Lyrics for Jesse as interpreted by thea.therese

Jesse Lyrics
I love a boy named Jesse
But Jesse doesn't love me back
He says he has a girl in Chelsea he wants so much

I love a boy named Jesse
But Jesse doesn't love me back
He says he's insecure about what he feels and what he wants

What he feels and what he wants...

But every time he smiles at me
I know we are the same
And that he'll change his world for me
If he just knew my name

There's no need for you to say you saw the life they chose for me
For me...

I love a boy named Jesse
But Jesse doesn't love me back
He wants to kiss and go to bed but he doesn't want to talk
I love a boy named Jesse
But Jesse doesn't love me back

He says he's straight and all that stuff is only in my mind
Only in my mind...

All I can hide
I'm doing fine

But every time he smiles at me i know we are the same
And that'll he'll he change his world for me
If he just knew my name

There's no need for you to say you saw the life they chose for me
For me...

I love a boy named Danny
But Danny doesn't love me back
He says he has a girl in Chelsea he wants so much

I love a boy named Danny
But Danny doesn't love me back
He says he's insecure about what he feels and what he wants

What he feels and what he wants...

one i think ferom watchign the video that he says
He says he's straight and all that stuff is only in my mind
Only in my mind...

makes much more sense and sounds more like it than

He says his faith and all that stuff is only in my mind
Only in my mind...

that makes no sense...what I want to know is why he starts singing about Danny at the end..

All I came up with was that he was addressing the song to all the men out there who are gay and are living a lie as a straight man.

okay, i think this is just about him falling in love with boys who are either straight/confused. he first loved jesse, and he was confused or insecure about what people would say so he never took a chance with him, and then he gets over jesse, and falls for danny, who has the same insecurities as jesse

I'm a little sad that not many people have commented on this song. It's so heartrending. I have been in the same situation a few times myself.

Anyway, I think JossMoss and LaurenLush said it already, but it's about falling in love with someone who is confused, and refuses to admit their sexuality.

I don't think it's about just simply liking someone who actually is straight, because he says, "He wants to kiss and go to bed but he doesn't want to talk." So Jesse is obviously into him physically, but I think he's saying that Jesse refuses to date him or acknowledge their relationship as anything more than physical.

I'm not sure about the part with Danny. It could be [like LaurenLush said] that he got over Jesse and started liking Danny, but ended up in the same situation. I don't really have a better explanation.

Oh also! I don't understand the part that goes, "There's no need for you to say you saw the life they chose for me." So if anyone's got anything to offer up as an analysis of that, I'd love it.

There's a mistake in the lyrics. It's not "a girl named Chelsea." It's "a girl in Chelsea," like the neighborhood in New York and London.

I think most of the comments so far are wrong. He is NOT in love with a straight guy. Jesse is in the closet. The most important line in the song is:
"But every time he smiles at me
I know we are the same."

And when the woman's voice comes in, it talks about "the life they chose for me." It's about how society pressures gay people to pretend they're straight and the tragedy of a gay guy loving a guy he can't have because the guy is in the closet.

I've thought about this song some more and I think I understand why he switches to the name Danny at the end. It ties together with the refrain, where he says "if he just knew my name." My theory is that the boy who's in love with "Jesse" doesn't actually know his name. Later, he learns his real name, Danny, and begins to use that.

Does no one else think the ending about "Danny" is sung from the other guys point of view? There is a different sound to those lines.

I feel the song deals with the confusion of falling in love with someone who is struggling with their identity.

I think that maybe when he talks about Danny is the other saying, maybe the both don't know that the other is feeling the same.
or is not that.lol

beautiful song about a boy falling for another boy...
i think that the part where he says "if he just knew my name" means he doesnt really know him, and he doesnt want to really know him, cuz than hell have to admit he is gay.
and when it switches to danny i think that like Lauren that he got over jesse and now hes falling for danny, who has the same problem just liek jesse... when he repeats "he sais he has a girl in chelsea he wants so much" it shows how the things repeat themselves and he gets hurt again and again :(

I wondered if the change to Danny might symbolise the way in which we torture ourselves in love by loving people who don't love us, or loving the same kind of people even if it didn't work last time. It might also suggest like has been suggested before, the way in which we love someone but then we can move on.
