And we both go down together
We'd stay there forever
Just try to get up
And I'm sorry this wasn't easy
When I asked you
Believe me
And never let go
Well, I'm thinking of the worst things
That I could say to you
But a promise doesn't mean a thing anymore
And this never will be right with me
And now you're trying to desperately
But I'm tongue-tied
And terrified of what I'll say
And then we both go down together
We may stay there forever
I'll just try to get up
And I'm sorry that this wasn't easy
When I asked you
Believe me
You never let go
But I let go
I could only sing you sad songs
And you could sing along
And you could see the melody
That's been calling out your wrongs
And this never will be right with me
And now you're trying to desperately
But I'm tongue-tied
And terrified of what I'll say
But I never told you everything
I'm losing hope and fading dreams
And every single memory along the way
And then we both go down together
We may stay there forever
I'll just try to get up
And I'm sorry that this wasn't easy
When I asked you
Believe me
You never let go
But I let go
And we both go down together
And stay there forever
Just try to get up
And then we both go down together
We may stay there forever
I'll just try to get up
And I'm sorry that this wasn't easy
When I asked you
Believe me
You never let go
But I let go
We'd stay there forever
Just try to get up
And I'm sorry this wasn't easy
When I asked you

We'd stay there forever
Just try to get up
And I'm sorry this wasn't easy
When I asked you
Believe me
And never let go
~As I see it they both fell in love and the plan was to stay in love forever and to try to get up from the bad times together.
~He asked her something that was obiviously hard for him to ask (like disbelief), and he wanted to believe and neither of them wanna let go, due to the whole being together forever.
Well, I'm thinking of the worst things
That I could say to you
But a promise doesn't mean a thing anymore
~So she messed up and she tells him, and even if she promises that it won't happen again He doesn't believe it.
And this never will be right with me
~He's not ok with what she did, because he still loves her
And now you're trying to desperately
~He's made up his mind to break up with her, but she doesn't want to break up
But I'm tongue-tied
And terrified of what I'll say
~whatever he says will hurt her
And then we both go down together
We may stay there forever
~They fell in love, Notice the use of words here.. now forever is a "may". So he's no longer sure that they'll be together forever.
I'll just try to get up
~Now he is trying to put himself back together
And I'm sorry that this wasn't easy
When I asked you
Believe me
You never let go
But I let go
~He broke up with her and it was hard for him to do so.. And in the begging I guess they promised not to let go of their love, but in the end he was the one who let go.
I could only sing you sad songs
And you could sing along
And you could see the melody
That's been calling out your wrongs
~He is sad over what happened and will only dedicate her sad songs that will call her out and what she did. And by 'you could sing along' he means you can recognize what you did wrong.
And this never will be right with me
And now you're trying to desperately
But I'm tongue-tied
And terrified of what I'll say
But I never told you everything
I'm losing hope and fading dreams
And every single memory along the way
~He was always too afraid to tell her what he really thought, how she hurt him when he still loved her.. he is gradually forgetting about her, the hopes and dreams he had in their love and the time they had together, Those are now memories that he forced himself to forget inorder to get back up again, to feel okay with himself again.
And then we both go down together
We may stay there forever
I'll just try to get up
And I'm sorry that this wasn't easy
When I asked you
Believe me
You never let go
But I let go.
Haha ok, so I can totes relate to this song. Cause this past summer my dad lost his job and got a job out of country. This was sucky news for me and my boyfriend but I had three months before I had to leave. We had our ups and downs during that time, being careful not to get too close because we knew there was an expiration date. Yeah so a month before I left he started pulling away, saying that he would rather have time to move on before he got hurt when I left for good. I talked him out of it, mostly because I just needed someone to be stronger than me. I mean I shouldn't have, because it set up what was going to happen later. I should have given myself time too.
So a week before I left his friend had this big party. I don't drink so even though I was invited I didn't actually go. I told him to have fun even though I would have rather he didn't either. The next day we hung out and he was acting really weird. Like barely touching me at all. Even sitting on a different couch. I kissed him goodbye and I think I knew it was the last time I would. I put my headphones on and listened to this song. I think the lyric that really got me was "You never let go, but I let go." Because he did and it was probably the right thing to do but I had begged him to stay. And then I was bawling my eyes out and sure enough I got a text saying that he couldn't do this anymore with a bunch of lame excuses and I just answered and told him I understood even though I wished I could have just ten more minutes with him because I was falling apart and needed him.
Anyways later I found out he had messed around with another girl at the party. Every time I listen to this song I cry.
"we'd both go down together and stay there forever" - the proposition.
is what he asked her, which the second half of the chorus states. Two people going down together? Come on. It's about 69, people.
The rest of the song is a reaction to this line- which is symbolized by it being heard first. After she rejected his proposition which was one of demonstrating mutual love and openness and comfort with one another (meaning she didn't feel the same way), the relationship got awkward - "tongue tied and terrified of what I'll say"
When he's singing sad songs, he says she can sing along - not she can sing harmony, or the completion of the aforementioned sex act.

He may have been involved with it in the past and that's where the "And we both went down together" line comes into play.
I don't necessarily think it's a one sided breakup since the song overall is very sad. It seems like they want to be together, but he knows they can't due to whatever circumstances and she won't understand.
I may be way off but this makes sense to me.
And then all the other lyrics are self-explanatory to this situation.
(they fall in love)
We'd stay there forever
(theyd stay together forever)
Just try to get up
(trying to get out of what they thought was love)
And I'm sorry this wasn't easy
(hes felling bad about something)
When I asked you
Believe me
(hes saying it wasnt easy for him to ask her to beleave him)
And never let go
(so i think he asked her to hold onto him and there love but he didnt mean it at all)
Well, I'm thinking of the worst things
That I could say to you
But a promise doesn't mean a thing anymore
(but this is where i changed my mind i think she did something, and broke a promise, and he would love to get it off his mind but he cant)
And this never will be right with me
(whatever she did hell never be ok with it)
And now you're trying to desperately
(shes trying to win him back or get him to spill whats on his mind)
But I'm tongue-tied
And terrified of what I'll say
(hes scared of letting words slip out, so he might be hiding his feelings)
And then we both go down together
We may stay there forever
(there both going down together, with whatever happened, i think she may of cheated)
I'll just try to get up
(hes trying to pick up his life again as best as he can)
And I'm sorry that this wasn't easy
When I asked you
Believe me
You never let go
But I let go
(so he asked her to believe him when he said this wasnt easy, i think he broke up with her and it wasnt easy for him and when he told her to believe him and not let go, was probably before he found out what she did, and now there over)
I could only sing you sad songs
And you could sing along
And you could see the melody
That's been calling out your wrongs
(where it says calling out your wrongs, meaning she did do something wrong, and thats all he has on his mind anymore)
And this never will be right with me
And now you're trying to desperately
But I'm tongue-tied
And terrified of what I'll say
But I never told you everything
I'm losing hope and fading dreams
And every single memory along the way
(he hasnt told her whats been bothering him, not everything anyways, and now hes losing hope in what they had, And the memorys are fading)
And then we both go down together
We may stay there forever
I'll just try to get up
And I'm sorry that this wasn't easy
When I asked you
Believe me
You never let go
But I let go
And we both go down together
And stay there forever
Just try to get up
And then we both go down together
We may stay there forever
I'll just try to get up
And I'm sorry that this wasn't easy
When I asked you
Believe me
You never let go
But I let go
And now you're trying to desperately
But I'm tongue-tied
And terrified of what I'll say
