So this has been.my favorite song of OTEP's since it came out in 2004, and I always thought it was a song about a child's narrative of suffering in an abusive Christian home. But now that I am revisiting the lyrics, I am seeing something totally new.
This song could be gospel of John but from the perspective of Jesus.
Jesus was NOT having a good time up to and during the crucifixion. Everyone in the known world at the time looked to him with fear, admiration or disgust and he was constantly being asked questions. He spoke in "verses, prophesies and curses". He had made an enemy of the state, and believed the world was increasingly wicked and fallen from grace, or that he was in the "mouth of madness".
The spine of atlas is the structure that allows the titan to hold the world up. Jesus challenged the state and in doing so became a celebrated resistance figure. It also made him public enemy #1.
All of this happened simply because he was doing his thing, not because of any agenda he had or strategy.
And then he gets scourged (storm of thorns)
There are some plot holes here but I think it's an interesting interpretation.
Marry me, John, marry me, John
I'll be so good to you
You won't realize I'm gone
Marry me, John, marry me, John
I'll be so sweet to you
You won't realize I'm gone
You won't realize I'm gone
Many people wanna make money, make love
Make friends, make peace with death
But most mainly wanna win the game
They came to win, they want to come out ahead
But you, you're a rock with a heart
Like a socket I can plug into at will
And will you guess when I come around next?
I hope your open sign is blinking still
So marry me, John, marry me, John
I'll be so good to you
You won't realize I'm gone
Marry me, John, marry me, John
I'll be so good to you
You won't realize I'm gone
You won't realize I've gone
As for me, I would have to agree
I'm as fickle as a paper doll
Being kicked by the wind
When I touch down again
I'll be in someone else's arms
Oh, John, come on
We'll do what married people do
Oh, John (I don't care)
Come on (what you are)
Let's do what Mary and Joseph did (I want to marry you)
Without the kid (I want to marry you)
So marry me, John, marry me, John
I'll be so good to you
You won't realize I've gone
Marry me, John, marry me, John
I'll be so good to you
You won't realize I've gone
You won't realize I've gone
You won't realize I've gone
You won't realize I've gone
You won't realize I've gone
You won't realize I've gone
Many people wanna make money, make love (marry me, John)
Make friends, make peace with death (marry me, John)
Many people wanna make money, make love (marry me, John)
Make friends, make peace with death (marry me, John)
Many people wanna make money, make love (marry me, John)

"As for me, I have to agree I'm as fickle as a paper doll being kicked by the wind When I touch down again I'll be in someone else's arms"
The crux of the song.
It's very cynical view of Christianity, she's saying Mary and Joseph had sex. Which they did, as Jesus has brothers and sisters in the Bible. I love pointing out the ridiculousness of the religious who don't even know their own religion.
A holy fool is still a fool.
I just don't see how anyone reading the lyrics above think it's romantic or about a sexless relationship. You'll be telling me that U2 "One" is a lovely song next.
It's a very clever twist on men asking naive women to marry them just to get in their pants.
