"Fast car" is kind of a continuation of Bruce Springsteen's "Born to Run." It has all the clawing your way to a better life, but in this case the protagonist never makes it with her love; in fact she is dragged back down by him.
There is still an amazing amount of hope and will in the lyrics; and the lyrics themselve rank and easy five. If only music was stronger it would be one of those great radio songs that you hear once a week 20 years after it was released. The imagery is almost tear-jerking ("City lights lay out before us", "Speeds so fast felt like I was drunk"), and the idea of starting from nothing and just driving and working and denigrating yourself for a chance at being just above poverty, then losing in the end is just painful and inspiring at the same time.
is it enough to have some love
small enough to slip inside a book
small enough to cover with your hand
because everyone around you wants to look
it is enough to have some love
small enough to slip inside the cracks
the pieces don't fit together so good
with all the breaking and all the gluing back
and i am still not getting what i want
i want to touch the back of your right arm
i wish you could remind me who i was
because every day I'm a little further off
but you are, my love, the astronaut
flying in the face of science
i will gladly stay an afterthought
just bring back some nice reminders
and is it getting harder to pretend
that life goes on without you in the wake
and can you see the means without the end
in the random frantic action that we take
and is it getting easy not to care
despite the many rings around your name
it isn't funny and it isn't fair
you've traveled all this way and it's the same
but you are, my love, the astronaut
flying in the face of science
i will gladly stay an afterthought
just bring back some nice reminders
and i would tell them anything to see you split the evening
but as you see i do not have an awful lot to tell
everybody's sick for something that they can find fascinating
everyone but you and even you aren't feeling well
but you are, my love, the astronaut
flying in the face of science
i will gladly stay an afterthought
just bring back some nice reminders
yes you are, my love, the astronaut
crashing in the name of science
just my luck they sent your upper half
it's a very nice reminder
it's a very nice reminder
and you may be acquainted with the night
but I have seen the darkness in the day
and you must know it is a terrifying sight
because you and i are living the same way
small enough to slip inside a book
small enough to cover with your hand
because everyone around you wants to look
it is enough to have some love
small enough to slip inside the cracks
the pieces don't fit together so good
with all the breaking and all the gluing back

The Night We Met
Lord Huron
Lord Huron
This is a hauntingly beautiful song about introspection, specifically about looking back at a relationship that started bad and ended so poorly, that the narrator wants to go back to the very beginning and tell himself to not even travel down that road. I believe that the relationship started poorly because of the lines:
"Take me back to the night we met:When the night was full of terrors: And your eyes were filled with tears: When you had not touched me yet"
So, the first night was not a great start, but the narrator pursued the relationship and eventually both overcame the rough start to fall in love with each other:
"I had all and then most of you"
Like many relationships that turn sour, it was not a quick decline, but a gradual one where the narrator and their partner fall out of love and gradually grow apart
"Some and now none of you"
Losing someone who was once everything in your world, who you could confide in, tell your secrets to, share all the most intimate parts of your life, to being strangers with that person is probably one of the most painful experiences a person can go through. So Painful, the narrator wants to go back in time and tell himself to not even pursue the relationship.
This was the perfect song for "13 Reasons Why"

Same ideas expressed in Fitter, Happier are expressed in this song. We're told to strive for some sort of ideal life, which includes getting a good job, being kind to everyone, finding a partner, getting married, having a couple kids, living in a quiet neighborhood in a nice big house, etc. But in Fitter, Happier the narrator(?) realizes that it's incredibly robotic to live this life. People are being used by those in power "like a pig in a cage on antibiotics"--being pacified with things like new phones and cool gadgets and houses while being sucked dry. On No Surprises, the narrator is realizing how this life is killing him slowly. In the video, his helmet is slowly filling up with water, drowning him. But he's so complacent with it. This is a good summary of the song. This boring, "perfect" life foisted upon us by some higher powers (not spiritual, but political, economic, etc. politicians and businessmen, perhaps) is not the way to live. But there is seemingly no way out but death. He'd rather die peacefully right now than live in this cage. While our lives are often shielded, we're in our own protective bubbles, or protective helmets like the one Thom wears, if we look a little harder we can see all the corruption, lies, manipulation, etc. that is going on in the world, often run by huge yet nearly invisible organizations, corporations, and 'leaders'. It's a very hopeless song because it reflects real life.

