You close your eyes and kiss your hand then you blow it
But it isn't meant for me, and I notice
If the choice was ours alone,
Then why'd we both choose letting go?
Does it end like this?
Time never had a chance to heal your heart
Just a number always counting down to a new start
If you always knew the truth
Then the world would spin around you
Are you dizzy yet?
[Chorus:]
Respectfully, so honestly I'm calling out
Do you hear the conversation we talk about?
I'll back away to the safety of a quiet house
If there's half a chance in this moment
When your eyes meet mine, we show it
All talk and not a lot to think, we were living dreams
And shame never crept close to our naked feet
If there's something left to lose
Then don't let me wear out my shoes
That I still walk in.
I tried, but it rang and rang; I called all night
On a pay phone, remember those from another life?
If everything I meant to you
You can't lick and seal then fold in two
Then I've been so blind.
[Chorus]
Oh, oh take it all back, take your first, your last, your only
Oh, oh take it all back, take it all back
Everything you showed me
Oh, oh, this must be how it feels when the feelings goes
I told you as I haven't, I never felt this way
You said "I have this shot that stops my clock"
Baby it's okay
You said you'd never have regrets
Jesus is there someone yet who got that wish?
Did you get yours, babe?
[Chorus]
But it isn't meant for me, and I notice
If the choice was ours alone,
Then why'd we both choose letting go?
Does it end like this?
Time never had a chance to heal your heart
Just a number always counting down to a new start
If you always knew the truth

If you always knew the truth then the world will spin around you
Are you dizzy yet?
-If you always knew how much I loved you, “the world would spin around you,” are you dizzy yet? Are you really taking this all in? Does this matter to you, did my feelings ever really matter to you when push came to shove?
Respectfully, so honestly, I'm calling out
Do you hear the conversation we talk around?
I'll back away to the safety of a quiet house
If there's half a chance in this moment
When your eyes meet mine, we show it off
-He knows that they're discussing their relationship, but neither one of them will acknowledge the possibility of trying again for whatever reason. They have probably broken up before, and knew immediately if they were to be in contact with each other that would happen. It begins with small talk, eventually delving into something deeper. She says she’s over him. He says “seriously? Respectfully, some honesty, I’m calling out, do you hear the conversation we talk around?” hoping she would be honest with him instead of talking about their conversation, actually HEAR it and understand it shows how they really feel about one another. They probably had issues with her being honest about how much she really cared for him at some point.
“I’ll back away to the safety of a quiet house” is that he’s going to back away and let her figure it out for herself, that they love one another and what it is they are avoiding talking about. “If there’s half a chance in this moment when your eyes meet mine, we show it off” is the moment when their eyes meet, everybody can see the love between them no matter how much they avoid having the conversation about them as a couple.
I tried, but it rang and rang, I called all night
On a payphone, remember those from another life?
If everything I meant to you
You can't lick and seal then fold in two
Then I've been so blind
-He’s reminding her of the better times in their relationship. He’s trying to bring her back to the beginning, a time when it was new and she will think of the relationship fondly. “Remember those, from another life?” Another life is the life she had with him, the beginning when everything was great between them. He realizes how much time has actually passed.
“If everything I meant to you, you can lick and seal then fold in two, then I’ve been so blind.” if I meant so very much to you, how can you just give up on us like that? Have I been so blind to see that I didn’t mean so much? Or did I? he was honesty from her.
Aw, aw take it all back, take your first, your last, your only
Aw, aw take it all back, take it all back, everything you showed me
Aw, aw this must be how it feels
When the feeling goes on...
I think this means that he was her first love. “Take it all back, your first, your last, your only” means that she said he was her only true love. She wanted him forever as he did her. “Everything you showed me” must be the love she showed him, her life, letting him in. He still feels everything she showed him, he still wants to be everything she showed him and be in her life. He’s saying “If I meant this much to you, and you let me go so easily, it must have been a lie. Take back everything we did together because to you it meant nothing. To me it meant everything.” “This must be how it feels when the feeling goes on” are the feelings and how they feel when they aren’t reciprocated. This must be how it feels to not let go when the other person has.
I told you as I haven't, I never felt this way
You said I have the shot that stops my clock
Baby it's okay
You said you never have regrets
Jesus, is there someone yet who got that wish?
Did you get yours, babe?
He’s never felt this way about anybody. Saying “I told you as I haven’t, I never felt this way” means he still hasn’t felt that way about anybody else since her. “You said you never have regrets, Jesus is there someone who got that wish?” He wonders if she regrets what happened between them although she says she doesn’t regret anything. “Does anyone ever not regret things they’ve done? No. Did you get your wish of never regretting anything? Cause I’m sure there are things you regret from this relationship that could have been done better or differently.”
Again, he reminds her to be honest with him about their current state of relationship and past relationship.
This song is reflective of my relationship with my ex. We talk and dance around what we know is true-we still care for another but can’t do anything about it. He’s going to be in a family member’s wedding party, as am I. I know that whenever our eyes meet they say things that we can’t say. It’s undeniable.
Verse one: I think that he's seeing her again, after they have been broken up for a while, and he sees her maybe looking or talking to a different guy and blowing a kiss that isn't meant for him. This makes him miss her I think and he wants her back. He then asks her why they both chose to let go of the relationship they had, and asks her if they'll ever have another shot at being together. I think the "Time never had a chance to heal your heart.." and the "just a number...." parts are saying that maybe he thinks that she didn't wait long enough before getting into another relationship? The number part might mean that she had a lot of boyfriends after him, and the new start part might be her breaking up with them then moving on to someone else. I think that he's saying that she always knew the truth, which is why the world is "spinning around her", which makes her dizzy.
