Lyrics for Carry You Home as interpreted by gporter419

Carry You Home Lyrics
Trouble is her only friend and he's back again
Makes her body older than it really is
And she says it's high time she went away
No one's got much to say in this town
Trouble is the only way is down.
Down, down

As strong as you were, tender you go
I'm watching you breathing for the last time
A song for your heart, but when it is quiet
I know what it means and I'll carry you home,
I'll carry you home.

If she had wings she would fly away
And another day God will give her some
Trouble is the only way is down.
Down, down.

As strong as you were, tender you go
I'm watching you breathing, for the last time
A song for your heart, but when it is quiet.
I know what it means and I'll carry you home.
I'll carry you home.

And they were all born pretty in New York City tonight
And someone's little girl was taken from the world tonight.
Under the Stars and Stripes

As strong as you were, tender you go
I'm watching you breathing for the last time
A song for your heart, but when it is quiet.
I know what it means and I'll carry you home.
I'll carry you home. (X2)

This is becoming my fav song on All The Lost Souls. Another song about a girl and her troubles but thankfully I don't think it's too similar to his other tracks. I think the best written part is the bit about New York.

I think some of the lyrics are a little off, but I'm not sure. i.e. I think it's "And they're all so pretty in NYC tonight...taken from the world tonight"...although actually I like "to light" better.

Absolutely brilliant track, definitely one of the best. Slight error in the lyrics, to me it sounds like..."Trouble is the only way, it's down, down, down". Also, "And they're all those pretty New York City lights.

It's about a girl who has been battling with depression, loneliness and sorrow for many years and has decided that now, it's finally time to go. She would fly away if she could, but she can't so the only option is down--down in the ground. The chorus is basically saying that she was strong in life for holding on so long, but tonight she's going to slip away in to a place where she can find peace.
"They're all born pretty in New York City tonight
And someone's little girl was taken from the world tonight
Under the stars and stripes" is the most powerful passage in these lyrics to me and they mean that while all those cold beautiful people who never cared about her are going on with their fabulous lives, someone's daughter lost her own.

This song is extremely powerful to me. I used to dream of flying away and being free of this life so I can easily relate to this song. Fortunately, I found a way that didn't lead all the way down and was able to get up and walk among the pretty people.

It's about a girl with a drug problem. Probly Heroin or Meth. Trouble is the addiction we all thought she got over but it's back again and making her body older than it really is like drugs tend to do. To truly overcome a serious addiction you have to hit rock bottom. Hence the only way out is down. She's the little girl that was taken from the world because she overdosed and James Carried Her home.

I think he is talking about a girl who went to war and was killed. She was very strong to fight for her country but now as she dies she goes tenderly and James is going to carry her home. She dies "Under the Stars and Stripes" in other words she was an american. THe song is also saying that she is going to heaven and she will be an angel.

All of these interpretations are plausible, but I especially like donm2301's. Definitely a possibility seeing as James served in the British army in Kosovo and saw his fair share of those kinds of situations. Not saying it's right and the others are wrong, just adding that little fact in there.

I think this is a war song about those being killed 'under the stars and stripes' while people in the US are oblivious to it.

The song is about a girl who got a disease or wound or whatever that lasts forever. She has been strong for her whole life, but the disease has become too violent and she can't stand it anymore, thus she is going to die. No body cares about the girl except James...

I have another interpretation. This song can actually tells about a girl who came to the States for something, let's say to find a job. But it could possibly because she was forced to. After she arrived here, what she's got is only trouble. For some unclear reason, this girl is going to die, and James promises her to bring her back to her country.

The little girl taken from the world tonight line for some mis-fact-uated reasons strikes me as being about Maddie McCann http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Madeleine_McCann who has parents from the UK - same as Sir James Blount. I don't know: it's just a strong gut feeling as it's always on the news & I was just doing some loose word association...

BTW this song is going to be the third single, after Same Mistake & 1973. Personally I would have chosen Shine On, I'll Take Everything or Give Me Some Love :(

I recommend everyone download the YouTube live version 'Control Room' edition, it really makes you appreciate the song to unprecedented levels, cos the studio version is a bit stale & lifeless, BUT once you hear the live version, the album version falls into place. I gotta a feeling this song is gonna be a hit on par with Goodbye My Lover...

We suspect that my brother-in-law in abusing my sister. Trouble would be him. And when I hear this song, I can't help but tear up because even though she now lives out of state, I would drive all night to bring her back home and out of her situation.

I'm surprised at how long it took for someone to bring up the idea of sickness. The "watching you breathing for the last time" line made me think that's what he's talking about. Anyway, good song, I like it despite not liking James Blunt.

