Lyrics for Take Me to the Riot as interpreted by thatmorningpoured

Take Me to the Riot Lyrics
Grey skies and light fading
Headlamps making patterns on the wall
Uptown it’s dead now but
Out here no one seems to care at all

Slick girls and sick boys and
Each one lining up to take him home
They hold tight, their coin and
They pray no one has to see them fall

I’m there yeah, I serve them
The one with the empty looking eyes
Come closer, you’ll see me
The face that is used to telling lies

Saturday nights in neon lights
Sunday in the cell
Pills enough to make me feel ill
Cash enough to make me well

Take me, take me to the riot
Take me, take me to the riot
Take me, take me to the riot
Take me, take me to the riot
Take me

You sprung me, I’m grateful
I love when you tell me not to speak
I owe you, but I know you
You’ll have me back but it’s gonna take a week

What now kid? Which way love?
Will we ever make up and be friends
Good news is, my shoes is
Lined with all my nickels and my tens

Let’s do that, just feed me
I hate when I have to get to sleep
You despise me and I love you
It’s not much but it’s just enough to keep

Saturday nights in neon lights
Sunday in the cell
Pills enough to make me feel ill
Cash enough to make me well

Take me, take me to the riot
Take me, take me to the riot
Take me, take me to the riot
Take me, take me to the riot

And let me stay
And let me stay
Let me stay, let me
Let me stay

I'm absolutely in love with this song. Though I'm hearing the lyrics a bit different and would like to propose some corrections.

First verse:
"Uptown it’s dead now but
Out here no one seems to care at all"

Second verse:
"Slick girls and sick boys
And each one lining up to take him home"

Chorus:
"Saturday night in neon lights
Sunday in the cell
Pills enough to make me feel ill
Cash enough to make me well"

Fifth verse:
"Good news is my shoes is
Lined with all nickels and my tens"

I agree. I think it's about a prostitute that falls in love with one of her customers that sees her as nothing more than...well, a prostitute.

I know there might be some prostitute type references..but..

"I owe you, but I know you
You’ll have me back but it’s gonna take a week
What now kid? Which way love?
Will we ever make up and be friends"

To me that is about being with or hanging out with an ex-lover, and not knowing if you'll grow closer, or if you'll just go apart.

And in a similar vain, "take me to the riot", means, lets just go out and have fun.

I think it's probably about a prostitute.
Or at least someone who party's to hard and then sleeps around.

"Saturday nights in neon lights
Sunday in the cell
Pills enough to make me feel ill
Cash enough to make me well"

The first line just is partying and then on Sunday you pay for what you did. Either in your guilt/shame or in a prostitute's case, get caught and go to jail.
The next lines make me think that they have a drug problem and the only thing that is good is the cash. I'm not sure how the cash line would fit in if the song wasnt about a prostitute.
So that makes me lean more to the prostitute thought, rather than just some partier.

in the video for it (its on their myspace) its about like a new kid coming to the city for the first time and everything is super new...so i'd assume it must have at least SOMETHING to do with that...

Maybe it means that a relationship was recently broken, or something valuable to him was lost and "take me to the riot" may mean that whatever he lost was a mess, but hed rather have the mess than what hes been left with.
then at the end it says "and let me stay" meaning he doesnt want a temporary thing, he wants it to last.
Someone mentioned the music video in which a boy is new in the city. so maybe he misses what he had back where he came from, or maybe since hes in the city and everythings so new, he doesnt hold back, and takes advantage of all the things in the city; drugs being one of them "pills enough to make me feel ill"
then he realizes that you can have anything you want in the city as long as you have money. Maybe thats where the prostitute comes in, but im still not sure that theyre refering to that.

Saturday nights in neon lighs
Sunday in the cell
this could mean that he parties hard on saturday, and suffers on sunday with the hangover from whatever it was that he took the night before.

im tires so thats all i got for now, ill add onto it later.

this might be naive but i was thinking it was along the lines of living the rock star life and doing the wrong thing with it...but loving the adrenaline rush after all. but there is definitely a connection with a relationship with someone else....although there isn't always a direct link between the video and song, something about a kid who's not used to the hustle and bustle of the city makes sense too.

