Goddamn this dusty room
This hazy afternoon
I'm breathing in this silence
Like never before

This feeling that I get
This one last cigarette
As I lay awake
And wait for you to come through the door

Oh maybe maybe maybe
I can share it with you
I behave I behave I behave
So I can share it with you

You were not alone
Dear loneliness
You forgot
But I remember this
Oh stranger stranger
Stranger things have happened, I know

I am not alone
Dear loneliness
I forgot
That I remember this
Oh stranger stranger
Stranger things have happened, I know
Oh, oh
Oh, oh

We'll dream about somewhere
Our smoke will fill the air
As I lay awake and wait
For you to walk out that door
I can change I can change I can change
But who do you want me to be
I'm the same I'm the same I'm the same
Oh do you want me to be

You were not alone
Dear loneliness
You forgot
But I remember this
Oh stranger stranger
Stranger things have happened, I know
Oh, oh
Oh, oh

I'm not alone
Dear loneliness
I forgot
That I remember this
You were not alone
Dear loneliness
You forgot
But I remember this
Oh stranger stranger
Stranger things have happened, I know

I'm not alone
Dear loneliness
I forgot
That I remember this
Oh stranger stranger
Stranger things have happened, I know
Oh, oh
Oh, oh

General Comment:i took this song a little different, it seems. i interpereted is as 'Lonliness' and 'Stranger' being the noun. and one and the same. if read like this:

You are not alone, Dear loneliness.
You forgot But I remember this
    Oh stranger stranger
Stranger, things have happened, I know.

so, i think that this song is an internal struggle. just the anticipation for that gust of overwhelming 'Lonliness' to enter. then, in the same respect, 'lonliness' to leave.

Song Meaning:"This feeling that I get
    This one last cigarette
As I lay awake and wait for you to come through that door
Oh maybe, maybe, maybe I can share it with you"

Anyone else think that maybe he'd like to share it with his late band mate?

General Comment:Fantastic song, the first second i heard this song i couldn't stop listening to it. I think it's about wanting
someone you can't have. You can try to change your personallity but it won't have any effect.
In the end, there's just the lonelyness

My Interpretation:This song can be based on a relationship. I do agree with alot of the interpretations posted. I did not see any about depression. It has been documented that David went through a sever depression after the death of Kurt. If anyone has had depression they may remember the feelings interpreted in the first few lines.

    Goddamn this dusty room
This hazy afternoon.... Many people suffering depression feel as if life is one big haze.
    I'm breathing in this silence
    Like never before

This feeling that I get... the feeling of depression
    This one last cigarette

    As I lay awake
And wait for you to come through the door...... maybe you is not a girl but kurt.

    Oh, Maybe, Maybe, Maybe
I can share it with you
I behave, I behave, I behave...... Maybe he feels If you behave in this life you go to heaven
So I can share it with you... He misses his friend and wants to share time with him again

    Chours.

You were not alone dear loneliness.
You forgot but I remember this....... David is reflecting on his last depression. He remembers the feelings and how he is being sucked back into that depression. He also knows he can recognize it before it happens. "You forgot" means the depression is trying to come back but it doesnt realize he remembers so it wont work.

    Oh Stranger, Stranger, Stranger
Stranger things have happened I know..... This is doubt seting in. That little bit of doubt that dave feels. He feels like he might not be strong enough to stop the depression.

    Later in the song.

I can change I can change I can change
But who do you want me to be
I'm the same I'm the same I'm the same
What do you want me to be

Dave feels as if he needs to be someone to go to heaven. But he doesnt know who or how he is going to do it. He is lost. A lot of times when humans are lost they sink into depression.

I understand there are a million different interpretations. This is just what I feel when I listen to the song. Thanks

General Comment:My real father left when i was about 5 or 6 and my mother hates him. The 1st stanza reminds me of the appartment me and my mom lived, where my dad left my mom. The 2nd stanza is when memories of my father leaving started kicking in and i realized how much i wanted him. The 3rd stanza is really how much i wanted to get to sit down after a decade and get to know and meet my dad. And the chorus "You were not alone dear loneliness...Oh,Oh." is when i tried to convince him that he was never really alone because i had been in this apartment waiting for him forever. "You'll dream about somewhere. Asmoke will fill the air." is my father dreaming about somewhere better he could be instead of with me. "As I lay awake and wait for you to walk out the door." because i knew he always would. "I can change" I blamed his absence on myself. "I can Change" My mom blamed herself for his AWOL attitude, crying for days and days and days on end for something she couldn't prevent. "I can change" I said to myself and wondered why I need to be the one changing.
I watched my mom cry for too long for me to even express and realized why she hates him today and I figured the chorus of this song would be the only thing worth telling him one day.

    "You were not alone
Dear loneliness" he was the only one that was ever good enough for him.

    "You forgot
But I remember this" My mother

    "Oh stranger stranger
Stranger things have happened, I know" He is a complete stranger to me and I know what he has not been around to acknowledge.

    "I'm not alone
Dear loneliness" I always had someone who cared, My mother.

    "I forgot
That I remember this" I forgot why my mom hated him so much. I forgot that she was always there for me. I forgot that he would not change for his own blood...but I remember this.

    "Oh stranger stranger
Stranger things have happened" I know" I would tell the complete stranger and anyone else who is awed at the thought of a "Father/Stranger" who would walk out on his family...Stranger things have Happened.

General Comment:Well, while we are talking about tributes to other songs, I am pretty certain the "I can change, I can change, I can change" part and the lines following it pay homage to Verve's Bittersweet Symphony.
