Personal Lyrics
Wanted: single F
Under 33
Must enjoy the sun
Must enjoy the sea
Sought by single M
Mrs. Destiny
Send photo to address
Is it you and me?

Reply to single M:
My name is Caroline
Cell phone number here
Call if you have the time
28 and bored
Grieving over loss
Sorry to be heavy
But heavy is the cost
Heavy is the cost

Reply to Caroline:
Thanks so much for response
These things can be scary
Not always what you want
How about a drink?
This ancient club at noon
I'll phone you first I guess
I hope I see you soon

I never got your name
I assume you're 33
Your voice, it sounded kind
I hope that you like me
When you see my face
I hope that you don't laugh
I'm not a film star beauty
I'll send a photograph
I hope that you don't laugh

Note to single M:
Why did you not show up?
I waited for an hour
I finally gave up
I thought once that I saw you
I thought that you saw me
I guess we'll never meet now
It wasn't meant to be
It wasn't mean to be
I was sure you saw me
But it wasn't meant to be

Wanted: single F
Under 33
Must enjoy the sun
Must enjoy the sea
Sought by single M
Nothing too heavy

Meaning of this song really needs no explanation. It's very straight forward and that is why I like it.

Nice song.

This song is just perfect. Stars has the ability to make everything they write poetic and I love how they can take personal ads and do that. Just amazing.

i love how 'single m' just carries on looking for another 'single f' and forgetting the previous one just like that.

its just all too harsh, especially when he added "nothing too heavy" at the end

Now about that "nothing too heavy"...
Maybe this is obvious, but i think it has a double meaning. The first is that it relates to the beginning when she says "sorry to be heavy, but heavy is the cost". The guy doesn't want someone with that much emotional baggage (she's grieving) so in the new ad he says so. The second meaning to "nothing too heavy" is that when she sends him the picture, he sees that she is overweight and so he doesn't show up because of it and hence the addition to the new ad. maybe thats too literal? just my take on it.

I don't think it has anything to do with weight! Haha! That would be terribly depressing!
I think it's just emotional baggage, really.
If he didn't want someone overweight, he'd just be straight forward and say "sup, no fattiezzzz!!1 kthx"
Hehe! Lovely song! ;]

this is a really powerful song, because the meaning is so clear. and her beautiful voice is perfect for the part...so heavy and pained. magical.

Most of the meaning is straightforward and the bit about "nothing to heavy" has already been mentioned. The only thing I wanted to add was the final "is it you or me" bit? The guy reposted the ad and I think this part is an unsaid part the woman is interpreting in his voice. She is reading the ad and wondering if the reason he stood her up was because he was an asshole or if it was something wrong with her.

I love this song, and it's definitely one of their most underappreciated.

Actually, I don't think its that far fetched to assume that the last heavy comment could be about weight. It makes since, if he walked in and saw her like she thinks, and he didn't like what he saw, weight could be a reason, it makes sense.

i heard torquil campbell in an interview, commenting on how he wanted this song to be a mix of the murder/mystery novels that he reads and the love songs that he always enjoys to write. they also commented on how the whole song sounds kind of ominous, like someone's going to get murdered. I agree, it's kind of spooky, but a great song.

about the "is it you or me" line...

in my opinion, I don't think that it's so much a reflection of the woman's thoughts as j2los suggested, especially since Torquil is singing the line. it seemed to me to be his question to himself as he ponders why he couldn't go through with the initial date. maybe he's wondering if, instead of it being some fault on the woman's part (either emotional or physical), it could be some weakness on his part. and since he hinted at some previous experience with these sorts of things in the third verse ("these things can be heavy..."), maybe this isn't the first time this has happened to him.