I am fairly certain that this song is about a drug dealer, after watching the music video.
the verse:
"Slick girls and sick boys and
Each one lining up to take him home
They hold tight, their coin and
They pray no one has to see them fall"
Im pretty sure is reference to people lining up to get some drugs. If it was about prostitution, there probably would not be the uses of the words Boys and Girls. I think the meaning of the Boys and Girls is to emphasize the fact that the youth are on drugs.
The drug dealer theory also makes sense of the phrase "They pray no one has to see them fall"

the next verse:
"Saturday nights in neon lights
Sunday in the cell
Pills enough to make me feel ill
Cash enough to make me well"

Makes perfect sense if he is a drug dealer, most likely E, with the reference to the neon lights and the pills enough to make me feel ill, cash enough to make me well.
but with this, i still dont understand the take me to the riot.
Any other oppinions on this?

nickels and tens? nickel bag... dime bag...? i would say they're definitely alluding to drug use/dealing.

i noticed some problems with the lyrics. I have recently purchased the CD.

The lines are
Each one lining up to take IT home
AND NOT
Each one lining up to take HIM home

as well as
Let’s do THEM, just feed me
NOT
Let's do that, just feed me.

Thought i'd let you know. that also supports the drug theory.

i deffinitely think its about drug dealers. if it helps at all, i found this on youtube as a comment to the video: I heard Torq and Amy on XM yesterday... Torq says it's about two drug dealers in love with each other, but one of them has their shit together a little bit more than the other.

.....but ofcourse it's not exactly a reliable source.

I'm not to sure about what it means, And I'm not getting the prostiute/drug dealng themes you guys are going on about.

The only way to interprit it as that it's kinda like "take me away, i don't care what happens as long as i have a good time", Maybe because they are depressed or what, And want to do something they could regret, maybe the same theme as "Waiting for the 7.18" By Bloc Party or "You Held The World in your Arms" as Idlewild as it says about not having regrets, like I said just thinking "Fuck it, i'm going out, having fun, I might die but I don't care".

This just confused me more, But nice video I spose... Minus the performance bits.

Read all the lyrics. It makes more sense as being about a prostitute. I can see why people might think this would be about a drug dealer but if you read all the lyrics you can see why some lines fit better as being in the prospective of a prostitute.
And come on people, not every song is about drugs! This is about something a little more sensitive. A prostitute that is really looking for love and a real life but is trapped by her profession and like most prostitutes, an addiction to drugs. That part is about drugs, but most of the song is about escapism. Take me to the riot, take me away, she is looking for someone to come help her. You can tell that in the lyrics after the first chorus.
Either way though the main meaning of the song is about escapism. That much can be easily decided. It's not all about drugs though! Why is that always misread in songs!

I love this song to pieces.

The prostitute idea kind of crossed my mind, but more so I saw the drug dealer side; I totally pictured someone (the one portrayed as a drug dealer/prostitute) who really loves their party-crazy lifestyle, but is in a relationship with someone much more straight-laced who is picking them up from a rough situation, prison, something along those lines.

i think this song is about a prostitute on drugs and her significant other or ex is bailing her out of jail.

"they hold tight their coin" could refer to the phonecall one gets after being picked up by the police..when the rescuer arrives she is still pumped for more partying.. take me to the riot..(rave/club whatever)

awesome song

Take me the riot, in my opinion means take me to where everything happens; drinking and promiscuity.

It is about drugs and partying.

The first three stanzas are about getting the drugs.

The "riot" is being on the drugs. The cell is the next after the party.

I like to think that last three stanzas are about a person who may be in a relationship with somebody that revolves around partying and drugs. I only say that because I have been there and can relate and this song really reminds me of that relationship.

But really, that just makes the point that a songs interpretation can really depend on your own history. Everyone naturally draws on their own experiences. This is what i get out of it.

And to confirm what Milan! said:

The lines are
Each one lining up to take IT home
AND NOT
Each one lining up to take HIM home

as well as
Let’s do THEM, just feed me
NOT
Let's do that, just feed me.

" ‘Take Me to the Riot’ is about two drug dealers who are completely fucked up on crack, but they’re in love. At the end of the day, they have each other." - Amy Millan

This song reminds me of the Decemberists song "One the bus mall". It's about how people on the streets have no one else but each other, whether it be drug addicts or prostitutes.

I love how Stars could make a chillingly romantic song about addicts.

Absolutely amazing.

Okay.
I can see where the prostitute thing comes in.
But I think it's about drugs use.
E.g; "each one lining up to take it home"
"praying no one has to see them fall"
"Saturday nights in neon lights" - Hallucinations, perhaps.
"Sunday in the cell" - either getting busted or being drug-f**ked. Also could be paranoia or schizophrenia as an adverse effect of drugs.
"Take me to the riot" - 'Riot' could mean being high...
When it says "and let me stay" makes me think that the person is unhappy and wants to stay high so that they don't have to worry about their problems.
"You sprung me, I'm grateful", their partner finding out about their habit, and they feel kind of relieved, so they don't have to keep the secret.

So yeah.
There was some more but that will do.
That felt like a school assignment.
But actually interesting.
