Who's to know if your soul will fade at all
The one you sold to fool the world
You lost your self-esteem along the way
Yeah

Good god your comin' up with reasons
Good god your dragging it out
Good god its the changing of the seasons
I feel so raped
So follow me down

And just fake it if your out of direction
Fake it if you don't belong
Fake it if you feel like a infection
Woah your such a fuckin' hypocrite

And you should know that the lies wont hide your falls
No sense in hiding all of yours
You gave up on your dreams along the way
Yeah

Good god your comin' up with reasons
Good god your dragging it out
Good god its the changing of the seasons
I feel so raped
So follow me down

And just fake it if your out of direction
Fake it if you don't belong
Fake it if you feel like a infection

Woah your such a fuckin' hypocrite

Whoah whoah

I can fake with the best of anyone
I can fake with the best of em all
I can fake with the best of anyone
I can fake it all

Who's to know if your soul will fade at all
The one you sold to fool the world
You lost your self-esteem along the way
Yeah

Good god your comin' up with reasons
Good god your dragging it out
Good god its the changing of the seasons
I feel so raped
So follow me down

And just fake it if your out of direction
Fake it if you don't belong
Fake it if you feel like a infection
Woah your such a fuckin' hypocrite

Fake it if your out of direction
Fake it if you don't belong
Fake it if you feel like a infection
Woah your such a fuckin' hypocrite

General Comment:I always thought he said fake it if you feel lack of affection rather than like an infection.

Lyric Correction:Its not "you lose your self esteem along the way," it is "you lost your self esteem along the way" its obvius because it makes more sense in context

General Comment:Everyone is a hypocrite wether they mean to or not. We all make up reasons and we all think for ourselves first. We as a population create stereo types and those stereo types unfortunatly are in such a mass that they are applyed to everyone. We can hide in our facade and fake our lives but eventually we will be found needing and caught looking.

My Interpretation:My brother has pretty much the opposite view on this song as most of the comments. He feels like the singer is actually TELLING you to fake it, and there's no sarcasm involved.

He explained it like some scene kid trying to explain why he's emo, and some guy comes up to him and just says "You know what, stop coming up with reasons, stop dragging it out and just fake it like the rest of us do if you don't belong."

Basically stop bitching and join the human race.

I personally hate this interpretation... But it makes as much sense as any.

General Comment:This songs meaning is pretty clear-cut. I think "Who's to know if your soul will fade at all, the one you sold to fool the world..." It means that when you cast away your personality so that you can be what everyone else wants you to be, your soul can get damaged and you can lose your own sense of identity.

General Comment:If it's not about Amy Lee and all that (which it probably is), I still can't tell whether its saying faking it is good. It could be saying just go with it and fake it if you have to, because you do have to sometimes or it could be sarcastic, and I can't tell.

My Interpretation:I don't know much about the Shaun/Amy Lee relationship, but I don't think this song is about their relationship.
In fact, Amy Lee created a song with a similar meaning (Everybody's Fool), although I think it was more about guilt for being someone who was trying to lie to everyone and blend in and ended up making a fool of herself.
I believe this song is about people who "fake it" and change themselves to fit in with the rest of society. They try to blend in and go with the crowd, and they "sell their souls" by betraying themselves to changing themselves to "fool the world", or to fit in. They gave up their dreams and started to lie just so they wouldn't feel like the black sheep.
"Fake it if your out of direction
Fake it if you don't belong
Fake it if you feel like infection"
Basically, if you feel like you're an outcast, mold yourself into the scene, fake it so that you do belong.

General Comment:This song is awsome I cant get enough of it but to me I must agree with thatoneguy, whateva, amplive, and kikimonian...I would think this is to do with a girl and with lies she is telling.."coming up with reasons" he feels "raped" meaning used and heartbroken so "fake it" so he doesnt have to feel the truth not to mention your such a fuckin hypocrite to me means shes blaming him for things shes guilty of...
