Lyrics for How Far We've Come as interpreted by scarecrowlyrics

How Far We've Come Lyrics
I'm waking up at the start of the end of the world,
but it's feeling just like every other morning before
Now I wonder what my life is going to mean if it's gone

The cars are moving, like, a half a mile an hour and I
started staring at the passengers who're waving goodbye
Can you tell me what was ever really special about me all this time

But I believe the world is burning to the ground
Oh well, I guess we're gonna find out
Let's see how far we've come
Let's see how far we've come

Well I believe it all is coming to an end
Oh well, I guess we're gonna pretend
Let's see how far we've come
Let's see how far we've come

I think it turned ten o' clock, but I don't really know
Then I can't remember caring for an hour or so
Started crying and I couldn't stop myself
I started running, but there's nowhere to run to

I sat down on the street and took a look at myself,
said, "Where you going, man? You know the world is headed for Hell
Say your goodbyes if you've got someone you can say goodbye to"

I believe the world is burning to the ground
Oh well, I guess we're gonna find out
Let's see how far we've come
Let's see how far we've come

Well I believe it all is coming to an end
Oh well, I guess we're gonna pretend
Let's see how far we've come
Let's see how far we've come

It's gone, gone, baby, it's all gone
There is no one on the corner and there's no one at home
It was cool, cool, it was just all cool
Now it's over for me and it's over for you

Well, it's gone, gone, baby, it's all gone
There is no one on the corner and there's no one at home
Well, it was cool, cool, it was just all cool
Now it's over for me and it's over for you

But I believe the world is burning to the ground
Oh well, I guess we're gonna find out
Let's see how far we've come
Let's see how far we've come

Well I believe it all is coming to an end
Oh well, I guess we're gonna pretend
Let's see how far we've come
Let's see how far we've come

Let's see how far we've come
Let's see how far we've come
Let's see how far we've come
Let's see how far we've come
Let's see how far we've come
Let's see how far we've come
Let's see how far we've come

Its about looking at your life and seeing everything you have done....having this feeling like everything is crashing down....u can also see it as the POV of a relationship, reaching to a point were is certain that its almost over and thinking abot your time with that person and how its going to be now....that person is your world and now is burning to the ground. Awesome song....can't wait for the new cd!!!

I love this song! I'm just so glad they're making new music. I definitely agree with ieatworld, and the song meaning could be formed to anyone's situation.

i think this song is one of those that will mean something different to every person.

I think it is about a guy who suddenly realizes that life ends, and he's thinking about everything he's done over his lifetime. whether or not he's happy about it is something else.

It reminds me to always look back at what i did with my life and see what it took to get here.

These lyrics are all wrong.
Here are the right ones:

I'm waking up at the start of the end of the world,
but it's feeling just like every other morning before.
Now I wonder what my life is going to mean if it's gone.
The cars are moving, like, a half a mile an hour and I
started staring at the passengers who're waving goodbye.
Can you tell me what was ever really special about me all this time?
But I believe the world is burning to the ground.
Oh well, I guess we're gonna find out.
Let's see how far we've come.
Let's see how far we've come.
Well I believe it all is coming to an end.
Oh well, I guess we're gonna pretend.
Let's see how far we've come.
Let's see how far we've come.
I think it turned ten o' clock, but I don't really know.
Then I can't remember caring for an hour or so.
Started crying and I couldn't stop myself.

Let's see how far we've come.
It's gone, gone, baby, it's all gone.

Omg. doesn't have a thing to do with 'global warming'. End of the world, yes. 'Global warming', clearly not. The world is burning to the ground, it's all coming to an end, world is headed for hell... sounds like Rob Thomas has some Christianity in his background.

i think it could have something to do with global warming. i think it has to do with everything that we've done/accomplished/etc. as humanity. sure maybe if you take it to the most literal extent the lyrics go to it's mostly to do with christianity, but since when are lyrics all literal? i think he could be talking about doomsday, global warming, or even his own path as an individual...this song is versatile. and songs are meant for you to get your own meaning out of them, and understand what the artist meant, although most of the time the two go together.

It's pretty much just a story of the end of the world. In the first verse he's searching what he can do. He's wondering what all this even means.

