Oh, you and me, we're the same
Asking for more than the numbing existence
Offered us all

What did they say? What did they do?
To make you crawl back in
Despite everything that you've been through
You're still right here

where I left you

We can lift up our hands to the sky
Find all of those strings that they're pulling
and keep from falling back
Into our old rhythmic poses
Turning us into machines

And one of these days we'll no longer betray ourselves in any way
we won't all look the same way down
And one of these days we'll no longer betray ourselves in any way
and we'll all take the same way out

And all these illusions dropped on a sea of believers
Crowding around as they hunt me down and throw me out
While all the rest of the others
Bang their heads in the dredges

[x2]
And one of these days we'll no longer betray ourselves
In any way we won't all look the same way down
And one of these days we'll no longer betray ourselves
In any way and we'll all take the same way out

So don't give up on me
We can be still pretend
This is all just a game
That'll work itself out in the end

General Comment:Once again. This song is about religion limiting us. "We can lift up our hands to the SKY,
Find all of those strings that they're pulling and keep from falling back, Into our old rhythmic poses, Turning us into machines" Following the way of living life like religion tells us to turns us into people who act predictably like machines. The strings to the sky are being pulled by a perceived God.

And all these illusions (These illusions are the ideas taught in religion) dropped on a sea of believers (people who believe the illusions)
Crowding around as they hunt me down and throw me out (nonbelievers are outnumbered and often silenced by the loud demands of the religious masses.)
While all the rest of the others
Hang their heads in the dredges (Nonbelievers, as opposed to believers, are not well organized. Many nonbelievers claim to be believers just to fit in so they don't have to deal with the social stigma of being a nonbeliever. While John is literally screaming at the top of his lungs about his beliefs, many other nonbelievers are silent.)

Try looking at many of their other songs in the context of not believing in religion. I think you will be surprised that many (not all) are centered around this idea (especially on Deliver Us and The Eternal Return.)

General Comment:here's my take on it:

Oh, you and me, we're the same
Asking for more than the numbing existence
    Offered us all

    the singer and you have disparaging viewpoints on the world/life/what have you, but ultimately you're in this together;
everyone is trying to get more meaning out of their respective lives in their own way.

What did they say? What did they do?
To make you crawl back in
Despite everything that you've been through
    You're still right here

    where I left you

you and he went through some enlightening
experiences together, shortly thereafter parting ways. at which point, he continued down the path of righteousness,
as it were, whereas you soon regained your disillusionment with the meaning and reality of life, due to the influences of the demon(s).

We can lift up our hands to the sky
Find all of those strings that they're pulling
    and keep from falling back
    Into our old rhythmic poses
    Turning us into machines

the strings are the things, material or ideological, that make you vulnerable to your demon(s). to keep from falling back into your old rhythmic poses
(the behaviors/dispositions/things you did that lead to and accompanied your original disillusionment with the meaning and reality of life), which would ultimately
turn you into machines (going through the motions of life without actually experiencing it for what it really is), you would have to do some very introspective
thinking, which in this instance seems most simply implied as praying to god via lifting your hands to the sky.

And one of these days we'll no longer betray ourselves in any way
we won't all look the same way down
And one of these days we'll no longer betray ourselves in any way
and we'll all take the same way out

eventually you'll be truly enlightened and will live your lives as they were meant to be lived; you'll have a true understanding of the meaning and reality of life.
you'll truly be free of your demon(s).

And all these illusions dropped on a sea of believers
Crowding around as they hunt me down and throw me out
While all the rest of the others
Bang their heads in the dredges

almost everyone in our society is disillusioned with modern life. the extent to which it affects people is so great that it is practically inescapable,
and consequently the singer is constantly surrounded by extremely disillusioned people. people spend their lives working for money so that they can live what
they consider to be a good life, all the while being completely miserable, thus becoming greatly frustrated with their lives.

So don't give up on me
    We can still pretend
This is all just a game
That'll work itself out in the end

he sympathizes with you. you must realize that, the calmer your state of mind, the smoother things will go in your life. so don't take it too seriously.

General Comment:i think it might like kinda be about conformity...people doing these things to please others maybe cuz it makes them feel better about themselves, when really we should just be who we are instead of tunring on ourselves...but basically in the end were all gonna end up dead and anything we have accomplished might just mean nothing so will it really have meant anything
