Lyrics for The Pretender as interpreted by intothegrinder2

The Pretender Lyrics
Keep you in the dark
You know they all pretend
Keep you in the dark
And so it all began

Send in your skeletons
Sing as their bones come marching in...again
They need you buried deep
The secrets that you keep are at the ready
Are you ready?
I'm finished making sense
Done pleading ignorance
That whole...defense

Spinning infinity, boy
The wheel is spinning me
It's never-ending, never-ending
Same old story

What if I say I'm not like the others?
What if I say I'm not just another one of your plays
You're the pretender
What if I say I will never surrender?

What if I say I'm not like the others?
What if I say I'm not just another one of your plays
You're the pretender
What if I say that I'll never surrender?

In time our soul untold
I'm just another soul for sale... oh, well
The page is out of print
We are not permanent
We're temporary, temporary
Same old story

What if I say I'm not like the others?
What if I say I'm not just another one of your plays
You're the pretender
What if I say that I'll never surrender?

What if I say I'm not like the others?
What if I say I'm not just another one of your plays
You're the pretender
What if I say I will never surrender?

I'm the voice inside your head
You refuse to hear
I'm the face that you have to face
Mirrored in your stare
I'm what's left, I'm what's right
I'm the enemy
I'm the hand that will take you down
Bring you to your knees

So who are you?
Yeah, who are you?
Yeah, who are you?
Yeah, who are you?

Keep you in the dark
You know they all pretend

What if I say I'm not like the others?
What if I say I'm not just another one of your plays
You're the pretender
What if I say that I'll never surrender?

What if I say I'm not like the others?
What if I say I'm not just another one of your plays
You're the pretender
What if I say that I'll never surrender?

What if I say I'm not like the others?
(Keep you in the dark)
What if I say I'm not just another one of your plays
(You know they all... pretend)
You're the pretender
What if I say I will never surrender?

What if I say I'm not like the others?
(Keep you in the dark)
What if I say I'm not just another one of your plays
(You know they all... pretend)
You're the pretender
What if I say I will never surrender?

So who are you?
Yeah, who are you?
Yeah, who are you?

I think this song is about a couple and he wants her to know that he is not pretending to be someone and he truly entends to make this work not because of what he can gain from it but because he truly cares for her. He says he will never surrender and he will continue to convince her and claim she needs to figure out herself before she accuses someone because she just might be pretending to be somenoe.

I'm guessing this song was written as an open letter to the President.

"I'm the voice inside your head
You refuse to hear"

This speaks to the state of denial that the President has been living in about the war.

"What if I say I'm not like the others?
What if I say I'm not just another one of your plays?
You're the pretender"

This also speaks to the dissent that people have been voicing over the past 4 or five years, and that they've been beaten back time and time again because of it.

"I'm what's left
I'm what's right
I'm the enemy
I'm the hand that took you down"

I'm what's left-liberals
I'm what's right-conservatives
I'm the enemy-anyone who doesn't agree with the President's doctrince/rules/policies
I'm the hand that took you down/Brought you to your knees-these two lines may refer to the 2006 election, where the Democrats retook both houses of Congress, and literally brought the President to his knees.

I think this song or at least the chorus is about being pegged as someone you're not then not only proving them wrong, you then call them out on what they are.

Can't wait to hear the rest of Echoes

Great. Nay, it's *fucking* great. Excuse my French, but it was needed to emphasise just how incredible this song is.

I think... could be way off, but I think maybe he's in love with a girl, and he's telling he's the one for her, even though she keeps going for other guys.

Or that all these other guys say they're in love with her, but they're not. When he says it - he's not pretending. And he's not giving up. Good man!

Dave and the Foo Fighters never cease to amaze me with their musical brilliance. Everythign from their strange chords chord structures, to their vocal harmonies, to their lyrics. Fantastic, brilliant, powerful. "The Pretender" is all these things and more. I'm sure the entire album will have that same flare.

