I can't believe the news today
Oh, I can't close my eyes and make it go away
How long, how long must we sing this song?
How long, how long?
Tonight, we can be as one tonight
Broken bottles under children's feet
And bodies strewn across the dead end street
But I won't heed the battle call
It puts my back up
Puts my back up against the wall
Sunday, bloody Sunday
Sunday, bloody Sunday
Sunday, bloody Sunday
Sunday, bloody Sunday
And the battle's just begun
There's many lost, but tell me who has won
The trench is dug within our hearts
And mothers, children, brothers, sisters torn apart
Sunday, bloody Sunday
Sunday, bloody Sunday
How long, how long must we sing this song?
How long, how long?
And it's true we are immune
When fact is fiction and TV reality
And today the millions cry
We eat and drink while tomorrow they die, yeah
I wipe the tears from your eyes
I wipe your tears away
(Tonight, tonight)
I wipe your tears away
(Tonight, tonight)
I wipe your tears away
(Tonight, tonight)
I wipe your bloodshot eyes
(Tonight, tonight)
Sunday, bloody Sunday
Sunday, bloody Sunday
Sunday, bloody Sunday
(The real battle just begun)
Sunday, bloody Sunday
(To claim the victory Jesus won on...)
Sunday, bloody Sunday
Sunday, bloody Sunday
Oh, I can't close my eyes and make it go away
How long, how long must we sing this song?
How long, how long?
Tonight, we can be as one tonight
Broken bottles under children's feet
And bodies strewn across the dead end street
But I won't heed the battle call

Puts my back up against the wall
Sunday, bloody Sunday
Sunday, bloody Sunday
Sunday, bloody Sunday
Sunday, bloody Sunday

Sunday, bloody Sunday
How long, how long must we sing this song?

Not meaning to sound a hater or whatever, but I think that they were arrogant to cover it.
A great song choice, originally by U2.
The are 2 major events known as bloody sunday in Ireland.
The 1st happened in 1920 wen some ppl from the Irish Republican Army killed 14 english undercover agents or "spies" (not the british prime minister). Anyhow the english retaliated by going in2 a gaelic football match and opening fire on the innocent crowd!! It's believed that the british officers tossed a coin to see if the would open fire at the gaelic match or on o'connell street (the busiest street in all of Ireland!). The police kept shooting for about ninety seconds: their commander, Major Mills, later admitted that his men were "excited and got out of hand"!!!!!!. That evening the english were still firing on the streets and three men were also taken, tortured and later executed!
The second bloody sunday was in 1972 nd is the one the song is supposed to b about.
26 unarmed civil rights protesters were shot by english soldiers, 14 killed, 6 of whom were minors!!
John Duddy (17) was shot in the chest in a car park. Witnesses saw the soldier take deliberate aim at the youth as he ran!
Patrick Doherty (31) was shot from behind while attempting to crawl to safety
Bernard McGuigan (41) was shot in the back of the head when he went to help Patrick Doherty! He had been waving a white handkerchief at the soldiers to indicate his peaceful intentions!
Hugh Pious Gilmour (17) was shot in the chest as he ran from the paratroopers
Kevin McElhinney (17). Shot from behind while attempting to crawl to safety
Michael G. Kelly (17). Shot in the stomach while standing near the rubble barricade
John Pius Young (17). Shot in the head while standing at the rubble barricade
William Noel Nash (19). Shot in the chest near the barricade. Witnesses stated Nash was unarmed and going to the aid of another when killed!
Michael M. McDaid (20). Shot in the face at the barricade as he was running away from the paratroopers
James Joseph Wray (22). Wounded then shot again at close range while lying on the ground
Gerald Donaghy (17). Shot in the stomach while attempting to run to safety
Gerald (James) McKinney (34). Shot just after Gerald Donaghy. Witnesses stated that McKinney had been running behind Donaghy, and he stopped and held up his arms, shouting "Don't shoot! Don't shoot!", when he saw Donaghy fall. He was then shot in the chest
William A. McKinney (my great-uncle!) was 27 when he was shot from behind as he attempted to aid Gerald McKinney (no relation). He had left cover to try to help the older man wen he was shot!
John Johnson (59). Shot in the leg and left shoulder on William Street 15 minutes before the rest of the shooting started. Johnson was not actually on the march, but on his way to visit a friend!
SORRY kinda rambled on a bit there!!!! Jus think it's important t know what happened wen dat peaceful protest was abruptly ended!!...nd wot the song's about!
Anyhow I'm Irish nd lost a family member that day (even though I wasn't born yet) and I think paramore's version of the song is really really good! It doesn't matter that they're not Irish...hayley williams voice is pure angelic and fits in brilliantly wit the song...even made me cry a little!! I think they've done a great job...nd have helped more ppl learn wot happened!!
Sorry if I knew I'd go on this long I would have wrote a book!! Hope this shed some light on it 4 yee!!
Great song!!
i miss him
I haven't heard this cover. But I have to say, this is one song that really didn't need to be re-done.
I didn't like their cover that much, but they definitely added a new twist to something that's already pretty effing sweet.
If someone out there enjoys this version, you can hardly consider the song ruined. You never had to listen to the cover in the first place.
*sigh* Anyway, even though Paramore is one of my favorite bands I was skeptical of them covering this song well (because, c'mon, U2 in their old days were AH-MAY-ZING) but I think I love it. Damn Hayley and her prettiful voice.
