To me it is a relationship from a while back which is one that he holds dear,Like a first love.
Even though they spoke after they split and the hope remained that they could get back to where they once were things never clicked the same when they met up.
The lyric (could going through the motions lead to real emotions?) Really strikes me as that first meeting after all the talking about the starting again,Going through the motions reminds me of the idle nervous chit chat whilst wondering what the other one is thinking during that first meeting back after all the talking on the phone.
The pinnacle lyrics in this song are in the chorus "Well here's to living in the moment cause it passed" for me that is what the essence of the song is. And I know for me personally are the ones that I can most relate too.
This is a beautiful song from Jim and the guys, a definite highlight on "Chase This Light". Everyone can relate to this at some point in their lives. I can right now. I miss you Megan...
like when he says he "can never be the one you want" or that hes "not your anything" to the groupie.
and he tells the her... "you're only good as what you're good for" (sex?) and tells her "i'll stay in my place and you'll stay in yours"...
and then he wonders "would i see you tonight at a place we go?" ... ie when he tours to a different city, etc.
and he realizes maybe he fell for the groupie when he says "going through the motions leads to real emotions"... ie: sex leads to love.
ok, probably nobody see's this perspective of mines. but i just watched "almost famous" and this song reminded me of that movie.

Obviously it made her insecure b/c she really loved this guy and he just rejected her without a second thought.

For some reason i imagine someone holding up a wine glass. Sort of like "cheers!". The "moment" could refer to that whole time she loved him and waited for him to change his mind, and so she's remembering it. THat's my interpretation. It's wat came to mind when i first listened to the song. Cause it reminded me of the situation i'm in. I guess the girl is really me then. But i havent told him i'm done yet. I only imagine it in my head. I would be afraid that i'd hurt him. Besides i dont blame him for the pain i feel

There's this girl in my life who I've been spending a lot of time with and I'm absolutely crazy about.
I can't get her off of my mind, and I've been falling pretty hard for her.
We finally got to talking the other night and the topic of how we felt and where things were heading came up.
I came clean and told her I wish things were more than they are right now.
She told me she didn't think she could be the person I'd want her to be.
And all I want right now is to tell her to just take a chance and see where it goes, but most of all, I want to tell her that I'm not crazy about because of who I think she CAN be. I'm falling for her because of who she is.
It's probably not what this song is really about, but it's how I feel everytime I hear it.
Theres a girl like that for me who even after 3 years of our falling out she still haunts my brain everyday.

And that's now what happened. I took the chance, and she wouldn't. And now we're both left broken by it, and it just drives me crazy that it happened the way it did
There's a missing line in these lyrics-it's "Going through the motions, leads to real emotions." This leads me to believe that he never intended on having anything more than a fling with this girl, but he actually started to have feelings for her. Great song.
This song is obviously about a female in a relationship but could be about a friend either.