Amazing song, kills the last few singles by a longshot in my opinion. Sounds like it's directed toward the President to me, also.

It seems like the song is about a powerful, and snobby person, and his conciousness is talking to him, and it's telling him he should stop bieng such a big ass slob and that he should treat people with much more respect,

In aspect;
Send in your skeletons
Sing as their bones come marching in, again
The need you buried deep
The secrets that you keep are ever-ready
Are you ready?
I'm finished making sense
Done bleeding ignorance at your defense
Spinning and (?) it deeper
The wheel is spinning me
It's never-ending, never-ending
Same old story

It means he has been more than one person before a poor man, bastard, etc. He keeps ignoring the fact that he was once one of those he despises.

Also;
What if I say I'm not like the others?
What if I say I'm not just another one of your plays?
You're the pretender
What if I say I will never surrender?
What if I say I'm not like the others?
What if I say I'm not just another one of your plays?
You're the pretender
What if I say I will never surrender

His servant is expressing the fact that he hates the person of autthority, and he is challenging him.

In terms;I'm the voice inside your head
You refuse to hear
I'm the face that you have to face
Mirrored in your stare
I'm what's left
I'm what's right
I'm the enemy
I'm the hand that took you down
Bring you to your knees
means I used to be your best and I followed you up until this point and now I've become your only living friend until this point.

And in the final words he is adressing that the person of higher authority has no right to judge or put other to the test, because not only was he one of them he speak down upon himsel when he speaks of lower class people like that , explaining the "WHO ARE YOU?" part

In my opinion this song is about someone who was picked on.. and after a few years the person looks back to the past and the hard times and realises that he is stronger than ever and ready to look into the bullys eyes and say "Yeah who are you? What if i say i will never surrender"
Maybe you'll get my point if you read the lyrics.

i never thought of foo fighters lyrics having too much in terms of hidden meanings or agendas. And so its kinda hard for me to jump on the political idea. Instead this song just gives off a slightly angry tone to all those that are fake to themselves and those around them.

All those who wear a mask daily, and who keep secrets.("Skeletons" in their closets.) It seems he has grown tired of this giant farce and instead of buckling and giving into it all, he has decided to double his efforts internally and remain true to himself, and to call out the rest of the worlds BS.

oh David Grohl,
i want the new album soon.
this song's amazing.

instead of the whole "couple" interpretation up there, i think it's more against the President, too. or maybe not even the President but...just...it doesn't sound like a couple-breakingup sorta thing.

oh well.

P+L.

Well, I hate politics.. so even if many people interpret is as something political.. EK! Haha, I find a meaning that is.. I'm horrible with words.. it's like someone challenges who he is, and he is standing his ground and saying he will never give in and surrender (to whatever you can relate to). I think one of the things he refuses is to be like everyone else in the typical 'guy' way. He's telling a girl, no matter how much she might put a stamp on his head that he's just like everyone else, he says he doesn't care what she thinks. Who is she to say who he is? He believes he can give more than that. I like to think of it without the relationhip ties, though. As in, someone is challenging you for who you are and what you stand for and you get up off the ground, state your purpose and hold your own. As in, someone is finally questioning you and you have enough sense of self and security to stand up and prove yourself.
Beautiful. And MOVING.

I think FooFighter0234 is close with his (her?) explanation. I think this song is about the state of our country in general. I think this song is speaking from the point of view of a person who will not tolerate the kind of mindlessness the American people and the American government are exhibiting right now.

"I'm the voice inside your head
You refuse to hear"

"Keep you in the dark
You know they all pretend"

"Done bleeding ignorance
in your defense"

I think it's partially about how naive we've been, and also partially how stupid our government has been. It's kind of a "we're sick of this bullshit" sorta song. Aimed a lot at the government and the establishment. If you watch the music video it makes sense, there's a line of police/soldier-type figures armed with masks and suits with numbers, in the end the red backdrop explodes onto them. It's pretty damn sweet if you ask me.