The first time I heard the song it made me think of a young girl dying from cancer. Maybe she's here in the US for treatment but now they'll be taking her back home to the UK.

i definitely think this song is about watching a loved one fight cancer. i have battled it myself, and i could really feel this song. quite intense.
"trouble is her only friend and he's back again" - trouble may be cancer, which often comes back to get you. "makes her body feel older than it is." cancer makes you feel so worn out and just dead. "trouble is the only way down"...cancer can come quick, and gets worse and worse, sometimes its too late, like i think with the girl in the song.

"as strong as you were, tender you go"- cancer survivors are strong people, its hard battle to fight, but she lost this one. hes watching her dying, breathing for the last time...a song for her heart. but when its quiet (stops breathing) ill carry you home...if she had wings, she would fly away from this mess, but in another life...god will give her some. this song is so touching. i really dont see any other way to interpret this song other than he is watching her die of a serious illness.

"And they were all born pretty in New York City tonight
And someone's little girl was taken from the world tonight."
this part made me think it sounds as if the song is about an infant...all these newborns being brought to life, but she is dying. may be an older woman also, but this is just my take on the song. beautiful

(Note - It's a bit lengthy, so I apologize. Just wanted to be thorough.)

Using the music video as a source of my interpretation, I think it's about a solider (James Blunt) who tracks and meets the fallen soldier's significant other.

The chorus refers to Blunt witnessing the death of the fallen solider. Even though the dying solider was strong, he died anyways but died a tender death, and Blunt witnesses his last breath. "A song for your heart" is a reference to two things: the fallen soldier's soul and the message to his significant other. So "when it is quiet," it means that the soldier has passed away, and Blunt knows "what it means"; he'll take his message, which now symbolizes the fallen soldier, and he'll "carry him home," to the significant other.

The first stanza ("Trouble is her only friend...") is probably reference to the loneliness and depression the significant other must endure for the fallen soldier's return. The "trouble" is probably the loneliness and depression, and it returned again and "makes her body older than it really is." She wants to runaway from the trouble and the town she's living in. It's probably assumed the war is a sour topic in the town she's living in. ("No one's got much to say in this town") However, her running away from the trouble doesn't help but instead makes it worse. ("Trouble is the only way is down")

The second stanza ("If she had wings...") goes further on about the running away. She would fly away from all her problems, and one day, God will let her. But until that time, running away right now only makes it worse, as previously stated.

The last stanza ("And they were all born...") was a bit tricky to understand. I think, in a bigger-picture, philosophical sense, "And they were born pretty..." would mean that babies (new life) are being born, while "And someone's little girl..." means that people are dying. Those two lines could allude to the fact that the world moves on with or without the significant other. As to the "Under the Stars and Stripes," I think it simply represents the U.S. So basically, to sum it all up, while life is coming alive, growing, and dying all over the U.S, life is still moving on, regardless.

I've only had the pleasure of hearing those songs of his that have music videos, along with a couple others like "Cry" which are on youtube.

I always enjoy analyzing the songs of James Blunt, so I was happy to see a new video up.

It might just be because I haven't sufficiently solved it yet, but this one seems more preplexing than the rest.

One key thing we must determine is whether "you" and "she" are the same person, and if not, then what is their relationship?

I could definitely be a military-related thing, but since this is his second album, I would imagine he wrote this song after he finished his first album. By this point, he was no longer in the military, but this song seems like something he would create for a situation he and/or someone else is currently in.

I don't think this relates to physical disease, aside from possibly drugs (if they count). If the song is about drugs, I'm sure there is also at least one second intended meaning.

James's songs often have many meanings, and I'm sure he makes them with that in mind, but usually there will be one or two ways in which everything weaves together perfectly.

I wish I knew James so I could "check my work" on analyzing the songs. ;)

Amusing rorschach test. Video (and "Stars and Stripes" reference) kind of blows away cancer or any other connection that doesn't involve a soldier. Base on lyrics alone I originally thought the song was about burying a woman soldier. With the video, it seems rather obvious to me that it's about a woman whose husband/boyfriend was killed in war fighting for or allied with the USA. Probably from the viewpoint of a fellow soldier who was a buddy who knew the woman. Those are the white cliffs of Dover in the video, correct? How about a British citizen married/romantically involved with a US soldier who was killed? Perhaps meant to refer to the "special relationship" between the two countries. Personally, I'm not too crazy about lyrics that imply conflicting meanings or high-pitched male singing, but the video gave the song a much bigger impact to me. Very touching.
