All the boys who called their mothers on that day
Were no tough bunch but they had the nerves to go and say
That all your secrets were drowned
With the pioneers who were flooded from this town
They packed their bags only moments too late
With the pounding waves crashing up against the weakened water gates
Because dire times call for dire faces
So lovely dancer, call and answer
Trade our places in the night
We're running barefoot, you and I
Dead lovers salivate
Broken hearts tessellate tonight
And all the kids who cut their knees on that old schoolyard fence
Were holding out for posterity and self-defense
We beat them down again
There's no fun in playing cowboys for pretend
We showed them what the backs of our hands is for
The divide is clear in the coming year
The rich will take the poor
Because dire times call for dire faces
So lovely dancer, call and answer
Trade our places in the night
We're running barefoot, you and I
Dead lovers salivate
Broken hearts tessellate tonight
Were no tough bunch but they had the nerves to go and say
That all your secrets were drowned
With the pioneers who were flooded from this town
They packed their bags only moments too late
With the pounding waves crashing up against the weakened water gates
Because dire times call for dire faces
So lovely dancer, call and answer
Trade our places in the night
We're running barefoot, you and I
Dead lovers salivate
Broken hearts tessellate tonight
And all the kids who cut their knees on that old schoolyard fence
Were holding out for posterity and self-defense
We beat them down again
There's no fun in playing cowboys for pretend
We showed them what the backs of our hands is for
The divide is clear in the coming year
The rich will take the poor
Because dire times call for dire faces
So lovely dancer, call and answer
Trade our places in the night
We're running barefoot, you and I
Dead lovers salivate
Broken hearts tessellate tonight

Because dire times call for dire faces- I think this means that in hard times you need someone else to be in a hard time too, with you.
So lovely dancer, call and answer- And this line refers to that too, I think 'lovely dancer' is just a term, not actually refering to a dancer, but I could be wrong.
Trade our places in the night
We're running barefoot, you and I- This, to me, is saying that both of them are in the same, kind of hurtful situation, together. This also refers back to the sticking with people in hard times.
Dead lovers salivate- I don't think this means actual dead lovers, I think it means dead relationships, even though the relationship is over they still crave each other.
Broken hearts tessellate tonight- And I think this is a symbolism for broken hearts being mended, fitting back together.
And all the kids who cut their knees on that old schoolyard fence
Were holding out for posterity and self-defense
We beat them down again
There's no fun in playing cowboys for pretend
We showed them what the backs of our hands is for
The divide is clear in the coming year
The rich will take the poor
This whole verse, I think, is about growing up. It talks about teaching kids to play' cowboys' for real, teaching the how to 'pimp slap' and teaching them that the 'rich' will always have power over the 'poor'. This is the saddest verse in my opinion, because it represents the loss of naivity and being exposed to the world, where hearts are broken and bad things happen everyday.
So, in total, I guess this song is about life, if I'm being very general. It is about hearts being broken and mended and growing up and all of that. I don't know quite how to explain it, but that's what it means to me.
Ex:
All the boys who called their mothers on that day
Were no tough bunch but they had the nerves to go and say
That all your secrets were drowned
With the pioneers who were flooded from this town
They packed their bags only moments too late
With the pounding waves crashing up against the weakened water gates
These particular lyrics seem to mean (to me anyways) that a kid is being bullied
and some of his friends have the guts to go and tell their parents (which is tough for little kids)
hence having "the nerve to go and say", "secrets being drowned" referring to the boys secret of
being bullied is now out in the open, "packing their bags moments too late," I assume refers
to parents not arriving in time to stop a fight??
the first verse, is about how everything gots messed up when people throw their opinion at the two people and its just a mess so they give up. like the pounding waves are the people and thier opinions, and the weakened water gates are the couple.
then i think the chorus is saying their broken hearts are mending tonight
dead lovers (used to be lovers) salivate- get back together tonight.
i think the second verse is talking about how their kinda saying ef you to all the people who caused the break up and its how they are showing them that they CAN make it.
so overall i feel that this song is about a couple overcoming the obstacle of everyone else being against them.
i dont care what the real meaning of this song is but to me this is what its about! lol
because its dire times since he was dumped, so he goes to a drastic place and sees a stripper. its a dire action in order to meet his needs. this explains the "lovely dancer". he wants to trade places wit her in order to not be heartbroken. he is a "dead lover" since he was dumped, but salivayes with lust. and the broken heart tessalating is his piecing together and recovering.
