You make me lose my buttons
Oh yeah, you make me spit
I don't like my clothes anymore

We're spending time and money
Yeah, you're colder than yourself
Now we're moving, now we're taking control

You make me lose my buttons
Oh yeah, you make me spit
I don't like my clothes anymore

You put me to New Orleans
Yeah, you put me to the test
I know what my heart is for

You reach out for a blanket
I say girl you've got something
I love how you wear it

Now we're spending time and money
Yeah, you're colder than yourself
Now we're moving, now we're taking control

Love will get you down

My love's a laboratory
I set all my pets free
So baby, you should sleep with me

I make trips to the bathroom
Yeah, my friends all have true grit
I'm speckled like a leopard

Put a lid on Shirley Temple
Yeah, you make sleek kills
Yeah, you travel, you travel

You park me in your Buick
You sing songs into my lips
Well I'm speckled like a leopard
Just like a leopard

And love will get you down

I love the way you put me in the big house
I love the way you put me in the big house

If I get there early will it be the right time?
Our heaven is just waiting, so put your hand into mine
If I get too surly will you take that in stride?
Our boat is just there waiting so put that little hand in mine

And speak when you're spoken of
Catch up on your sleep girl
When you wear that body glove
You're acting on initiative
You're spelling out your love
You shouldn't be alone in there
You could be above ground

All I want is to be the very best for you
Oh yeah, all I want is to do the very best by you
Oh, this time
There'll be no life of crime
Don't rain on me tonight

Circle around me now, baby
It will be okay
'cause we all go downtown sometimes

Somehow baby, we'll beat this mess
It's the time for the surface to meet the specialist

And time away from me will get you down

I love the way you put me in the big house
I love the way you put me in the big house

If I get there early will it be the right time?
Our heaven is just waiting, so put your hand into mine
If I get too surly will you take that in stride?
Our boat is just there waiting so put that little hand in mine

And speak when you're spoken of
Catch up on your sleep
When you wear that body glove
You're acting on initiative
You're spelling out your love
You shouldn't be alone in there
You could be above ground

If you're frustrated then go
If you're frustrated then go

Honey bee, we should be through with this,
Your packaged eyes, your vicious lips
You could be young, but you're out of touch
If this love's been done, then what's your rush?

I'm a specialist in hope and I'm registered to vote
Why don't you come into my barrio we'll see if you can float
I'm a specialist in hope and I'm registered to vote
Why don't you come into my barrio we'll see if you can float

General Comment:I can't help but feel the line 'It's the time fuck the surface to meet the specialist' is actually It's the time FOR the surface to meet the specialist', which makes more sense syntactically. I must admit when I first heard it I did think he said 'fuck' but now all I hear is 'for'.

General Comment:To me, Interpol just EXUDES sex, and 'specialist' is a prime example. This song is not only my favorite song by Interpol, but my favorite song ever. I love it's dark, sexy, raw vibe with the sick bass and guitar licks. Hawt.

I personally do not believe this song has ANYTHING to do with murder or drugs like previous people have mentioned. I believe that this song is about an older, of age man in a relationship with an underage girl. From the beginning of the song you can tell that the relationship is all about sex. (You make me loose my buttons) When he says 'colder than yourself' I think he is referring to how he doesn't like her that much as a person, (at least not at first) and thinks she is emotionless. 'Now we're moving, now we're taking control' But he loves the sex, so they move right along.

'My love's a laboratory, I set all my pet's free, so baby, you should sleep with me'
    -No strings attached sex

'I make trips to the bathroom'
-Maybe that is where he is meeting her?

'Yeah, my friends all have true grit'
-His 'friends' are very persistent, for whatever reason...I'm not really sure...

'I am speckled like a leopard'
-I always took this sentence literally because Paul Bank's face is, in fact, speckled with large freckles

'Put a lid on Shirley Temple, yeah you make sleek kills, yeah you travel, you travel'
-Stop the whole 'act' of being cute and innocent, you know what you are doing, you've been around the block

Then Paul goes on to say,

'I love the way you put me in the big house'
-Since he is of age and she is underage, it is illegal and that is thrilling to him. He loves how when he is with her there is a certain danger surrounding the both.

    Then further down,

'And speak, when you're spoken of'
-She is younger, and he sometimes looks down on her for that

'Catch up on your sleep, girl, when you wear that body glove'
-I take this to mean, and this may be waaaay off, but I'm just throwing it out there, that he wants her to finally get some rest at night while she can, when its that time of the month for her.

'You're acting on initiative, you're spelling out your love, you shouldn't be alone in there, you could be above ground'
-Your declaring your love to me on your own accord, and instead of being all alone right now, you could be here with me, and we could be together

Then he goes on to reference crime 'oh this time, there'll be no life of crime' again, referencing her being underage and the danger that surrounds it.

