Lyrics for Critical Acclaim as interpreted by lostprophet86

Critical Acclaim Lyrics
(Shh, be quiet, you might piss somebody off)
Like me motherfucker you’ve been at it for too long.
While you feed off all those insecurities, you stand in front of me and bite the hand that feeds.

Self righteousness is wearing thin (lies inside your head, your best friend)
Heart bleeds but not for fellow man (broken glass, your fake reflection)

I've had enough, it’s time for something real
Don’t respect the words your speaking
Gone too far
A clone

So, how does it feel to know that someone’s kid in the heart of America has blood on their hands fighting to defend your rights so you can maintain the lifestyle that insults his family’s existence
Well where I'm from we have a special salute waved high in the air towards all those pompous assholes who spend their days pointing fingers.

Fuck you

(Shh, be quiet, you might piss somebody off)
Like the heartbeat of this country when antagonized too long
I’ll be damned if you count me in as part of your generous hypocrisy; collecting enemies.

Tabloid gossip queen, worthless man (There’s no need for us to bury you)
Selfish agenda, once again (right this way, you dug your own grave)

I've had enough, it’s time for something real
Don’t respect the words your speaking
Gone too far
A clone

All the way from the east to the west we got this high society looking down on their very foundation.
Constantly reminding us that our actions are the cause of all their problems.
Pointing their fingers in every direction.
Blaming their own nation for who wins elections.
They never contributed a fucking thing to the country they love to criticize.

Excuse the obscene
Ignore the untrue
Depictions we see
Try and get through
Admitting mistakes can hurt
I’m not the last, but I sure ain’t the first

(Shh, be quiet, you might piss somebody off)

Self righteousness is wearing thin (lies inside your head, your best friend)
Heart bleeds but not for fellow man (broken glass, your fake reflection)

I've had enough, it’s time for something real
Don’t respect the words your speaking
Gone too far

Awesome song! the lyrics seem to be mostly correct, although it probably isn't "fight the hand that fades". it might be "fight/bite the hand that FEEDS" :) Anyway, thanks for posting this! I was curious as to what the lyrics were

Cryptic lyrics... this song seems two-sided to me.

It can be interpreted as critical of the War in Iraq and President Bush. On the other hand, there are references which seem critical of people who speak only negative things about the war and the country.

For the first part:

"telling them its all for something real
dont forsake the words you speak, you've gone too far, its gone"

This part sounds like it could be bashing Bush for lying about the true casues of the war. "Telling them it's all for something real" while forsaking "the words you speak" is like what many people think Bush is doing right now (the great majority of the population disapproves of Bush and the War in Iraq mind you). In fact, I don't see how this statement could be interpreted as critical of people against the war -- if it is, then what lies are these "activists" and anti-war people saying? Moreover, what is the "all for something real" part refering to? Telling them it's all for [Democracy] and [Freedom] are appropriate substitues for "real." This is why the line seems to be talking about Bush and his rhetoric. What else could be substituted for this line that implicates the anti-war crowd?

But a line that clearly seems of the anti-war crowd is:

"blaming their own nation for who wins elections
they've never contributed a fucking thing to the country they love to criticize"

For instance, some people blame the country for voting Bush into office. They believe that had the country not been so stupid (twice), we wouldn't be in the mess we are today. A7X seems to be giving the middle finger to these people for only criticizing instead of contributing and appreciating what they have.

What does everyone else think? I'm not even 100% about everything I just said. It's just my first stab at understanding the song.

p.s. The music is definitely kick ass. But I don't really like the lyrics; they're not clear enough -- but hey, whatever floats your boat, right?

If you look at the meaning for M.I.A. it was written for M.Shadows friends in Iraq. This song in my opinion, is about the people who continuously protest the war, instead of supporting the troops. Avenged Sevenfold is not a band who is pro war, or against the war. They just want those kids in Iraq to come home safe. Thats what this song means.

I've seen in videos of A7X they say that they aren't a political band and don't intend to become one so I really don't think it is a song bashing Bush, the war, etc. I think the song is bashing all of the people and anti-flag bands who bash on America but don't ever do anything constructive to help the situation.

"pointing the fingers in every direction
blaming their own nation for who wins elections
theyve never contributed a fucking thing to the country they love to criticize"

These are the most telling lines, IMO.

