You can't hold it too tight
These matters of security
You don't have to be wound so tight
Smoking on the balcony

Well it's like sleaze in the park
You women, you have no self-control
We angels remark outside
You are known for insatiable needs
But I don't know a thing

I've seen love
And I follow the speed in the starlight
I've seen love
And I follow the speed in the star-swept night

Yeah, pace is the trick
And to all the corruption in man...

I see you as you take your pride, my lioness
Your defenses seem wise, I cannot press
And attention's at demise, my lioness
Can't you hurt it some, I think I hurt it

I've seen love
I follow the speed in the starlight
I've seen love
And I follow the speed in the star-swept night
And now I select you
Slow now I let you see how I stun
Now I select you
Slow now I bet you see how I stun

To all the destruction in man...
And to all the corruption in my hand...

And now I select you
Slow now, I let you see how I stun
Now I select you
Slow now, I bet you see how I stun
Now I select you
Slow now, I let you see how i stun
Now I select you
Slow now, I let you
I always follow the speed in the star-swept night

...you don't hold a candle

Song Meaning:My fav song in "Our Love to Admire". I really tried to give a meaning to this song that suits every line and I think that I have done it. Well maybe I am not even close enough to what Interpol tried to tell us, but who cares.

"You can't hold it too tight
    These matters of security
You don't have to be wound so tight,
    Smoking on the balcony"

It talks about the "security" of women (but in life also men) that they have, so they cannot be hurt/wound from other people. We want our emotions to be secured, otherwise we are very vunerable. And we don't expose or show this security, cause we don't want other people to know that we have it.

"But it's like sleaze in the park
You women, you have no self-control
    We angels remark outside
You are known for insatiable needs
    I don't know a thing"

The sleaze in the park, is the hurt that a woman feels when her emotions are hurted. They have no-self control sometimes, and they show their feeling quite clear. We (men) remark outside, we try to understand what has happened and why you react like that. We think that you have insatiable needs that we cannot satisfy. I don't know i thind refers to that we haven't find a way yet, or we don't understand you at all.

    "I've seen love
And I follow the speed in the starlight
    I've seen love
And I follow the speed in the star-swept night"

Here a man is talking. He has seen love, from women, and be in a relationship that everything was going to fast. Also I think that the starlight may refer to the beauty that a woman give to a man, like the light of a star.

    "Yeah, pace is the trick
And to all the destruction in man"

Pace is the trick. In a relationship both sides must walk along, and hurry or be left behind. And the destruction in man, refers to the hurt that a man can do to woman and the other way around maybe.

"Well, I see you as you take your pride, my lioness
Your defenses seem wise, I cannot press
And detention's at demise, my lioness
    Can't you hurt it some?
    Think I hurt it"

The woman, after "clear expression" of her emotions, when the man didn't understand a thing, takes her pride. She is still the lioness of the man. He still loves her, but cannot press her defences. The woman's attentions die slowly. And then the man ask "Can't you hurt it some?", and it means the man's pride, the man's feeling. His own feelings. The man realizes: "Think i hurt it some" and he means the pride of his lioness. And in eschange he asks if she can hurt him to, and he know she will.

"And now I select you, slow now to let you
    See how I stun"

And then the man, after he realizes that he hurt his lioness and have been hurt by her, he selects her, and let her slowly, with the right pace. But he stuns, cause he does something that he doesn't want to do, he doesn't want to let her. And asks her "See how I stun?" so he can show her that he want his lioness back, and hopes that she will forgive him.

"And to all the destruction in man
And to all the corruption in my hand"

Here again he realizes what he has done, and what he is able to do to a woman without knowing.

    "You don't hold a candle"

I guess this is a song with not a happy end though. The woman doesn't hold a candle for her man, she does not forgive him. And they seperate from each other, with not many left to be said.

P.S. This may just be a meaning that I gave from personal expreriances, but this is what music and songs are all about.

General Comment:This song gets me so excited and I'm not sure why.

Out of all the lyrics, the chorus sticks with me like glue:

    "I've seen love
And I follow the speed in the starlight
    I've seen love
And I follow the speed in the star-swept night"

I know I have the rest of the lyrics to consider, but the chorus alone tells me that this is a man who knows love exists...he's seen it for himself, like a comet shooting across a starry night. He chases it and he won't stop going after it. Pace IS the trick because sometimes love is hard to catch, but he's not stopping.

