You close your eyes and kiss your hand, then you blow it
But it isn't meant for me, and I noticed
If the choice was ours alone,
Then why'd we both choose letting go?
Does it end like this?

Time never had a chance to heal your heart
Just a number always counting down to a new start
If you always knew the truth then the world will spin around you
Are you dizzy yet?

Respectfully, so honestly, I'm calling out
Do you hear the conversation we talk around?
I'll back away to the safety of a quiet house
If there's half a chance in this moment
When your eyes meet mine, we show it off

All talk and not a lot to think, we're living dreams
And shame never crept close to our naked feet
If there's something left to lose
Then don't let me wear out my shoes
That I still walk in

I tried, but it rang and rang, I called all night
On a payphone, remember those from another life?
If everything I meant to you
You can't lick and seal then fold in two
Then I've been so blind

Respectfully, so honestly, I'm asking now
Do you hear the conversation we talk about?
I'll back the way to the safety of a quiet house
If there's half a chance in this moment
When your eyes meet mine, we show it off

Aw, aw take it all back, take your first, your last, your only
Aw, aw take it all back, take it all back, everything you showed me
Aw, aw this must be how it feels
When the feeling goes on...

I told you as I haven't, I never felt this way
You said I have the shot that stops my clock
Baby it's okay
You said you never have regrets
Jesus, is there someone yet who got that wish?
Did you get yours, babe?

Respectfully, so honestly, I'm asking now
Do you hear the conversation we talk about?
I'll back away to the safety of a quiet house
If there's half a chance in this moment
When your eyes meet mine, we show it off.

    Song Meaning

This song is definitely about a failed relationship and struggling to accept that it's over. He's seeing her again after significant time has passed and realizes she has moved on either somewhat or completely, and he's wondering why it really ended in the first place when he realizes she is with somebody else. For whatever reason, it didn't work out and although he thought initially it was the best thing to do, he is realizing the good times outweighed the bad seeing her, being around her again. "Does it end like this?" It's like he can't believe it's really over seeing her blow kisses to somebody else like she did him.

If you always knew the truth then the world will spin around you Are you dizzy yet?

-If you always knew how much I loved you, “the world would spin around you,” are you dizzy yet? Are you really taking this all in? Does this matter to you, did my feelings ever really matter to you when push came to shove?

Respectfully, so honestly, I'm calling out Do you hear the conversation we talk around? I'll back away to the safety of a quiet house If there's half a chance in this moment When your eyes meet mine, we show it off

-He knows that they're discussing their relationship, but neither one of them will acknowledge the possibility of trying again for whatever reason. They have probably broken up before, and knew immediately if they were to be in contact with each other that would happen. It begins with small talk, eventually delving into something deeper. She says she’s over him. He says “seriously? Respectfully, some honesty, I’m calling out, do you hear the conversation we talk around?” hoping she would be honest with him instead of talking about their conversation, actually HEAR it and understand it shows how they really feel about one another. They probably had issues with her being honest about how much she really cared for him at some point.

“I’ll back away to the safety of a quiet house” is that he’s going to back away and let her figure it out for herself, that they love one another and what it is they are avoiding talking about. “If there’s half a chance in this moment when your eyes meet mine, we show it off” is the moment when their eyes meet, everybody can see the love between them no matter how much they avoid having the conversation about them as a couple.

I tried, but it rang and rang, I called all night On a payphone, remember those from another life? If everything I meant to you You can't lick and seal then fold in two Then I've been so blind

-He’s reminding her of the better times in their relationship. He’s trying to bring her back to the beginning, a time when it was new and she will think of the relationship fondly. “Remember those, from another life?” Another life is the life she had with him, the beginning when everything was great between them. He realizes how much time has actually passed.

“If everything I meant to you, you can lick and seal then fold in two, then I’ve been so blind.” if I meant so very much to you, how can you just give up on us like that? Have I been so blind to see that I didn’t mean so much? Or did I? he was honesty from her.

Aw, aw take it all back, take your first, your last, your only Aw, aw take it all back, take it all back, everything you showed me Aw, aw this must be how it feels When the feeling goes on...

I think this means that he was her first love. “Take it all back, your first, your last, your only” means that she said he was her only true love. She wanted him forever as he did her. “Everything you showed me” must be the love she showed him, her life, letting him in. He still feels everything she showed him, he still wants to be everything she showed him and be in her life. He’s saying “If I meant this much to you, and you let me go so easily, it must have been a lie. Take back everything we did together because to you it meant nothing. To me it meant everything.” “This must be how it feels when the feeling goes on” are the feelings and how they feel when they aren’t reciprocated. This must be how it feels to not let go when the other person has.