"so how does it feel to know that someones kid in the heart of america
has blood on their hands, fighting to defend your rights
so you can maintain the lifestyle that insults this family's existance
well, where I'm from we have a special salute we wave high in the air
towards all those pompous asses who spend their days pointing fingers"

This also supports the idea that they are bashing those that only point fingers and don't contribute to the solution. M. Shadows is pissed that people in America are making a disgrace of all the soldiers that fight for American's freedom and rights.

Lyric wise, this is one of their most powerful if not the most powerful songs thus far.

I think the lyrics for these sections are more like this, could be wrong though. Most of them make more sense in this context, too:

ll 4:
you stand in front of me and bite the hand that feeds

ll. 9-10:
telling them its all for something real
dont forsake the words you speak, youve gone too far, acclaim

ll. 20-23:
(tabloid gossip, we want less real)
theres no need for us to bury you
(selfish agenda, once again)
right this way, deter your own grave

ll. 28:
excuse the obscene, ignore the untrue

whoa. I've literally just heard this for the first time.

It's amazing.

I'm pretty sure it's not a political thing, i agree with drunken buzby.

It's musically an amazing song. Lyrically strong and damn exciting, I can't wait for the album to drop now XD

xx

Oh, and who else sings in this song? It doesn't sound like just Shadows.. is it the Rev or someone? Or are my ears seriously decieving me? :D

this bit is the bit i mean "telling them its all for something real, dont forsake the words you speak, you've gone too far, its gone"

Its Jimmy (The Rev) singing. If you've heard his and Syn's old sideproject, Pinkly Smooth, you'll easily be able to recognise his amazing voice.
All of these interpretations are pretty spot on in my eyes, though I agree with Scootman1990's lyric alterations.
I reallly cant wait for the new album now!

Sorry guys, I screwed up a little, I have resubmitted the correct lyrics as follows, so hopefully they will update!

**** EDITED, PLEASE CHANGE OVER MY OLD ONE, THANKS GUY ****

(Shh, quiet, you might piss somebody off)
Like me motherfucker you’ve been at it for too long.
While you feed off all those insecurities, you stand in front of me and bite the hand that feeds.

Self righteousness is wearing thin (lies inside your head, your best friend)
I’ll bleed but not for fellow man (broken glass, you’ll fade reflection)

Telling them it’s all for something real
Don’t respect the words your speaking
Gone too far

So, how does it feel to know that someone’s kid in the heart of America has blood on their hands fighting to defend your rights so you can maintain the lifestyle that insults his family’s existence
Well where I'm from we have a special salute waved high in the air towards all those pompous assholes who spend their days pointing fingers.

Fuck you...

(Shh, quiet, you might piss somebody off)
Like the heartbeat of this country when antagonized too long
I’ll be damned if you count me in as part of your generous hypocrisy; collected and amazed.

Tabloid gossip we roll as real (There’s no need for us to bury you)
Selfish agenda, once again (right this way, you dug your own grave)

Telling them it’s all for something real
Don’t respect the words your speaking
Gone too far

All the way from the east to the west we got this high society looking down on their very foundation.

In addition, I think the parts that the Rev sings (whatever it is he actually says, we'll have to wait for the official lyrics to be sure) are referring to the two-sided politicians who use the Iraq War to push their agenda, whatever it might be. I think its directed at both Democrats and Conservatives.

Upon more listening I think this is what the Rev is saying:

Telling them it’s all for something real
Don’t recite the words your speaking
You've gone too far, Acclaim

Okay, this song isn't pro-Bush, but it's DEFINITELY anti-Democrat, specifically Democrats in Congress. Let me use a few lines to prove this:

"While you feed off all those insecurities" refers to how Democrats took advantage of Americans tired of the Iraq War to get into power and to stay there.

"Telling them it’s all for something real
Don’t respect the words your speaking
Gone too far" refers to how Democrats originally supported the war, as MANY of them voted for it, and "don't respect the words you're speaking" refers to how they now pretend they never supported the war in the first place......alterandabolish said this phrase was anti-Bush, but it fits in to a single theme this way

"So, how does it feel to know that someone’s kid in the heart of America has blood on their hands fighting to defend your rights so you can maintain the lifestyle that insults his family’s existence" is directed at Democrats and others who have called our troops murderers or accused them of torture, etc.

"Well where I'm from we have a special salute waved high in the air towards all those pompous assholes who spend their days pointing fingers" refers to Democrats and others who have just pointed fingers without coming up with a solution.

