Lyrics for Personal as interpreted by reflectlight

Personal Lyrics
Wanted: single F
Under 33
Must enjoy the sun
Must enjoy the sea
Sought by single M
Mrs. Destiny
Send photo to address
Is it you and me?

Reply to single M:
My name is Caroline
Cell phone number here
Call if you have the time
28 and bored
Grieving over loss
Sorry to be heavy
But heavy is the cost
Heavy is the cost

Reply to Caroline:
Thanks so much for response
These things can be scary
Not always what you want
How about a drink?
This ancient club at noon
I'll phone you first I guess
I hope I see you soon

I never got your name
I assume you're 33
Your voice, it sounded kind
I hope that you like me
When you see my face
I hope that you don't laugh
I'm not a film star beauty
I'll send a photograph
I hope that you don't laugh

Note to single M:
Why did you not show up?
I waited for an hour
I finally gave up
I thought once that I saw you
I thought that you saw me
I guess we'll never meet now
It wasn't meant to be
It wasn't mean to be
I was sure you saw me
But it wasn't meant to be

Wanted: single F
Under 33
Must enjoy the sun
Must enjoy the sea
Sought by single M
Nothing too heavy

Undoubtedly one of the saddest, most devastating songs I've ever heard. I don't disrespect the body-weight angle, but I think it's more universal than that.

The guy's a jerk. Possibly, though, he can be excused. A woman hurt him before, because some guy hurt her before. I think this one's all about that chain of harm and distrust, and how it tears up what might have been something spectacular.

Do you think that he didn't show because of appearances, or because of his own baggage?

i think he left because of his own personal baggage as well as her appearence.although wieght is a definite possibility i think its more about ugliness. cuz it said"when you see my face
i hope that you don't laugh
i'm not a film star beauty
i'll send a photograph
i hope that you don't laugh" shes talking about her face not her body.

and when she says"sorry to be heavy but heavy is the cost."
i thnk it might mean her heavy and sad, PERSONAL,baggage.

and notice he changes mrs destiny to nothing too heavy..he changed his mind about having anything to serious when it comes to relationships.

i think he "left" bacause of personal baggage and most likely her appearences. although the wieght thing could be a possibilty i think its more about ugliness. because..
when you see my face
i hope that you don't laugh
i'm not a film star beauty
i'll send a photograph
i hope that you don't laugh...
...shes talking about her face not her body.

and when she says"sorry to be heavy but heavy is the cost."i think shes talking about her heavy and sad, PERSONAL baggage.not her fatness. i think thats too literal and kind of dumb to put it that way.

notice that he changes from mrs destiny to nothing too heavy.he probably said that because he changed his mind about dealing with anybody to serious.

then again..

I don't think it's anything about her physical weight. He says "NOTHING too heavy" not "NO ONE". He's referring to the obvious emotional baggage she was carrying.

i think that this song is fantastic. the transformation of the man is remarkable for such a simple song.
in the beginning, he sings "is it you and me?" hopeful that perhaps he will find someone to complete himself... but as the song continues, he sings "is it you or me?" questioning himself about why things didnt work out. Questioning whether it was a problem within himself or a problem outside of himself. However when the continuation of the Ad he clearly has made a choice to not see that the true problem could be within himself.

I don't think it's really (except as double meaning) about physical weight. And I don't think it was her "weight" (emotional baggage) that scared him off when they were supposed to meet. It was his own. When he rewrites the personal ad, he says "nothing too heavy" he's referring to a future meeting/relationship, as in he's not looking for anything too deep.. he's afraid.. a bit lost.. It's a chilling, beautiful song.

p.s. she sends a photograph and he still showed up to meet her. It can't be about her having an ugly face, then. Sounds like his cold feet is due more to his issues than hers.

I l o v e this song i just heard it on someones myspace profile song i was like OMG i need this song so i downloaded it on itunes and looked the lyrics up online. I came here because i was slightly confussed about the whole "is it you or me" thing but thanks to all of you its cleared up a little bit. i must say to all of you though stop fighting! it doesnt matter what the weight thing is if it has to do with it or not maybe it does maybe it doesnt nobody knows for sure unless they are stars. i think that its left for interpertation, i think the whole song is simple enough that you can kind of use your imagination to creat your own little story. its a daydreamers ( like myself) dream come true! i personaly think that he did show up, saw she was ugly although initialy thuoght she would be prettier than her photo and left when he found out she wasnt. those are just my thought but i deff love this song, it envoked some big emotions inside of me that i didnt think a song could.

pretty much what .kissme_imcontagious. said.

and also, i think it demonstrates the on-going cycle of relationships. the guy says he's with the girl, "i hope i see you soon" leads her on kinda? the fact that he said he hopes to see her soon gives the girl so much more hope for the relationship to work out. most of the time girls over analyze things, and little words like that can mean so much. when the girls sings "i never got your name" her voice is urgent, fast paced, obviously excited, eager, and then when she sings "why did you not show up" her voice shows so much emotion. i turned the song up loud, and i could hear her voice shaking.

therefore, girls over-analyze, boys lead on

I'm voting for heavy emotionally for the following reason:

"grieving over loss
sorry to be heavy
but heavy is the cost"

If we connect the dots between these 3 continuous lines, we can infer that she is saying heavy is the cost of her loss that is currently weighing upon her.

