Lyrics for Come Alive as interpreted by risefromtheashes

Come Alive Lyrics
Seems like only yesterday
Life belonged to runaways
Nothing here to see
No looking back
Every song monotone
Every color monochrome
Light began to fade
Into the black

Such a simple animal
Sterilized with alcohol
I could hardly
Feel me anymore

Desperate and meaningless
All filled up with emptiness
Felt like everything
Was said and done

I lay there in the dark
And I close my eyes
You saved me the day
You came alive

Still I tried to find my way
Spinning now was end of days
Burning like a flame
Behind my eyes

Drowning it out
Drinking it in
Crown the king of suffering
Prisoner, slave to the disguise

Disappear the only thing
Bittersweet surrendering
Knew that it was time
To say goodbye

I lay there in the dark
And I close my eyes
You saved me the day
You came alive
No reason left
Me to survive
You saved me
The day you came alive

Come alive
Come alive
Come alive
Come alive
Come alive
Come alive
Come alive
Come alive

Come alive
Come alive
Come alive
Come alive
(Come alive)
(Come alive)
(Come alive)
(Come alive)

I lay there in the dark
And I close my eyes
You saved me the day
You came alive

Come alive
Come alive
Come alive
Come alive
Come alive
Come alive
Come alive
Come alive
Come alive
Come alive
Come alive
Come alive
Come alive
Come alive
Come alive

Nothing wrong to give
I can finally live
Come alive
You're laughing at me
I can finally breathe
Come alive

Lay me down in the dark
Open my eyes
You saved me
The day you came alive

Come alive
Come alive
Come alive
Come alive
Come alive
Come alive
Come alive
Come alive
Come alive
Come alive
Come alive

One of the best on the album! Excellent built up. Reminds me of old style grundge but not so 90s. Another classic!

Also:

"Lay me down in the dark
Open my eyes"

Should be

"I lay there in the dark
Open my eyes"

Like the buildup....though I could've used more flat-out rockers on this album.

I agree that it's about having children. It seems that way, anyway. "You save me the day you came alive" just sounds like the birth of a child.

I don't think it's about the joys of having a child but I can see how it relates to the song itself. To me, I think it's about someone look back on his or her life and realising how much they've wasted and that they haven't lived their life at all. The first stanza is filled with powerful sensory imagery and each line ...with "mono", no looking back, it's like they were restricted and limited by only one choice in their life, they weren't getting anywhere. All their decisions and actions led them to the same destination at the end of their journey. "Monochrome" suggesting how black and white their world was and "monotone" suggesting lack of emotion hence emphasising a lack of life. They felt like they had nothing to live for and they took to drinking booze. Then they consumed themselves with despair when "I lay there in the dark and I close my eyes". Then someone or something that was probably in the same situation as him in the dark like himself probably showed them that their life wasn't just black and white and didn't lack of colour, and it allowed them to 'come alive'. This gave them inspiration to change themselves and they too began to ‘come alive’ as well and thus they began to feel compared to when "I could hardly feel me anymore", they weren't in touch with their senses. Senses that made them alive. I dunno, but that's how I interpret it unless someone can convince me otherwise or tell me word for word what Grohl meant when he wrote this song.

i believe this song is very dead on Dave's life. i mean, wasn't he an alcoholic? i think it's about what kind of monster he was and all this stuff that happened to him, all these things that were him.
something changed him. whether it have been a child, a lady friend, or maybe even more spiritual like God.

it actually makes me have all the best hope for him.

.. i agree about it being about having a kid
'you saved me the day you came alive'
-- plus, wasn't his daughter Violet born last year?
.. yeah, i just think it's got something to do with her.

I think there are many themes for this song. One is that Grohl has a child and that he now has a bigger purpose then just making music. Second is that Grohl is describing Nirvana. When Nirvana eneded, he relied on Foo Fighters to keep playing music. He wanted to control of his music. He didn't want to be a slave to just the grunge sound and record company. Third is about how people live boring lives and then they have a near death experience of someone close.

This very much so describes Grohl's life. From the "Life to belonged to runaways" (seeing as Grohl left home, never went back...then joined Nirvana) And how he was succumbing to alcoholism and sorrow for the loss of his friend Kurt (Fading into the black...) and he had nothing to live for...all that is pretty self explanatory.

It could be reffing to either his wife, or his daughter...or him just realizing he has a lot to live for.

Simply a persons awaking to the self, and denying that nay' sayer in us all, the day you "came alive" infers something that was already "there", not born, (children, something new) but an awakening of the part that makes one complete. Perhaps the thing that takes you from the shadow of yourself or what needs to be, whether you like it or not (no reason left, need to survive) to be to what you need to be.

it might not make sense to some people, but for me this song has a special meaning. I've always thought that you spend most of your life "missing" someone you haven't met already (might be your own child, your partner, etc) and that person is the one that ultimately "saves you". you go through life, with it's ups and downs (sometimes mostly downs) and even in the "ups" you feel as if you are missing that "someone". He almost begs her/him to "come alive", that person he has always missed and knows he needs in order to be saved, but who isn't quite there already.
at least that's what it means to me, 'cause i can relate to that

hah.. These lyrics almost sound Christian. Song about a figure akin to a Christ or Savior?
But other songs in the album may contradict this theory..

"Crown the king of suffering"

"Open my eyes"

"You saved me
The day you came alive"

"Nothing wrong to give
I can finally live"

I love this song. Sad yet beautiful, like tears, especially the beggining. I don't think it's aboot a god, because I don't think Grohl's a christian (nothing mentioned of it on Wikipedia, and they would if he was); could be wrong, but I don't he is. It reminds me of family counseling, since I'd listen to this on the rides home when I first started going, and it'd comfort me when I felt pretty upset aboot the counceling. Dave Grohl said how he wrote this album for his daughter on the Grammys, I think it is aboot Violet. It also sounds like it could be aboot someone who is going through difficult times "come alive," and their loved ones are watching, worried aboot that person. Then in the end, the person pulls through "You saved me the day you came alive". Don't think it's the theme, though, just saying. Yeah, a lot of people say the lyrics are aboot Kurt Cobain. And while they were friends and band mates, Dave has said that he doesn't like to bring up Nirvana, since it's like opening a box of old pictures. Beno_275, what do you mean by "Not saying im Atheist or any of the crap"? I'm an atheist, but you don't have to be one to see that FF isn't comtemporary christian....

i could be wrong but, he could be talking about Jesus. or well not directly but maybe this song has a more spiritual meaning rather than physical or human. i mean thats how i interprett the song.

I think it is about being in a creative rut (which to a full time songwriter/musician sucks)...see lyric "felt like everything was said and done"...and then something came along...a new muse (could be a child) and sparked the creativity back again...getting brought out of the rut of day to day life.

Wow, this song pretty much just blew me away the first time I heard it. I was really confused about what it meant though, and somehow I had convinced myself that it was about God, but I was pleased that that's not the general idea. I like the other ideas about the meaning, and now that I've read the explanations, it makes sense that this song would be about Violet. I think it's kind of a mix though, between talking about his child when she 'came alive' and about Grohl and how he was helped to 'come alive'. Really great song.