General Comment:Personally, I don't feel this song is about any distinct scenario or situation (i.e. the jaded lovers, or any sort of typical romantic entanglement the lads of Interpol love to write about).

Instead, I feel this tune is a message to women - perhaps the sharing of knowledge from a consummate or new leaf turning over, predator ("corruption in man"). Almost like if we were privy to this anthropologist's ("we angels") take on human mating habits, and advising a would-be female on how to correct her behavior to be more successful.

There's a second perspective, possibly given in first person, for the suiting male ("I see you as...").

    ---
Breakdown of this interpretation by lyrics:

"You can't hold it too tight
These matters of security" - Long term relationship, maybe marriage?
    -----
"Well it's like sleaze in the park
You women, you have no self-control
    We angels remark outside
You are known for insatiable needs
But I don't know a thing" - Doing whatever it takes to 'get the guy' even if it means whoring yourself out or tossing aside one's personal beliefs. 'Insatiable needs' may be a jab at the sometimes attributed materialism of the fairer sex. Note the very withdrawn third person perspective of "we angels" - the interpretors of this scenario or behavior.
    -----
    "I've seen love
And I follow the speed in the starlight
    I've seen love
And I follow the speed in the star-swept night" - Simply enforcing his credibility for the advice, "I know what works and what doesn't".
    -----
    "Yeah, pace is the trick
And to all the corruption in man..." - Go slow, be wary. Men are corrupt, plain and simple - absolute power corrupts absolutely.
    -----
"I see you as you take your pride, my lioness
Your defenses seem wise, I cannot press
And attention's at demise, my lioness
Can't you hurt it some, I think I hurt it" - You're projecting your defenses and "pride" overwhelmingly. It's too easy to see you for who you truly are, and my attention has faded.
    -----
"To all the destruction in man...
And to all the corruption in my hand..." - Intermingling the third person "angel" narrator to the first person "suitor" perspectives - again calling out man for his propensity of corruption, and also a jaded self-loathing remark to BOTH narrator's own corrupt actions.
    -----
    "And now I select you
Slow now, I let you see how I stun
    Now I select you
Slow now, I bet you see how I stun
    Now I select you
Slow now, I let you see how i stun
    Now I select you
    Slow now, I let you
I always follow the speed in the star-swept night

...you don't hold a candle" - I've picked my prey and I slow down my behavior so you can understand how I "stung" or won the scenario.

A little egotistical goading at the end, "You don't hold a candle."

    General Comment:Completely agree

I think the first verse refers to the narrator.

"You can't hold it too tight
    These matters of security"

He's referring to himself being too controlling, watching a lover's every move so that he protects himself from being hurt.

    The second verse

"Well it's like sleaze in the park
You women, you have no self-control
    We angels remark outside
You are known for insatiable needs
    But I don't know a thing"

He is talking of women in the past who have caused him pain.

women having no self control and the line about 'insatiable needs' refers to his experience of women being unfaithful and not content with having just one lover.

    "I've seen love
And I follow the speed in the starlight
    I've seen love
And I follow the speed in the star-swept night"

I think this could either refer to the singer's folly in continually chasing these less than virtuous women or the revelation that he has finally found a woman worthy of his affections and who is faithful.

    The repeating of

    "you don't hold a candle "

at the end is a reproach to all the former women in his life.
He is saying that none of them compare (or 'can hold a candle' as the phrase goes) to this new woman whom he is enamoured of.

