Lyrics for Graves as interpreted by tapes-n-tapes

Graves Lyrics
Pack your ashes pack a watch
Change of clothes and a face cloth
Meet me where your mother lies
We'll dig graves on both her sides
And lay ourselves inside
A thousand suns will set and then rise

A hair tangled up in hers
Fingernails beneath the dirt
Sharing all her black and greys
And blood running through her veins
And even as we came
Our bodies are one and the same

dave says he's really proud of the lyrics for this song. i'm jealous at his ability to create such fresh and powerful images.

I love this song. I think I like the Dave monks version better than the TPC version although I love when he says rise in the TPC version.

I gave this song to my mom for her birthday (which is a wicked copout from getting a present that songwriters are entitled to). It’s really new and the arrangement will likely change before it’s on the record. I’m really proud of the lyrics though. It has another verse/bridge part to finish it off, but we haven’t arranged it yet. This is the only recorded version of this song that I like so
far.

this is my faavorite song by them.
I love how when he sings it, his voice has a rasp to it that injects emotion.
the little bell parts are nice too along with the unique drumming (like on all their songs.. Great drummer!!!).

It's very clear what the song's about though, and i like that Monks is writting about his mom but not in a 'sissy' way. I never thought of writting like that... i don't know, can't really explain it.

GAHHH!! i wish i had saw them in seattle!!!

i hear: "pack your rations, pack a watch"

"A thousand suns will set and rise"

"Our hair tangled up in hers"

"Leaving as we came"

I think the rest of the song is:

Cuz you traded me for the love song
You try, but i'll never be a gentleman
Cuz you traded me for the love song
You try, but you only ever treat the symptoms
Cuz you traded me for the love song
You try, but i'll never be a gentlemen
Cuz you traded me for the love song
You try, but you only ever treat the symptoms

I agree with everything evergettheurge said about the lyrics instead of one.

Instead of "cuz you traded me for the love song" I hear "cuz you traded me for the lump sum".

pack your rations, pack a watch
change of clothes and a face cloth
meat me where your mother lies
we'll dig graves on both her sides
and lay ourselves in side
a thousand suns will set and rise

our hair tangled up in hers
fingernails beneath the dirt
sharing all her blackened brains
our blood running through her veins
well even as we came
our bodies are one and the same

i'll try but i'll never be a gentlemen

you try, but you only ever treat the symptoms

you know it comes you know it goes.

im absolutely positive this song isnt about sex, but its the first thing that came into my head. this may sound completed daft, but so be it:
to me sex has always been about sharing the body of someone you love, and becoming one. so: "and even as we came, our bodies are one and the same," kinda sortve fits. i know its a lame explanation, but yeaah

Reading over the words, it sounds like it's about a boy trying to comfort his girlfriend over her mother's death. No matter what he does, he can't seem to make her feel any better.

For such a cute song, the imagery of the two lying in the grave with the girl's mother is quite gruesome.

I'm probably way off and I'll be the first to admit it, but I see a lot of similarities between the lyrics and Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte. [By the way, spoiler alert for the whole post for anyone who hasn't read this 150+ year old book yet.] The lyrics from the point of view of Heathcliff speaking to younger Catherine about her mother, older Catherine. I mostly think this because Heathcliff asked to be buried next to older Catherine with the adjacent sides of each of their coffins removed so that the dirt they rot into will mix.
Older Catherine also did trade him for the lump sum, Edgar Linton, the wealthier and more stable of her two suitors.
As hard as she tried, she couldn't make Heathcliff, who the family picked up off of the streets as a child, into a gentlemen and any of her efforts did last very long as he became very violent and crazy towards the end of the book.
Older Catherine also could only treat the symptoms of her own insanity but could not treat the root of the problem and quickly died early in the book.

This is my favorite TPC song. There's so much energy in it, and I just love the way each instrument sounds. Not to mention, when they play it live holllllyyyyyyy shiiiiiiiiitttttt it's so good.
