Lyrics for An Ocean Between Us as interpreted by kingh44

An Ocean Between Us Lyrics
GO!

how many years have we waited
for a ship that never set sail?
and how many days have we wasted
chasing a love that was not our own?
i sat ashore and watched
as one hopeless wave crashed upon another
while my thoughts ran to the highest hills
my heart never reached the sea
with only delusions of an endless journey
i am left with an ocean between you and me

(an ocean, between!)

is this your salvation?
is this all you can give?
i will not stand in reflection
of someone else’s dream

the gate to my heart has been weld shut
with the splendor of my aspirations closed in
how many years have we waited
for a ship that never set sail?
and how many days (how many days) have we wasted (have we wasted)
chasing a love that was not our own?

(is this your salvation?)

is this your salvation?
is this all you can give?
i will not stand in reflection
of someone else’s dream
(repeat)

how many days have we waited for a ship that never, never set sail (x2)

is this your salvation?
is this all you can give?
i will not stand in reflection
of someone else’s dream
(repeat)

Er---- it's very difficult to find ŕ meaning in this song...
I really like the chorus, wonderful voice.

We can think about God, because the singer use the word "salvation", but except that I don't find the whole fact... Is he talking about his waiting of Jesus?

Or about the days he does some sins?
maybe i will stand in relflection of his lyrics right now...

I'm not Christian myself but I respect the fact that they send a message that isn't meant to be thrown down peoples throats, but can be seen and interpreted by many points of view as seen throughout the new album. The CD is absolutely amazing, very brutal, very intense just as hard if not harder than previous albums and definitely not disappointing. "Departed" is the best guitar tapping, hammer-on, pull-off session I EVER heard imho.

i think this song is about how he and the band feels about how there goals and the goals of other bands/people differ. Its about what really matters in life. He feels like there is an ocean between him and the other people /bands in terms of meaning and purpose.

i like walnuts1 view on it, actually i think that is pretty spot on, i was listening to it thinking perhaps it was talking about how he was an ocean between sin, and perhaps he wouldn't stand in the dream of sin, but walnuts1 interpretation is much better haha.

I interpret this song as someone realizing they've been waiting and waiting for something to happen and finally deciding that this isn't what they are supposed to be doing and deciding to move on.

I think it applies more to your life purpose in general but it is interesting to think about in terms of a relationship:

"how many years have we waited
for a ship that never set sail?
and how many days have we wasted
chasing a love that was not our own?"

"how many years have we waited
for a ship that never set sail?
and how many days have we wasted
chasing a love that was not our own?"
-------- Pursuing the relationship.

"i sat ashore and watched
as one hopeless wave crashed upon another
while my thoughts ran to the highest hills
my heart never reached the sea
with only delusions of an endless journey"
--------- Nothing happens.

"i am left with an ocean between you and me"
------ There is still a distance between them.

"is this your salvation?
is this all you can give?"
------ Is friendship as much as you can give me?

"i will not stand in reflection
of someone else’s dream"
------ Being with you was my dream, but I need to let go because that dream belongs to someone else.

Erf... why does a friend give you the salvation?!

Salvation is given by God!
I think that AILD, with these sentences
"is this your salvation?
is this all you can give?"
They wonder about what is doing 'em different of the other bands.
The salvation they received, what God give'em, it's these things that give a reason to their lifes and make a difference (so big for a difference) between 'em and the others.

They preach the message of God, so they won't stay on a reflexion about the illusions of anyone else, but they'll live the christian truth, their truth.

i think that they are talking about like ....

when they say ...

"how many years have we waited
for a ship that never set sail?
and how many days have we wasted
chasing a love that was not our own?"

like false hopes and dreams that people put into idols and money and material things that will never satisfy you once you pass. being Christians and knowing one of the band members personally, i know they are sad to see how people are so caught up in the false things that this world can never give us like God will give us.

and when it says ...

"is this your salvation ?"

they are saying ... is this world really what you think is going to save you and make you a happy person.

i dont want to get to deep into it , but those are some of my thoughts :)

The PianoMinstrel has it correct.

This song is about a guy loving a girl but not having his love reciprocated, so after waiting around for her, he decides that it is a love that will never be, so he must give it up.

What this means to me, is the fact that I loved a girl very much, and well, I have waited for her love and its obviously not coming back...and I have to move on, no matter how hard it can be...

KICKASS SONG!!! KICKASS BAND!!!
i think the song is about a girl that he loves but she doesn't have any feelings back & he now knows that she will never feel the same so he has to let her go. i know AILD are a christian band & most of their songs are about god but they are men & men do have relationships with woman & men do suffer heartache :(

For me, the lyrics are not about a relationship, but rather it deals with something of a much larger scope.

