[chant]

praise god who have many names
but the devil have many more
with the love that my mother gave me
i'm gonna drop the devil to the floor
i'm gonna drop the devil to his knees
drop the devil to his knees

hide when there's someone
that try to convince you
that they have the answer
no matter the question
be wary of those that believe
in a neat little world
'cause it's just fucking crazy
you know that it is

[chant]

walking along in the haze of confusion
sometimes i can laugh
but sometimes it takes all of my strength
just to find enough reason
to take the next step
step but i will
but i will till i do

[chant]
somebody gonna save the world
somebody gonna save the world

brother sister
brother sister
brother sister
brother sister
praise god for he has many names
but the devil have many more
and with the love that my mother gave me
i'm gonna drop the devil to the floor
i'm gonna drop the devil to his knees
i'm gonna drop the devil to his knees

strange evolution
how people have come to believe
that we are its greatest achievement
when really we're just a collection of cells
overrating themselves
hello god i'm avoiding the truth

[chant]
somebody gonna save the world

drop the devil to his knees
drop the devil to his knees

My Interpretation:Knowing we're going to die makes us feel powerless, so we have delusions and the need to control and to have power over things, and many have become selfish and brainwashed by certain belief systems... all the differing groups in the world need to realize that we are all basically the same, and if we practice empathy, we can change the world for the better.

General Comment:unless "qweeps" is referring to a live version, the lyric is not "hide when there's someone that try to convince you", it is "the problem is someone will try to convince you".

makes much more sense like that, no? :)

General Comment:I think this song shows the confusion with which Dave is existentially faced with daily (and many of us). Dave has admittedly said that his strength is not coherence, and also that his thoughts are very complex (much like his guitar playing).
A point I would like to make is that if we are to reduce ourselves to "just a collection of cells" with no ultimate meaning to life, than life seems utterly meaningless. He very much associates with the Philosopher Fredrick Nietzsche in that he realizes that if there is no God, than life isn't worth living.

General Comment:songs about how we overate ourselves at humans. people think we are gods greatest achievment and somehow special. dave is saying we are not and that we are just a small fraction of life and really have no special significance at all.

awesome jam. cant wait for dave and crew to put all these newer songs on a cd.

General Comment:I agree with jrm112, well said. This song has a very deep meaning to me. I honestly see it as a song about how evolution and God.

"How people have come to believe,
that we are its greatest achievement
when really we're just a COLLECTION OF CELLS,
    overrating themselves
hello god, IM AVOIDING THE TRUTH.

Hes saying that people are making up excuses and "avoiding the truth" about life. I think he is saying that people are just saying, HELLO GOD, to avoid the truth about life on earth. God and the devil have many names because so many people over thousands of years want something to live for when they die.

I dont know, thats just my opinion.

General Comment:I think this song musically was inspired by the African tribal music, but lyrically, it is a quasi politcal song as well as a protest to our current society. Who can stand these people who "try to convince you that they have the answer no matter the question" From our politicians to Scientologists, all spewing out their garbage about a "neat little world"
Scientologist whom hold themselves up as Gods and every thing they say is truth, sorry folks, but "we're just a collection of cells"

General Comment:he explains that the african tribe was his inspiration for writing the song, but i dont think that necessarily has much to do with its meaning.

General Comment:He explains what it's about in the Live at Radio City DVD. He meant a group in Africa called the Da Quois Sans (sp?) and basically they just blew his mind. His story wne on for about 5-10 minutes. You should listen to it sometime.

General Comment:i think this is actually pretty simple and people are extremely over-analyzing.
this is simply an expression of the everyday struggle people have reasoning with whether to believe in god or evolution. first half of the song-belief of god

"be wary of those that believe
in a neat little world " (be wary of those who believe in evolution)

second half-belief in evolution. but the song leans toward god- explained by the song's repetitive hook-"drop the devil to his knees" and also the last line of the last (evolution) verse, "hello god i'm avoiding the truth", expresses the struggle for how easy it can be to make sense of evolution, yet perceive this logic as a way of denying a maker. much like a pendelum that swings back and forth between being skeptical and faithful. dave's acceptance of evolution is clearly overshadowed by a belief in god by using the songs hook as a defense (to the devil) meaning from a religious point of view that the devil symbolizes the pull he feels when wondering about evolution. not saying dave is a devout christian-the song is meant to express the struggle. remember- dave is an extreme idealist, and wouldn't have a narrow assumption.