"Selfish agenda, once again" again refers to Democrats really opposing the war for political gain.

"All the way from the east to the west we got this high society looking down on their very foundation.
Constantly reminding us that our actions are the cause of all their problems.
Pointing their fingers in every direction.
Blaming their own nation for who wins elections.
They never contributed a fucking thing to the country they love to criticize." This widens the lens a little bit and I think criticizes Hollywood and talk show hosts, etc., who have plenty of blame to pass around, but this is all they're contributing: blame.

Like people have noted before, A7X have friends in the military, and this song is lashing out at those who aren't doing anything to help their situation and who, in some cases, are essentially attacking the troops. It's about time somebody pointed out how Democrats and others are just pointing fingers, just want power, and don't have a solution. This song isn't supporting one side or the other, it's just lashing out at those who only criticize and don't have solutions, which has mostly been Democrats in this case. These guys were my favorite band before I even heard this song, but hearing the lyrics in this song made me love them even more. Thank you Avenged Sevenfold for saying what so badly needed to be said!

schectertempest and scootman1990 definately nailed it. Thanks to both of you for posting great opinions. It's songs like this and M.I.A. that really make me respect A7X as more than a band. It seems like everybody is accusing our soldiers of murder and noone supports the country. Im starting to think that i'm the only one anymore that really cares about our country and troops. To hear A7X come out with such a powerful song it really raises my respect for them and the US military. So i salute A7X, the military, and anyone who agrees with me.

I'm not too crazy about this song. I'm not saying it sucks or anything. I'm not really into the red state southern metal concept, even tho i believe their from Cali, maybe I'm wrong. But this is how this song sounds to me. They kinda lost their punk groove that they had in the past. And lyrically I can't really groove to the lyrics because they don't make sense to me, he's dissing protesters but then gloryfying himself for not being afraid to piss people off. Making his word some sort of gospel. I understand how their trying to support soldiers and their country and that's awesome and all but this song they sound like a bunch of frickin' nazis. I like how their older songs like blinded in chains were when they saw both sides, even though they were republican. But hey thats, just me who knows maybe this song will grow on me.

One last thought (possibly) from me. I think the: "Shh, quiet, you might piss somebody off" has a dual meaning in the song.

The first is the more obvious meaning that all the people complaining and whining about the war and America and don't take any action should STFU.

The second meaning is that what they are singing is going to piss people off because of the message it has, but the fact that M. Shadows goes on with the song shows that they could care less if people are offended by it.

I don't agree that it's anti-Democrat at all. Feeding off of insecurities? Isn't that what the Republicans did right after 9/11 with the Homeland Security Act and the "War on Terror" that led us into Iraq (not Afganistan, despite Osama being there). Biting the hand that feeds? We elected Bush, and he turned around and screwed us over. Telling them all it's for something real? WMDs, anyone? Still looking long after Saddam is cold in the ground and Osama is chilling in a cave somewhere.

Eh... this song isn't anti-Democratic or anti-Bush. I think it is really talking about the politics in America. Everyone is blaming everything for their problems, like gays, immigration, this war in Iraq, and our FOX-NEWS-endorsed future war with Iran. It doesn't help when the US citizens sit around and accept EVERYTHING we're told. I would quote every lyric and explain it but I don't feel like wasting my time for kids who won't get it.

::Shh, quiet, you might piss somebody off::

People have problems and they sit on their asses and do nothing about it. They keep quiet. So that lyric above is like saying, "You shouldn't speak up because you might piss someone off and you don't want that do you?"

::Excuse the obscene
Ignore the untrue[...]::

Instead of accepting the obscene and believing the untrue, ignore it. I won't be able to explain this clearly. I know a lot of people don't know what is happening in the world today and they believe all the shit they hear on TV. The folks running for the future President of the USA are also spewing shit and people just buy into it without question. They just flow with the system.

::(Tabloid gossip, we want less real)::

We just want gossip news. We don't care what is real. As long as it is entertaining right?

You know what. I shouldn't even bother posting this. Keep thinking it is about Bush. Whatever floats your boats.

Yeah, I pretty much agree with alterandabolish’s and bugoff’s interpretations of the lyrics.

I'm not too crazy about the lyrics, but the musically and vocally I love it! I'm so happy that the Rev is singing on this song. He has such an amazing voice!

Also, concerning the lyrics:
I think "you’ll fade reflection" should be "your fake reflection."