By the second verse he starts freaking out. Then he just stops, collects himself and decides there is nothing he can do to stop it so he realizes that all he has left to do is look back at everything he has accomplished.

to me, i think this song is about a person closing a chapter in their life and openning the next unsure on what it holds. my grade is using this as our entrance song for our farewell mass, as our world that we know is ending.

"But I believe the world is burning to the ground.
Oh well, I guess we're gonna find out.
Let's see how far we've come."

well that what we think it means to us

In my opinion, it's about his view of the end of the world, and how he has reached a point of complacency in which he doesn't really care that everything is ending. This attitude is because he's calm and relaxed. When I examine his word usage, it suggests to me that there's no frustration. He would rather just sit back and look at all the things that have passed, perhaps because there is nothing he can do about the end. It might not even be too far to suggest that he thinks we should all just think about the good instead of looking at how the end is approaching (maybe because it might not be).

If you've seen the music video, it opens up a new dimension to the song in some ways. It chronicles many big events in history. I think Rob is making the point that things are not going well right now (Iraq, corruption, healthcare, the state of the Middle East, global warming, etc...) and that we, not only as Americans, but as people have to rise up against these issues. The song is somewhat cynical, but at the same time, optimistic that we can do good.

There are a lot of good examples of how we've come together and done great things in the video; landing on the moon, tearing down the Berlin wall, Live Aide, Live Earth, minorities as front runners for Pres...

We are at a major turning point in American history with many challenges to face. Let's see how far we really have come as people and see what we can do together. That's what we've always done as Americans.

I'm so glad Matchbox Twenty is coming out with new stuff.... I missed them so much! And this song is great. The words are literal, but can be interpreted in so many different ways.... which is pretty much like all their songs. It means something different to everyone, which is exactly their style. Gotta love it

I think it's about a girl who led him on until he was in love with her, and then she blew him off. She left him and it hurt him so bad that it seemed like the end of the world.

This is the theme song to my life right now. I agree whole-heartedly with everyone who said that this song can be interpreted any number of ways, but, from the first time I heard it, I had always interpreted it the way denton just did...as I just went through that myself. It's written in such a way that I think everyone interprets it in the way most fitting their own situation at the time.

Thank you real atm, glad I'm not the only one who sees this. I definitely see Christian themes in this, at least as far as the world is going down.

Look at lines from the chorus:
"But I believe the world is burning to the ground."
The world is sinful, sin leads to destruction. Doom is coming to the world, either from God or (more probably) the world will destroy itself without divine help.

"Oh well, I guess we're gonna find out."
Most people don't believe in true Christianity, and probably most people who are reading are thinking I'm crazy. I guess we'll find out in the end.

"Well I believe it all is coming to an end."
Just like I said earlier, the world is crashing, and has been ever since the Fall in the Garden.

"Oh well, I guess we're gonna pretend."
Most people are in denial about these facts or don't think about religion. Everyone knows they are going to die someday, but they pretend they won't.

The "Let's see how far we've come" refers to people saying how we're such an advanced civilization. How we've come so far from "primitive times." We'll see.

I think you guys are all reading way too much into this song. The "end of the world" isn't really the Apocolypse in this song, I don't think. It's really nothing more than something coming to an end, and that something is determined by whoever listens to the song and whatever they want it to be. You could liken it to the actual end of the world, I suppose...but I don't think it's supposed to be that.

You reflect on your life, and you ask yourself if you're happy with what you've done. Then you realize you're not, and you want to do something, but you're not sure what. You start running away, but you realize that there's nowhere for you to go, and you feel trapped inside your own life. You feel worthless, and you wonder if you can ever make it out.

Excellent song. I freakin' love Matchbox Twenty.

I definately think this song is more about the state of affairs in the world right now, or more specifically America, infact mainly America. I think they're trying to say that yes we have a HELL of alot of bad stuff going on right now, with the global warming, Iraq, 3rd world country problems (that have always been there) but step back and take a look, you now have a black man and a woman running for presidency with a damn good chance of getting it, that's a massive step forward for humankind, to have removed racism n sexism to that extent.