Song Meaning:So ive been listening to this song for a while (great song by the way) and there are a few lines which really stand out to me which may lead to a meaning. Here's a theory, its just my theory:

He is singing to all women (well all LOST women): You are known for insatiable needs
(insatiable- incapable of being satisfied or appeased)

Before going much further look at the most obvious line which is the very last: You don't hold a candle
meaning- to be unfit even to hold a subordinate position (phrases.org.uk/meanings/…)
I originally thought it meant, You are not as pure as you say you are (you aren't peaceful) but no it simply means she (the woman in the song isnt capable of shinning a light for her man or him in this case)

Women have no self control...but its the sleaze in the park (clearly she cheated on him or another with some random guy in a park or similar, possibly central park)

He says, NOW I SELECT YOU (not the other way around) now he stuns her, giving her a taste of her own medicine

In conclusion...she hurts men, she always has but not this time. He selected her this time and stuns her with Love (real love) It ends and she carries that with her forever, so does he (clearly). But now she knows the pain shes caused and thats whats important...If you go to the next song its a linear progression...He's all fired up and has something to prove now hes ready to take her on. Its an intense love story from beginning to end....Genius Interpole (I wouldn't be surprised if this whole album is about one girl..Our love to admire) WoW Bravo!

General Comment:i do love this song!!
    my favorite of OLTA
and everytime i hear it i feel ...aaaahh!..
i think its about love at first sight
but the other person dont see you
she is not in love of him, she just come and go with many other boys
the trick is in the way he could make her in love of him and he`s decided to do that

General Comment:I think this song is about a guy wanting a girl he's seeing to take things slow and not rush into a relationship. This is readily apparent by:

"You can't hold it too tight" = you can't hold love or someone you care about too tight, you'll push them away.
"You don't have to be wound so tight" = You need to relax and let things happen at their own pace
"You women, you have no self-control" = Women always want to rush and get clingy
"You are known for insatiable needs" = The girl needs too much attention and assurance
"Yeah, pace is the trick" = A slower pace will help them learn and grow together

    "I've seen love
I follow the speed in the starlight
    I've seen love
And I follow the speed in the star-swept night
    And now I select you
Slow now I let you see how I stun" = This is the most crucial. He's been in love and knows that if she can give him some space that he can love her more than she's ever known is possible. He will "stun" her.

The verse about the lioness maybe means that she is a tough girl, but she's still a little too needy. The "pride" could be a double entendre for 'pride of lions' or 'dignity'.

Of course, this is just my interpretation, and I'm highly biased right now because I'm going through a similar situation. I've been dating this guy for about a month and he wants to take things slow, so I'm having to fight my urge to be clingy (i.e. texting/calling too much). This song gives me hope, because maybe he really does like me and he wants our relationship to have a fighting chance. Rather than just rushing blindly into it. ::sigh::

General Comment:What the fuck is wrong with you people? Sorry, I don't like to cuss at people and be rude, but isn't it obvious the lyrics are 'And now I select you, SLOW DOWN, I let you, see how I stun'

Damn! I feel like I'm taking crazy pills! LOL Even if the lyrics here are wrong I thought it was kind of easy to hear. *shrug* It makes sense with the mentioning of the lioness and the album art. He's like a lion, selecting his prey, then he toys with it, chasing it and then slowing down, mesmerizing it and captivating it ('see how I stun'). There's my two cents.

My Interpretation:I really like this song, but I do think the lyrics are very abstract, which actually adds to it's appeal because it gives it a mysterious quality. The arrangement is rather strange too.

There is an interesting contrast in this song between crude sexuality; "pace is the trick", "sleaze in the park" can't you hurt it some?" and beautiful romantic imagery; "I've seen love, and I follow it's speed in the starlight" which is confusing, but I think it gives the song depth.

I think it is mainly about one woman; The Lioness, whom the narrator has had an intense relationship with, which is now over, but he thinks about and possibly still speaks to, I think the relationship is finished, becuase the statement "I've seen love" is in the past tense.

Allthough he loved her, The Lioness could be difficult at times, for example; when she is "wound so tight, somking on the balcony" she was also very sexual and acted in her "insatiable needs" with "sleaze in the park" and was quite intimidating, animalisitic and frightening, but had dignity and grace too, hence her nickname; "Lioness".

I think the narrator is ambigious in his feelings towards "the Lioness" he misses her but is also happpy she is gone becuase of their problems, and this song is about the grief, anger and regret people feel over breakups.

He has dated other women since, but feels cynical about them; how he selects them and stuns them, which he feels to be phony. None of them "hold a candle" to the Lioness, and the song seems to end on a fairly positive note, that he is either coming to terms with his breakup, or he is considering getting back with the Lioness.