I can't say whether the man ever went to meet the woman, but I think that's purposely left for you to speculate as the lyrics do not provide a definite answer.

I really like how the piano in the background changes tempo and octaves between the two singers.

I also don't think heavy means her weight. I also don't thinks she's ugly or he didn't show up because he saw her picture. I think that explanation would be a little too simple.

I think this whole song is about the single male. He doesn't want a "heavy" relationship. He's out there looking for more of a fling or something short term because he's very broken from relationships and all he can manage are short term relationships. He's looking for girls he can debase and who aren't worth much because he isn't worth much himself.

Then he meets Caroline, but after viewing her picture, he knows this isn't the type of girl he was looking for. This is the type of girl he could've fallen in love with years ago, but can't now because he's so jaded. The intimacy scared him and he never shows up. He does this so he could save her from himself.

He gives up at the end and puts up the ad again hoping to find something not as heavy.

is it possible there's significance in the difference of 'is it you AND me' at the beginnign vs 'is it you OR me' at the end? idk what it could be though.. just pointing it out

i like what choisek said tho, nice nice

fat perhaps, can't discount that..

I think that its more about the guy being too scared to approach her? He did go to the place, but lost the nerve at the very end? Perhaps he has done this before too.

The laast couple of lines is it you or me, they start getting all mixed up and chaotic, as if hes thinking in his mind is it the woman, or is it me too scared to approach...

i think the reason he changed "Sought by single M
Mrs. Destiny" to "Sought by single M
Nothing too heavy" was because destiny brought him caroline and he clearly didnt follow through with her, so it was destiny that they werent supposed to be together.

also the "is it you OR me?" question....i think the reason it didnt work out was not the fault of one but both because of their own PERSONAL issues... hers being upset about the loss she had and her not being very comfortable with her looks. and his being his frustrations with finding the right one... and after this time didnt work (my guess is that hes had that expierence many times before) he gave up and wanted to find something simpler which explains the "nothing too heavy"

but anywho, i love this song :)
it keeps you wanting more...

Take another look at the title of the song. "Personal"

Carolyne got way too personal from the get go. In her first three lines, she gives two important information, and then already talks about a lost. Later she starts asking for his his information and maybe it was just too much for him. He already admits that "These things can be scary".

I don't think it would have made a difference if carolyne was actually attractive.

wow...I really love this song...it makes me so sad. It's one of the few songs that make me want to cry just because i feel so sad for the characters, I want to know if she ever finds the love of her life, I wanna give her a hug!!!

I dont think it is about weight, although that was the first thing that came to mind.. Now having analyzed it, I do believe it to be along the lines of heartbreak.. Caroline is heartbroken by an ex, so she is trying to find company in a want ad.. She replies to the man with grieving over loss, sorry to be heavy, but heavy is the cost.. Heavy is the cost meaning that her feelings are heavy over her heartbreak..

The song leaves you guessing, It could mean an array of things.. I do think it means heartbreak though..

I'd like to add that I LOVE the instrumental part between Carolyne's consecutive verses. The time it takes is as if there's a whole chuck of story that elapsed. And the emotional tune is a perfect perfect atmosphere of what happened.

Firstly, what an absolutely beautiful and completely tragic song. The more I listen to it the more brilliant it becomes; the build up between single m and Caroline, the introduction of her nervousness and eagerness about the date to overcome her loss, single m's disregard to her loss by ignoring it and simply mentioning how the personal column can "be scary", the final verse that lulls you in and and then delivers the line that pushes the whole story down the cliff: "nothing to heavy". And to finish off, the ambiguous "is it you, or me?". For such a simple song, it's incredible how deep it goes; just incredible.

Of all people here, I think Pocketmoonlight above has got the closest to the meaning of this song, although there's one small thing that I disagree with him and most of what has been written here: single m DEFINITELY went to the "St. Jude club at noon" (note: not the 'Ancient club' as on the lyrics page ;). It's one of the things that are central to the song. He went there, full of doubt and fear, and saw Caroline there. For a moment they made eye contact, before single m decided that he couldn't go though with it and left. That moment is the beauty of the song; that both their futures came down to one single moment that was decided by their pasts, and both are left wondering would could have been: "is it you, or me?".

And I'm in the non-fat camp. As far as I'm concerned, Caroline could have been the most beautiful girl on the planet, and single m still wouldn't have stayed. It goes a lot deeper than simply appearances - Caroline may have been the one who admitted to being "heavy", but for single m, his past experiences have had an even heavier cost.