"how many years have we waited
for a ship that never set sail?
and how many days have we wasted
chasing a love that was not our own?
i sat ashore and watched
as one hopeless wave crashed upon another
while my thoughts ran to the highest hills
my heart never reached the sea
with only delusions of an endless journey
i am left with an ocean between you and me"

To me, this verse is about pursuing a lifestyle and chasing after a goal that is determined by the expectations and desires of OTHER people, as opposed to yourself. The imagery of a person waiting for a ship to arrive and come save him serves as a metaphor for waiting for someone else to save you, instead of taking fate into your own hands.

"the gate to my heart has been weld shut
with the splendor of my aspirations closed in
how many years have we waited
for a ship that never set sail?
and how many days (how many days) have we wasted (have we wasted)
chasing a love that was not our own?"

In the second verse, the person most likely doesn't want to, or can't pursue his goals. And he regrets the time he has wasted in trying to live up to other people's expectations and be the person they want him to be.

"is this your salvation?
is this all you can give?
i will not stand in reflection
of someone else’s dream"

The chorus is basically about the person's dissatisfaction with pursuing the lifestyle other people want him to pursue, and his wanting to break free of those ties.

This is a very beautiful song, and quite possibly my favorite on the entire album. :D. Great stuff.

this song is about a relationship.the ship that never set sail=the relationship that never happened.the hopeless waves=all the times he/she tried but failed.the ocean between them just represents there differences.one loves the other person wile the other person can't decide if he/she wants to commit. The one person is sick of waiting and has to realize, let go and move on

Are you guys Christians in a band or a Christian band?
I'm not sure what the difference is between five Christians playing in a band and a Christian band. If you truly believe something, then it should affect every area of your life. All five of us are Christians. I believe that change should start with me first, and as a result, our lyrics do not come across very "preachy." Many of our songs are about life, struggles, mistakes, relationships and other issues that don't fit entirely in the spiritual category. However, all of these topics are written about through my perspective as a christian.

Straight from their website. So you guys can stop saying it's about a relationship. I hate when people thing every song is about a relationship.

"Straight from their website. So you guys can stop saying it's about a relationship. I hate when people think every song is about a relationship."

Any chance you had of making that opinion stand was crushed when you decided to quote that specific paragraph from their FAQ. In particular "Many of our songs are about life, struggles, mistakes, RELATIONSHIPS and other issues that don't fit entirely in the spiritual category." So sucks to be you Eddy :>

I myself think this song's about a relationship that could never be.

Our relationship with God, of you Boyfriend/Girlfied, Unrequited crush, Parents, Boss whatever . . it's can be any relationship that has broken bonds/ties because of both partys' differences involved in the dispute . .a clash of opinions/feelings/personality/perceptions . .
Good song, the album is going to make me go deaf . . I'm starting to hear white noise or that ring you get in your ear to let you know you're going deaf very soon . . -.-" sigh . . I can't give up my metal fests =/.

in my opinion this is a much more internal and personal song. i like to think of it as more as the relationship between the things we value and admire about ourselves and the things we hate and want to change. I think the entire opening verse expresses being done with all the parts you hate as you separate yourself from those things. and as it goes into the chorus, it is a very athoritative feeling of the better parts of yourself overcoming and developing their own dream. the line "is this your salvation?", i interpret that as part of the internal dialogue asking whether or not by overcoming your weaknesses, will the pain and struggles really be over?

For me the song seems to be about maybe pursuing something that you think means alot to you at first, but
maybe after thinking about it more in depth, you learn that it's really something that you don't want.

"And how many days have we wasted
Chasing a love that was not our own?"

"While my thoughts ran to the highest hills
My heart never reached the sea
With only delusions of an endless journey"

Sort of signifies how he couldnt realize it at first, that everything he had was put into something
that really wasn't worth the time or effort made for it.

"I will not stand in reflection
of someone else’s dream"

The chorus shows then the realization that he won't do it anymore, that he won't live for something
that he doesnt believe in.

"The gate to my heart has been weld shut
With the splendor of my aspirations closed in"

Saying that now that so much effort has been put in, he doesn't know if he wants to try at anything else maybe? That he doesn't really know what he wants after all maybe...and he doesnt want to throw everything he has at another thing he isnt sure about.

Finally I think that the title of the song could be the change between how he was before and how he is now...the difference is like an "ocean between the two", signifying how much he has really changed.

A long comment for a completely amazing song and amazing band

Tim Lambesis says this every time he's asked what the lyrics mean.

It's about the difference between what we want to make of our lives, and what other people expect us to want to make of our lives. Not everyone wants to grow up and be a millionaire. Once you hear it the lyrics make perfect sense.

I agree with both the relationship and the goal interpretation.

As I Lay Dying lyrics always bewilder me, I always have to have song meanings to explain it. Hahha.

I think, that if yr going to think about it in terms of a relationship..it's about two people having an affair and the singer wants her to leave her other man, but she never will. Throughout the song he is talking about chasing a love that isn't his, and how he needs to stop.
