Lyrics for The Wolves (Act I and II) as interpreted by J.Diddy

The Wolves (Act I and II) Lyrics
Someday my pain, someday my pain
Will mark you
Harness your blame, harness your blame
And walk through

With the wild wolves around you
In the morning, I'll call you
Send it farther on

Solace my game, solace my game
It stars you
Swing wide your crane, swing wide your crane
And run me through

And the story's all over you
In the morning i'll call you
Can't you find a clue when your eyes are all painted Sinatra blue

What might have been lost -
Don't bother me

the percussion at the end of this song is great. Completly random and out of time but perfect none the less

adding onto duke_mike the persussion at the end of the song is brilliant. The crescendo of it towards the end of the songs strengthens it.

in the percussion bit, I always hear it as a train going by...
"what might have been lost", as actually leaving

To me - this song is about a relationship gone sour. And while one person is in mourning the other is moving on....the disconnect between them is made most obvious at the end, when on person is saying "what might have been lost" as in we have given up on a great thing! and the other person says "don't bother me" because they want to move on!

Going back to the beginning though:

The person in mourning is conflicted with feelings of sadness and resentment of what they feel and want the other person to feel it too. "someday my pain will mark you." Almost like saying to them "you may not feel the loss of me now but you will....you'll miss me too. "

And while the other one might already be moving on leaving the other alone to mourn, the mourner promises to be there for them when (IF) they ever come back "With the wolves around you, In the morning, I'll call you."

The next stanza is so brilliant: "Solace my game," anyone who's been through a break-up knows you must act cheerful on the outside while the other person is hurting you so much "swing your crane, and run me through."

this song chills me. he's managed to capture the inside turmoil that many of us have experienced when things "just don't work out."

I have to say, runghollow, that I love your interpretation of the percussions as a train; and, to lyriclover81, your interpretation of the song is impeccable.

The video shows and more importantly lets you hear the sparks of the fire in a winter landscape, and more percussion comes from chopping wood and chansaws.
The doggedness of the video reflects the enforced busyness that follows an emotional upheaval. He's still doing what needs to be done regardless of how hollowed out he feels.
The regret is being beaten like a panel by a drunk.
Amazingly cinematic even without the video.

What does that mean?

I think it's supposed to be "painted so natural blue" using an oxymoron

all of these interpretations are just spot on. lyriclover, yours in particular, is just what i saw the song as. when i originally heard this song, the final lyrics "what might have been lost" and "don't bother me," i thought of him saying that what might have been lost from the relationship no longer bother's him, don't being used in an incorrect grammatical way (like what was lost don't bother me at all). but now that i hear you say the words are lines spoken by the two feuding ex's, it makes me second-guess my original assumption. i was just curious what other people's initial reactions were.

to me, the percussion at the end sounds like running- and that just fits in perfectly with the song. someone's obviously leaving.

I'd like to know what the line about sinatra blue means, too. I don't get it.

Frank Sinatra was known for his blue eyes ("Ol' Blue Eyes").

yes, it is definitely Sinatra Blue.
This song always chills me, especially seeing it live here. It is so moving, the audience participation moving in softly to shouting (encouraged by Mr. Vernon) just makes it all the more powerful

it's probably right that Sinatra is referring to Frank Sinatra's famous blue eyes like Conchobar said.

i think he's saying here that she knows everything that's happened between them, so why are her perfect eyes so blind to how he's now feeling... why doesn't she understand/'know' him, and why can't she see that he's hurting..

'Swing wide your crane
And run me through'
..any interpretations?

I always thought this song was about him finding solace at the end of a relationship. 'Harness your blame' is exactly what Justin has done in making this album, and what so many others artists do with their art. He has taken his pain and focused it on making a really intimate record. In the last lines 'what might have been lost' it's as if he saying 'what if this didn't happen?' Would he have had the poetic resources to make the record.

The other interpretations seem to be right. This is what I took from the song however wrong I might be.

I just heard this song live at Bonnaroo and it was beyond incredible. By the end the entire crowd was screaming "what mightve been lost" and the percussion in the background was so fitting. truly an amazing song.