I told you as I haven't, I never felt this way You said I have the shot that stops my clock Baby it's okay You said you never have regrets Jesus, is there someone yet who got that wish? Did you get yours, babe?

He’s never felt this way about anybody. Saying “I told you as I haven’t, I never felt this way” means he still hasn’t felt that way about anybody else since her. “You said you never have regrets, Jesus is there someone who got that wish?” He wonders if she regrets what happened between them although she says she doesn’t regret anything. “Does anyone ever not regret things they’ve done? No. Did you get your wish of never regretting anything? Cause I’m sure there are things you regret from this relationship that could have been done better or differently.”

Again, he reminds her to be honest with him about their current state of relationship and past relationship.

This song is reflective of my relationship with my ex. We talk and dance around what we know is true-we still care for another but can’t do anything about it. He’s going to be in a family member’s wedding party, as am I. I know that whenever our eyes meet they say things that we can’t say. It’s undeniable.

"On a payphone, remember those from another life?"

reminds me of Futures... I hope that's what they meant.

Just a few corrections I'm hearing...

You close you eyes and kiss hand, then you blow it. But it isn't meant for me, and I notice (know this?).

If you always knew the truth, then the world would spin around you Are you dizzy yet?

Respectfully, some honestly I'm calling out Do you hear the conversation we talk about? I'll back away to the safety of a quiet house

All talk and not allowed to think, we were living dreams And she never crept close to our naked feet

If everything I meant to you, you can lick and seal then fold in two, then I've been so blind.

Take it all back, take your first, your last, your only. Take it all back, take it all back, Everything you showed me. This must be how it feels when the feeling goes.

You said I have the shot that starts my clock Baby it's ok You said you never have regrets Jesus, is there someone yet who got that wish? Did you get yours, babe?

Those are just a few of the things I've heard, although some of them still don't sound quite right, but this is an awesome song. Gives me a lot of the same feelings that "23" does.

This is a great song but I think you've got a lot wrong:

you close your eyes and kiss your hand and you blow it. but it isn't meant for me, and i know this.

    ....

i told you as i hear her i never felt this way you said "i have this shot that stops my heart, baby it's okay' you said you'd never have regrets jesus is there someone yet that got that list?

I believe he is saying "she just said 'there's someone else'

    not

    "Caesar says there's someone else"

other than that, it looks fine. And it is a great song.

I think much like another song “Anti-Matter” (that's also on the same album as this song), this one is also is inspired by a horrifying van crash the band experienced on Nov 3, 2022. This, much like the other track, sounds like it's an extension what they shared while huddled in the wreckage, as they helped frontman Garrett Russell stem the bleeding from his head wound while he was under the temporary effects of a concussion. The track speaks of where the mind goes at the most desperate & desolate of times, when it just about slips away to all but disconnect itself, and the aftermath.

Mountain Song
Jane's Addiction
Jane's Addiction vocalist Perry Farrell gives Adam Reader some heartfelt insight into Jane’s Addiction's hard rock manifesto "Mountain Song", which was the second single from their revolutionary album Nothing's Shocking. Mountain song was first recorded in 1986 and appeared on the soundtrack to the film Dudes starring Jon Cryer. The version on Nothing's Shocking was re-recorded in 1988. "'Mountain Song' was actually about... I hate to say it but... drugs. Climbing this mountain and getting as high as you can, and then coming down that mountain," reveals Farrell. "What it feels to descend from the mountain top... not easy at all. The ascension is tough but exhilarating. Getting down is... it's a real bummer. Drugs is not for everybody obviously. For me, I wanted to experience the heights, and the lows come along with it." "There's a part - 'Cash in now honey, cash in Miss Smith.' Miss Smith is my Mother; our last name was Smith. Cashing in when she cashed in her life. So... she decided that, to her... at that time, she was desperate. Life wasn't worth it for her, that was her opinion. Some people think, never take your life, and some people find that their life isn't worth living. She was in love with my Dad, and my Dad was not faithful to her, and it broke her heart. She was very desperate and she did something that I know she regrets."

Ed Sheeran tells a story of unsuccessfully trying to feel “Amazing.” This track is about the being weighed down by emotional stress despite valiant attempts to find some positivity in the situation. This track was written by Ed Sheeran from the perspective of his friend. From the track, we see this person fall deeper into the negative thoughts and slide further down the path of mental torment with every lyric.