There aren’t many things that’ll hurt more than giving love a chance against your better judgement only to have your heart crushed yet again. Ed Sheeran tells such a story on “Page.” On this track, he is devastated to have lost his lover and even more saddened by the feeling that he may never move on from this.
amanda palmer posted a blog about this song and video. its in relation to a person she was dating at the time who drifted away from her. the astronauts must feel a similar feeling of extreme distance in space, ya?
also, the "i want to touch the back of your right arm" lyric is in relation to a tattoo of his that she sketched on one of their dates, which she really liked. and apparently that sketch was her only real memento of the relationship.
they fell out of contact for a while, so i think when she says 'i would gladly stay an afterthought/just bring back some nice reminders' that shes ok waiting for him while he does his own thing, as long as he has soomething to show for it, or as long as its worth it [for him and her.]
'the random frantic action' line is a direct quote from a book entitled "a short history of nearly everything" and which AP thought to be "one of the most beautiful explanations of how electrons work" in her opinion.
also, the Frost poem that she borrowed that line from is about being familiar with the darkness in a city, both literal and figurative. shes saying that although darkness may be present in obvious situations [as in the dark of night] it can also be hiding in unexpected places [in plain daylight] and she reminds him that they both have that knowledge.
This will probably just sound strange...But this song reminds me of Doctor Who. Mainly the Doctor's relationship with Rose in the last couple of series. I need to stop watching so much TV.
Hahaha. I totally see where you're coming from.<br /> <br /> Rose silently loving and admiring the doctor but the Doctor just not, openly, feeling the same way and just treats her as a mate. Roses longing for the Doctor so works!<br /> <br /> Geek ftw.
Ooooh, that thing about Doctor Who is interesting. I never thought about it that way. But I certainly will do now.
I think this is about someone is acquainted with a person who is always busy with others.
"is it enough to have some love... because everyone around you wants to look"
If you're involved with someone who gets a lot of public attention, everyone wants to know what's going on and there's no privacy.
"it is enough to have some love small enough to slip inside the cracks.."
Again, a need for privacy not found in celebrity status.
"..i wish you could remind me who i was because every day I’m a little further off"
The two are drifting apart, and neither are free from the whiles of daily life.
"but you are, my love, the astronaut flying in the face of science i will gladly stay an afterthought just bring back some nice reminders"
But she congratulates the "astronaut" on his/her accomplishments while reminding them to talk about his/her experiences.
"and is it getting easy not to care despite the many rings around your name it isn’t funny and it isn’t fair you’ve traveled all this way and it’s the same"
The rings are rumors/gossip/the things that made the person well-known in the first place. Fame isn't as glamorous as what the person perservered for.
"and i would tell them anything to see you split the evening but as you see i do not have an awful lot to tell everybody’s sick for something that they can find fascinating everyone but you and even you aren’t feeling well"
Everyone is looking, but she asks to spend time with him/her.
"and you may be acquainted with the night but I have seen the darkness in the day and you must know it is a terrifying sight because you and i are living the same way"
There's something going on in the life of the "astronaut" that parallels the narrator's life, and will lead into disaster.
I love this explanation, it's pretty much what I interpretated it as, only one of the many meaning the song could have. I was just wondering if<br /> <br /> "but you are, my love, the astronaut<br /> flying in the face of science<br /> i will gladly stay an afterthought<br /> just bring back some nice reminders"<br /> <br /> would rather mean that the narrator is proud of her 'astronaut' but she would enjoy some attention rather than be ignored for the 'astronaut's' studies.<br /> What are your thoughts?
I just want to add to our interpretation of the second to last stanza, it's kind of like she's demeaning herself ' but as you see I do not have an awful lot to tell' she's kind of saying she isn't as important as him and she knows it, she doesn't have an interesting story to tell or the media attention he has.
I am absolutely living this song right now. "Astronaut" is (at least to me) about loving one who does/can not love you back. Even the title implies that the person is far away, be it literal or otherwise. One of my favourites, for sure.
I love this song... but no idea what it's about :(
Just for the record:
"You may be acquainted with the night" is a reference to Robert Frost's poem, "I have been acquainted with the night." At the moment I don't have anything more to say on its significance, but there may be something interesting there, if anybody cares to look.
I noticed that too yay! Thought it was just me because I wrote a thesis on that poem :) here it is, so no one has to leave this beautiful website <br /> <br /> <br /> I have been one acquainted with the night.<br /> I have walked out in rain -- and back in rain.<br /> I have outwalked the furthest city light.<br /> <br /> I have looked down the saddest city lane.<br /> I have passed by the watchman on his beat<br /> And dropped my eyes, unwilling to explain.<br /> <br /> I have stood still and stopped the sound of feet<br /> When far away an interrupted cry<br /> Came over houses from another street,<br /> <br /> But not to call me back or say good-bye;<br /> And further still at an unearthly height,<br /> O luminary clock against the sky<br /> <br /> Proclaimed the time was neither wrong nor right.<br /> I have been one acquainted with the night. <br /> <br />
Amanda Palmer has a knack of writing thought-provoking and mood-evoking lyrics.
This song appears to me to be a dissatisfaction with her spouse.
She notes that she's not getting what she wants. Yes, he is an astronaut, committed to his work, but at the end of the day, who's his Final Frontier? Space, or Amanda?
It has a foreboding end to it, as she writes that things are going awry for him at work, and he's rapidly approaching the state of mind Amanda's been at this whole time. Maybe THEN he'll get why she is the way she is.
Maybe.
Ms. Palmer gave this link (annointed.net/Article388.html) in response to interpretations of the song.
It's about the wives coping with the loss of their husbands on the space shuttle Columbia.
I so did not think that this was literally about astronauts. I thought this was about being in love with someone who could barely love you back because there's something else their consumed with: work, war, being famous...And they may say they love your back, but they're dedicating so much time to that other thing that it's hard to remember that.
That's what I got, but if Amanda said it was about Astronauts...I guess that's the same thing, though.
i think amanda meant the song to be interpreted both literally and symbolically, like most of her songs. she likes to write her songs in a manner that almost anyone can relate to them. that's what i think anyway.
this song is absolutely beautiful. it has my favorite amanda-isms in it, the intro with banging piano that is sort of unnerving, but a beautiful chorus that balances it out, not to mention amazing lyrics. love it love it love it.
