wow cant believe noones posted on this song. ive got a fairly simple explaination to this song. i think its about lust and pornography and how maybe people are sucked into it but ultimately it is not fulfilling and will only lead to dissapointment and sexual frustration. very beautiful song i mean fucking hell jeez its soooooooooo beautiful

This is definitely a highlight from In Rainbows. I'm not entirely sure, but I think this is about vulnerability. The person tries to be someone they're not ("paint yourself white") to try and fix a broken relationship ("there'll be something missing"). But once things start looking up, things start going bad again ("Now that you feel it, you don't). Then you start to lose hope of every reviving your relationship.

On another note, this could also be applied to life in general. You put on an act in attempt to get through the trials of life, but things never seem to go well for too long, so you just give up.

I really have no clue as to what the last line means. But that's my two cents :)

this far, my fav song off In Rainbows, I think it could be about when your mind play tricks on you with bad thoughts and for a moment you feel tempted to make them real. Its like saying to yourself "dont you even think about it!!"

In the other hand it could be about pretending to be someone you are not.

ive only had a few listens, but my personal interpretation was after a one night stand, or a purely sexual relationship, he's wishing for something with more substance, but he knows he wont get it.

this song stands out
i think it's about how there's no escape from a boring every day life
and "how dare you think of doing anything else?"

i downloaded it (at $o.oo) and plan on buying the disc box on dec. 3rd
you get bonus songs and such so it's totally worth it!!

the reason there are few comments on this song is ,i think, it used to be called 'big ideas'.
i heard this version whrn i saw them in blackpool and was blown away as we all were. it's quite a sexy sound, almost funk bassline.
the song i always thought was about generaly being told that whatever your dreams are they wont happen, like when you see a careers adviser and she tells you you can't be what you want cos your a dreamer.

I think this song is really very straightforward. To me it's about adultery, "don't get any big ideas/ you'll go to hell for what your dirty mind is thinking" because if you do cheat it'll be empty "just as you feel it you don't" and you'll have to live the rest of your life covering it up "paint yourself white"

Just curious...but does anyone know where I can get a recording of the previous version...Big Ideas (Don't Get Any)? I was at the show at the Greek last year, and before they played this, Thom introduced it as a song that not many people would know (presumably since it wasn't available as a realease anywhwere) but, I was one that actually did know it, and sang right along with Thom - much to the chagrin of the people around me, I'm sure - but was unaware as to where I had heard it before. I know, I know, what a horrible fan that makes me, but now that it's on IR i want to find any live or original recordings to listen to. Please help me, anybody.

This song used to be called "Big Ideas (Don't Get Any)" (ha, my username ha). In this version, the lyrics had these extra lines: "She stands stark naked and she beckons you to bed
don't go, you'll only want to come back again". This makes it pretty clear that it's about adultery, but it might be more than just that. This is such a great song.

I can't decide which version I like better, but I've warmed up to the new version a lot more than before -- at first, I hated the new arrangement. Thom's voice is just godly in this one. I love how hollow yet celestial the whole thing sounds. Gives our despondency and desperation such beauty.

This sounds like someone who is trying to make it into the entertainment industry and he or she has to do demoralizing things in order to get a job, but in return doesnt get a break in showbiz.
