I heard this song for the first time live last night. I don't know who it was but someone came up from behind Jesse in the middle of the song and started strumming the guitar while Jesse held the chords. Amazing.

They played this song last night with mewithoutyou. I was singing along, not really noticing what the song was and realized everyone around me was just kind of standing there. I was really confused as to why I knew all of the words and none of the die hard fans did. Then, I figured out it was Neutral Milk Hotel. Haha.

I love both Brand New & Neutral Milk Hotel, but I dont think this should be under Brand New..you cant hear the over,its just the lyrics which arent by Jesse Lacey so wtf.

I am a big Jesse Lacey fan, but his cover doesn't impress me very much. Although I would love to hear Brand New play the song live.

Any song Jesse covers should be up here.
because he changes up lyrics sometimes, maybe not in this case, but he has been known to cover songs and change the lyrics slightly.
And for some reason unknown to man, he can change one word and make the song a million times more meaningful.

anyways, yeah.

as much as I LOVE jesse, he slaughtered this song :[
Neutral Milk Hotel's lead singers' vocals are so beautiful in it, and even though jesse has amazing vocals too, I think he did a terrible job covering Oh Comely

Elsa, maybe its cuz you hear NMHs version first and you grew accustomed to how his voice went with the words. I heard Jesses cover first and then I heard NMHS and it took some getting used to.

Anywho, this is a good cover on my opinion. I don't think for a cover to be good it has to sound exactly right. Jesse did a good job. I hope he sings this song when I see him :)

I think Jesse Lacey did an absolutely wonderful cover! Both Neutral Milk Hotel and Jesse Lacey take on different feelings within the song and produce spectacular results. And I'm positive that live, Jesse Lacey doing a solo cover, or Brand New doing the cover together, would be a wonderful performance. :D

Brand New cannot compete with Neutral Milk Hotel. Period. They are a fantastic band, but you really cannot compare the two.
Still, this song is beautiful. I love the original, of course, but somehow the imperfection of this cover gives me chills. That is actually one of the most appealing aspects of NMH-music that in genuine and raw. I would not trade that for anything.
