Lyrics for Marry Me as interpreted by mistercrinkles

Marry Me Lyrics
Marry me, John
Marry me, John I'll be so good to you
You won't realize I'm gone

Marry me, John
Marry me, John I'll be so sweet to you
You won't realize I'm gone
You won't realize I'm gone

Many people wanna make money, make love
Make friends, make peace with death
But most mainly want to win the game they came to win
They want to come out ahead
But you you're a rock with a heart like a socket I can plug into at will
And will you guess when I come around next?
I hope your open sign is blinking still

So marry me, John
Marry me, John I'll be so good to you
You won't realize I'm gone
You won't realize I'm gone

As for me, I have to agree
I'm as fickle as a paper doll being kicked by the wind
When I touch down again I'll be in someone else's arms

Oh John, come on
We'll do what married people do
Oh John, come on
(I don't care
what you want
I want to
Marry you)
We'll do what Mary and Joseph did
Without the kid

So marry me, John
Marry me, John
I'll be so good to you
You won't realize I'm gone
You won't realize I'm gone

The Jesus reference is so clever... I really do adore this song.

I am probably in love with this song. *points to username* Yep ^.^ This song is so lovely, since it's so straight forward but really conveys the feeling perfectly.
PS-I didn't get how risque this song was until I listened to it a couple of times..."let's do what married people do", "...without the kid" (!) Call me naive, but I totally didn't get the *ahem* sexual reference until a couple of listens. So yeah, I'm a loser.

There's a secondary chorus underneath the "Oh, John c'mon" lyrics:

I don't care
what you want
I want to
Marry you

Amanda Palmer of the Dresden Dolls did a cover, though I've only heard the live version. It's awesome though, and it'll be on her new album, coming out March-ish, "Who Killed Amanda Palmer?"

"Marry Me" is such a lovely song.

Thanks a lot to WhereIsJF? for the info. I am really looking forward to that album!

I interpret this song to be about the fantasies I have about John Green and I. I shall never interfere with his relationship with the yeti, however, so they will remain fantasies.

Wow, this song is a rare breed. The thing that stands out to me is that this is exactly on the line between a happy love song and lonesome ballad. Everything from her voice down to the muted horns could go either way depending on how you feel.

Which Arrested Development episode is this in reference to?

I read the lyrics to say, "Marry me John, I'll be so sweet to you (that) you won't realize I'm gone." John can marry her, and she'll act in such a way that he's ignorant to her absence.
Everyone I've read talking about this in reviews, etc., seems to only get the sexual innuendo from the Mary and Joseph lines. What did Mary and Joseph do without the kid? They led banal, plebian existences without any particular significance.
I find it interesting that she says that John is a rock. If we keep in mind the biblical reference to Mary and Joseph, it's curious that John is the rock here. Biblically-speaking, Peter was the rock that church was built upon. But John is the rock in this song. There's a sort of revision going on here.
Anyhow, I think this song is deeply ironic.

I wanted to add that, before Mary gave birth to "the kid," she was a virgin, which means they'll lead not just a life without any significance, but one without sex as well.

I think this is a song from the point of view of someone who wants marriage for marriage's sake; the ritual is given more importance than the relationship.

This song is not about Arrested Development. Annie Clark said that the name of the album (which is also the name of this song) was chosen partially as a genuine plea and partially as a reference to her favorite show, Arrested Development (how Maybee says "Marry me!" to get out of situations that could get her in trouble, particularly when she acquires her producer job).

I really love this song. I actually first heard it covered by Amanda Palmer, who I adore. I like the original more, but Amanda's cover is really worth a listen: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9uPtt3lC590. But, sorry WhereisJF?, it's not going to be on her solo album. There's only one cover on it, and, actually, St. Vincent sings on that track with Amanda. If you're interested in the track list: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Who_Killed_Amanda_Palmer

This song, while the title sounds happy, I think there's a sad element to it. The line "You won't realize I'm gone" says something about the narrator. She'll marry the guy but she'll lose a lot of herself in the process of that. When she says the lines, "Many people wanna make money, make love..." she is explaining how in a way she's marrying the guy to fit in with her peers because those are typical things to do in life. People aren't always getting married out of love, some of the time they're doing it because it's just the next step in the process of growing up, also because marriage is portayed as something happy and can solve your problems. Truthfully that isn't always the case. The narrator is trying to be accepted by society's standards so she is marrying John whether or not she loves him or really is ready to go in that direction.

Really cynical critique of the institution of marriage from someone looking to use it (and her intended spouse) purely as a tool for stability to advance other appetites. She wants a sexless (Mary & Joseph w/o the kid) marriage to a stable, yet emotionally easy-to-manipulate man (a rock with a heart like a socket I can plug into at will) so that she can be taken care of and comfortable until something that tickles her fancy comes along ( I'm as fickle as a paper doll...I'll be in someone else's arms). Pretty ruthless when you consider that she KNOWS she's going to leave him before they marry (marry me, you won't realize I'm gone), that she knows she's manipulating him (I don't care what you want, I want to marry you), AND that she even considers that she can potentially do this to him multiple times in the future when she's between affairs ( "And will you guess when I come around next? I hope your open sign is blinking still").

The really depressing thing about the whole song is that the implication by the singer is that her approach to marriage is really not any different than anyone else's. "most mainly want to win the game they came to win. They want to come out ahead" and "we'll do what married people do".

to me the "marry me john, you won't realize i'm gone" is sending the message that married couples, or people who stay in long-term relationships, begin to gradually "forget" each other. they stop noticing each other, both partners fade into the daily scenery for each other's eyes. and perhaps the being "gone" isn't being actually physically gone, but rather, essentially "invisible" to the person you are with.

I always thought this was about unrequited love. "You won't realize I'm gone" means John know she exists, ie - she could die and he'd never know it. Her voice sounds full of longing, but also sadness and loneliness.

i can't exactly speak for her,
but i don't think the mary and joseph part is about a life without sex.
i'm an atheist, and i read this as a sarcastic lyric.