I think the line brings a hidden emotional depth to the male character in the song, in subtle way that Stars often do. and it's a great contrast between the woman and the man - while she puts herself and her emotions completely out there, he has hidden them all away.

orrr, maybe he's just an asshole. great song anyway.

i agree with sleeptonight. i would like to believe that he didn't even show up. It wasn't because of a fault of hers, it was a flaw of his.

she believes that he was there and left because of her imperfections but in all actuality he didn't show up at all because of his apprehension.

after she sent him a picture of her, he didn't like what he saw so he never showed up. Or it could be that he showed up but she didn't look anything like the one in picture so he left.

"i was sure you saw me
but it wasn't meant to be"

notice that that was just music for awhile after she sent him her picture. that could be a hint that he never replied back to her after he saw the picture. at the end, he was looking for another date and now he changed the age up to 33 and added "nothing too heavy"...maybe she was heavy.

"Is it you and me?" At the beginning, the man has hope that he'll find someone and be happy. But by the end of the song, when he asks "Is it you or me?", he's asking why the last date didn't turn out.
I think pretty much everyone who has given their opinion so far is correct. The woman is probably overweight, and self conscious about her phsyical flaws. She thinks it was her fault. The man has deeper emotional problems ("nothing to heavy"...) and there is a good chance that it was his fault that their attempt failed as well.
This question finishes the song, and the listener is left to wonder which character is to blame, but there is no answer.

I'd guess that this song applies to most ppl's lives, in whatever relationship problems they are having. It is personal (like the title), and the terms "you" and "me" kind of make you put it in your own situation. :) I'm a fan.

Alright, I haven't read all this other shit yet, but I wanted to put in my 2c first.

I don't think it has ANYTHING to do with being fat...definitely with what somebody said earlier, about emotional baggage. That being said, I don't know why he didn't show up, maybe he did and just saw it in her eyes? But I don't think they'd write about that in the song, it's the Stars for goodness sake. That'd be pretty tasteless, albeit realistic. I mean after all, they did write "One More Night"...lol.

first off, lol @ "If he didn't want someone overweight, he'd just be straight forward and say "sup, no fattiezzzz!!1 kthx"

And for myself i'm gonna go with agreeing with this:

"i agree with sleeptonight. i would like to believe that he didn't even show up. It wasn't because of a fault of hers, it was a flaw of his.

she believes that he was there and left because of her imperfections but in all actuality he didn't show up at all because of his apprehension."

Maybe in his time between the letters he thought more and more about her saying she's [emotionally] heavy, and how he pry had a prior experience dealing with such things like someone said before, and decided he didn't want to go through something like that again.

Yes, I think in the last stanza the man makes it very clear he wants a casual or non-serious relationship when he writes: "nothing too heavy." Honestly, who is more heavy when Torq sings "Is it you or me"? Well obviously it's not either or. It's both parties.

My advice for the man venturing into the dating scene is that he must put himself out there despite the emotional baggage and fears of getting hurt. Why bother going about it otherwise? In this aspect the woman is stronger than the man because she seemed to understand this--and brave enough to meet him in person despite her own insecurities.

You have to be willing to love to be loved. Inevitably you will gett hurt in the process. It's part of the dating game. In my eyes the man is being a coward really.

They played this on a live radio stream today, and it was pretty incredible. Torquil explained how he sang in a lower octave to show his character having a darker personality opposite to Amy's higher, more vulnerable personality as if it was someone still hurt after a breakup.

I think it definitely has to do with weight.
He replies to her AFTER she said she had emotional baggage because he didn't really care and ends it when he sees her photo.
She became heavy when she was depressed and weight gain is the cost of grieving. Notice how he doesn't talk about himself because he doesn't want a relationship. He doesn't ask much in his ad neither besides a picture because he is shallow. He then blows her off and makes another ad with "no fatties pls"

you know what's so beautiful about all of this? think about if this was you. you wouldn't know if it was him, yourself, or what caused it. and thats exactly what they wrote and the impression they gave to others. reading all of these comments sounds exactly like what the girl would say. shes confused and doesnt know if it was her or him. it's just interesting to see that on this page.
