I hid the keys to unlock love's heart
To hold you in my sweetest pain and suffering
Everything's unfair in our lust and war
Redemption beyond right and wrong

In our hearts love keeps sweet-talking to despair
And goes on sleepwalking past hope
All is lost in this war
And all we can do is to wail and weep to the saddest song
Sleepwalking past hope

I unlit the light to embrace the dark
To be near but not to turn into you my darling
Forever we're lost in our souls' storm
Reflections of each other's faults

I gave up long ago
Painting love with crimson flow
Ran out of blood and hope
So I paint you no more

My hell begins from the 10th and descends to the circle
Six hundred threescore and six
And from there I crawl beneath Lucifer's claws just for one last kiss

General Comment:HIM doesn't stand for his internal majesty, its his infernal majesty. and how do you know if they're satanic, have you personally asked each member of the band about their religious views?

General Comment:I agree with all of the above interpretations of this fabulous song, except for the following lines:

    "I gave up long ago
    Painting love with crimson flow
Ran out of blood and hope
So I paint you no more"

I must say I'm not sure how to interpret it now that I've read your comments on these verses, but my original thought was that he went through hell and pain in love ("painting love with crimson flow"), but now he doesn't have the strength or will to continue with that pointless suffering (he "ran out of blood"), so he gives up ("so I paint you no more"). Mind you, this is MY interpretation of the lines, which might as well be wrong, so if anyone is sure about their meaning, please tell us :)

My Interpretation:My interpretation of this song was similar to Rose131's.

Two lovers in a quarreling relationship find that their love is bittersweet. The man in this relationship is telling his side of the story by saying that he's doubting her love, so he hides the key to his heart (metaphorically speaking) and acts tough. That way, even through all of the quarrels, behind that tough exterior he's delirious with thoughts of his own love for her that even the worst moments are considered the sweetest. Lust and War are referring to the best and worst moments of this horrid relationship. No matter the circumstances, everything was considered something else to start a fight on. Love stopped being a part of the relationship a long time ago. We see that hope of this love returning is fading away.
In the chorus, he's beginning to feel as if Love itself is against him entirely for this relationship. Despair and Love, depicted as if two actual characters rather than feelings, block his ability to have hope of ever having her love once more. Therefore, he feels that his heart no longer feels the same and begins to have doubt of his so called love and hope. Love and despair within their relationship was similar to a war. There are times of fighting, and times of peace. Even then, there were breakdowns and weeping of what their love has become. As their world comes crashing down they feel once more like their relationship is a lost cause.
In the next verse, he has given up and just embraces what little he has left. He's saying no matter what, we're lost in this hopeless romanticism and all we do for each other is remind us of something we'll never again once have.
In the next part of the song, he's telling us that he has given up love, he sees no hope or reason in it. Meaning, he's feeling apathetic about the whole situation. Obviously, this means that he also gave up on the hope for love with anyone else.
His own hell in his mind is the worst there is, considering Hades only has 9 circles. He feels that he has descended to the remnants of his sanity where he once more feels that love for her. He feels that maybe even Lucifer himself has taken over and has ripped his hope and love apart. It doesn't matter to him where he is because in the lasting remnants of his sanity, he still feels hope and love and crawls under "Lucifer's claws" just to give her one last kiss. Meaning, he doesn't care how bad it gets, he still loves her and hopes for her love in return..

    "There's No hope."

General Comment:I think it hase to do with trying to holed a relationship that has no hope and we are to blind to see the signs that show there is no turning back to what you and that person used to be so it becomes bitter "I gave up long ago painted love with crimsion flow ran out of blood and hope so I paint you no more" = I give up but I tryed so hard to make it work. "My hell begens from the 10th and decends to the curcle sixhundred threescore and six and frome there I crawled beneath lucifers claw just for one last kiss" = a metephor of how much hell he went threw for this girl and how wors it got over time

General Comment:On "Digital Versatile Doom", in an interview Valo said the song was about a relationship he had with a woman, but their relationship decayed due to all the emotional baggage he was carrying. Valo is the greatest Song writer!

General Comment:So, staindpearls, I'm not the only one who picked up on the Dante reference, am I?

The whole Venus Doom album refers to the nine Circles Of Hell, at least, that's what Ville said in an interview.

Anyway, Sleepwalking Past Hope's intro is another example of what Burton is capable of as a pianist.
Also, what the band is capable of as a whole.
And what Linde is capable of as a guitarist.

Personally, this song is my second favourite, after The Sacrament, and represents a love doomed to eternal damnation, possibly due to it being forbidden (anyone else getting a slight Join Me In Death or Romeo and Juliet vibe from this song?)

So, once again, HIM show that they are the greatest band in the world.

And once again, Burton shows that he is GOD.

General Comment:This song is actually referring to the circles of hell in Dante’s inferno the lines “My hell begins from the 10th and descends to the circle Six hundred threescore and six and from there I crawl beneath Lucifer's claws just for one last kiss” I think is Ville’s interpretation of the story.

General Comment:Ah... Sleepwalking Past Hope... possibly my favorite song off of Venus Doom.
The poetry like lyrics are memorable, dark, and just plain fuckin' awsome, as well as guitar, bass, drums, keyboard, everything is perfect.
The opening guitar riff is, hands down, my favorite HIM riff. It just sounds so... Epic.
I always jam to this song with my band... and i'm pretty sure they're pissed at me for playing it so damn much.

"My hell begins from the 10th and descends to the circle
    Six hundred threescore and six
And from there I crawl beneath Lucifer's claws just for one last kiss..."

These lines inparticular seem to jump out to me.
    So Poetic and Dark...
    *shivers slightly*
On my list of all time greatest lyric quotes, this one would rank pretty high on said list.