Chorus: I think he is asking her to tell the truth about whether or not she's really HEARING their conversation. The saftey of a quiet house part and the eyes part confuse me though, anyone have any ideas?
I'm not sure about the second verse either..
Verse three: he says he's never felt this way about anyone. She says that he has the ability to "stop his clock", or maybe get back with her? She says she doesn't regret anything, not even the two of them breaking up, but he doesn't believe it. Also, he's not talking to Jesus. He's saying Jesus! Like as an interjection.
That's just how I see it. If anyone thinks differently, feel free to share. :)
And it competes for my favorite JEW song. Ever. There's a lot of emotion in this one, and I find it truly gripping.
"I told you as I hovered, "I never felt this way," you said, "I have the shot that stopped my clock, baby, it's okay." you said you never had regrets, but jesus, is there someone yet, who got that wish? Did you get yours, babe?"
Ahh. :)
I really don't think the "shot that stopped my clock" was in any way a reference to contraception or babies. It's about being in love...about having that shot with someone who could change everything for you. For the "characters," per say, in this song, it's the shot that they left behind.
In that version, the choruses (all of them) go
Respectfully, some honesty I'm asking now
Do your hear the conversation we talk around
Oh back away to the safety of a quiet house
If there's half a chance in this moment,
When your eyes meet mine we'll show it off
I personally think those lyrics make more sense then the ones from the album version. And, seriously, who doesn't relate this song?
That's my favourite lyric of all time so I had to correct what you had put.
not 'Caesar Says..' LOL.
aha, chocolate stocked in my car. love it.
Jimmy Eat World rock. x
basically, the song is about a great love between two people that for x, y, and z reasons, hasn't been consistent. the storyteller knows he's in love. and he believes that the other character knows they return this love. but clearly, they are dealing with some serious issues such as denial, fear - they are overwhelmed. this is life changing love right here. and so:
'You close your eyes and kiss your hand, then you blow it.
But it isn't meant for me, and I notice.
If the choice was ours alone,
Then why'd we both choose letting go?
Does it end like this?'
oh, what up, long time love of mine. damn, this is kind of awkward. it's been so long. and you look better than i remembered. but damn.. who's that you're blowing kisses to? not me, that's for sure. remind me why we gave up on this? i refuse to admit that it's.. over.
'Time never had a chance to heal your heart
Just a number counting down to a new start
If you always knew the truth
Then the world would spin around you
Are you dizzy yet?'
i realise you've been burned really bad in the past but a fast turnover of insignificant partners is not going to heal you. besides, everyone needs a little heartbreak. to say you've never been hurt.. well, that would make you next to god!
'Respectfully, so honestly I'm calling out
Do you hear the conversation we talk about?
Back away to the safety of a quiet house
If there's half a chance in this moment
When your eyes meet mine, we show it off/shout it out?'
so, i'm being honest here: can you just listen to us for a moment? can you look at where we are right now? how can you deny we're connected. if you can, i'll leave right now. i'll go home. i'll keep quiet. but if there's half a chance, i have to know. and if you ask me.. it's obvious. every time our eyes meet.
'All talk and not a lot to think, we're living dreams.
And shame never crept close to our naked feet
If there's something left to lose,
Then don't let me wear out my shoes
That I still walk in.'
we talk so much i barely have time to figure out what it all means. and remember how it was when we spent that night together? i've never felt more comfortable with someone. if you think we could have that again then please, don't let me walk away. just this once, keep me with you.
'I tried, but it rang and rang, I called all night
On a payphone, remember those from another life?
If everything I've meant to you,
You can lick and seal and fold in two,
Then I've been so blind.'
i tried to get in touch with you. i tried to reach you, for a long time. i went to that place we used to go. being there with you almost feels like a past life. but where were you? you wouldn't answer. what is up with that, dawg? have a drawn a line under me? if all we've been through is something you can just write down, tear up, burn, and get over.. then i am a freaking fool.
'Respectfully, some honesty, I'm asking now
Do you hear the conversation we talk about?
Back away to the safety of a quiet house
If there's half a chance in this moment
When your eyes meet mine, we show it off.'
so, please, have a little respect for me here. i know you felt it at one point. i know you still do. i mean, i'm repeating the chorus. if this doesn't get you, what will.
'Oh, oh take it all back, take your first, your last, your only.
Oh, oh take it all back, take it all back,
Everything you showed me.
Oh, oh, this must be how it feels when the feeling goes...'
i can't take this, okay? i can't take the memories. i can't take knowing you're right for me. so if we can't be together then please, just take it all back. that night we spent together. showing me your world. this is totally how it feels to get over you. i am empowered. oh, wait...
'I told you as I hovered, I never felt this way.
you said 'I had the shot that stops my clock,
Baby it's okay'
You said you never had regrets,
Jesus is there someone yet who got that wish?
Did you get yours babe?'
(note: i may be wrong here, but this verse seems to be hinting at an abortion, which would make a sensical climax to the song.)
i told you while i was waiting for you that i've never felt like this before. you said it's okay, i dealt with it, we're not having a baby. you said you have no regrets. if only that were ever true.
'Respectfully, some honesty, I'm asking now
Do you hear the conversation we talk about?
I'll back away to the safety of a quiet house
If there's half a chance in this moment
When your eyes meet mine, we show it off'
i remember it all like it was yesterday. and i still love you. and it feels like i always will. so please, just be honest with me, because i have to know how i'm supposed to feel about this. signed, the one who loves you.
END.
