so worth it"