"Circle all around me now, baby, it will be okay. Cause we all go downtown sometimes. Somehow, baby, we will beat this mess, it's the time, fuck the surface, to meet the specialist'
-He is saying that 'this is okay'. It may be wrong in some people's eyes, and may even be considered illegal, but everyone does something (for lack of a better word) bad, somtimes. So screw all the people that think our relationship is wrong, and just be with me, because I know what I am doing

'Time away form me will get you down'
-You don't like it when we are not together

    Then later on he continues,

'Honey bee, we should be through with this, your packaged eyes, your vicious lips'
-They shouldn't be in this relationship as long as they have, but he likes her so much now that he just can't get away. The sex is too good.

'You could be young, but you're out of touch, if this love's been done, then what's your rush'
-Your young, but you don't act it, you are out of touch with your youth, your innocence. If this love is over, then what is your rush to move on?

'I'm the specialist in hope, and I'm registered to vote, won't you come into my barrio, we'll see if you can float'
-I've been around, I am an expert on sex, and I am older than you, so come with me and we'll see if you can keep up.

This song is interpol at their finest. Period.

General Comment:I think this song comes from the view of a drug dealer to a client, speckled like a leopard- track marks, loves a laboratory-drug lab, big house-jail or he has a big house, i set all my pets free- get people high, if this loves been done the whats your rush?- the persons either quit or moved on to another drug

General Comment:Something about the lyrics, music, and Paul Bank's voice combined make me think of a struggle for sexual control. A lot of their songs give me that impression, but I get that vividly from this one in particular. I love this song - I can listen to it for hours on end. I typically don't analyze a song word for word, but just go with the impression it leaves me, so here goes:

I think she is hot, she knows it. She's learned to relate to the world through sex appeal. He is insecure, possibly not as wealthy as the men to which she is accustomed. Maybe they have feelings for each other, maybe not. But the sex is amazing. He wants to play the traditional male role and protect her, care for her. But she's a man's girl, and it makes him crazy. She could be a better woman if she'd just behave, but at the same time, he loves the fact that she's so sexy and everyone wants her. He is essentially lamenting a perceived loss of dominance.

To me, Paul Banks' lyrics frequently smack of sexual control issues. And I bet it would be great fun to help him work them out.

General Comment:it is about love. lose my buttons- go nutty. new orleans mardi gras put him to the test surround him by whores but he knows what his heart is for. reach out for a blanket- covering for warmth, hiding? either way he loves how she warms him or hides mysteriously. your colder than yourself- direct correlation to the blanket ppl are cruel. My loves a laboratory- he doesnt keep people they are free to go "set free". Put a lid on shirley temple- because it might spill. if i get there early- if he says it first or does it first. body glove- another correlation to the cold. doesnt it say all i want is to DO the very best of you the second time?
this time there will be no life of crime- i dont think literal crime but crimes against a lover like dishonesty. dont rain on me tonight- its pretty straight forward he doesnt want it to fuck up right then. dont we all just wanna drag it along? fuck the surface- either literally to see what they like better sexually but i think its getting deeper into her and finding what they both need "the specialist" the big house- a 4 walled cell, a feeling of isolation introversion and depression. the rest is pretty straight forward. Another way to look at it is the song is about drugs. totally can be. WORDS ARE JUST DOORS

    General Comment:Arg! Best lyrics.
I love how gloomy interpol's music is, but some how it can still give you a lift.

'honey bee, we should be through with this,
your packaged eyes, your vicious lips'

Song Meaning:I was cleaning my room and had this playing on my itunes.
I have heard ALL of this bands stuff over and over but for some reason i never paid any mind to this song???

I was so missing out. I am thinking this is actuall one of the best ones i have heard.

I think it's pretty much a song about This guy and girl who are physically attracted to each other and probably are both real selfish and vain and or scared of commitment in some way

    BUT these lyrics,
"you reach out for blanket I say girl youve got something
I love how you wear it",
    and
"I love the way you put me in thh big house" set this person apart from others.

he just isn't ready to settle down,

    "my love's a laboratory
I set all my pets free
so baby you should sleep with me"

"I make trips to the bathroom
yeah my friends all have true grit
I am speckled like a leopard"

    above all though
this song means the promiscuous behavior on his part will continue but he puts her in a category of her own
perhaps always on his "back shelf"

"I'm a specialist in hope and I'm registered to vote
Why don't you come into my barrio we'll see if you can float"

General Comment:so much of these lyrics i dont understand
packaged eyes? body glove? the big house? what even is the specialist...
something that also puzzles me is the contradicting ideas of love and shallow lust; like hes asking her to sleep with him, saying love/trust will get you down etc, then there's "all i want is to be the very best for you" and "if I get too surly, will you take that in stride" which connotes (in my opinion) a more committed love.

this has to be one of my favourite songs ever, it conveys so much feeling, even though i dont know what it means exactly :s my favourite bit is the end - im a specialist in hope, and i'm registered to vote, wont you come into my barrio we'll see if you can float.
