Through the storms and the lie
Baby, you stood by my side
And life is wine

But there are days in this life
When you see the teeth marks of time
Two lovers divide

Sound meets sound, babe
Her echoes, they surround
And all that we need is one thing
Now what is there to allow?

Babe, it's time we gave something new a try
All alone we may fight, so just let us be free

And, baby, tonight
I see your lips are on fire
And life is wine

Now the windows are open, the moon is so bright
There's no one who can tell us
What love brings for you and I

Sound meets sound, babe
The echoes, they surround
And all that we need is one thing
Now what is there to allow?

Babe, it's time we give something new a try
All alone we may fight, so just let us be free tonight

Through the storms and the lie
Baby, you stood by my side
And life is wine

You feel the sweet breath of time
It's whispering its truth, not mine
There's no "I" in threesome

And I am all for it!
Babe, it's time we give something new a try
All alone we may fight, and feathers bend like trees in the moonlight

Babe, it's time we give something new a try
All alone we may fight, so just let us be free tonight

My Interpretation:Not to pileon here, but I have a couple observations I didn't see anyone post:

    1) The "sweet breath of time" affecting her, not him would be her biological clock.

    2) One of the biggest metaphors here is implied (not sure I'm referencing the right literary tool here, so please correct as appropriate). TEAM! There's no "I" in Team, is the phrase they are playing with. So that reference is meant to resound. And while a menage a trois may function as a sort of team, a family does even more so.

Pair the two of these observations together and it does look like their talkin' bout baby.

General Comment:I think it's really just about a threesome. I get the feeling that most of Interpol's songs are about sex, which is, like the singer said in a interview, a great source of inspiration.

Maybe that's what makes their music so intense...
And they do it so much better than those Enrique Inglesias and 50 Cent dicks.

Even though the narrator here is a guy begging for a threesome, he sounds intriguing. Now that must be art!

General Comment:Yeah it's meant to say "let us be three tonight" but isn't it amazing how many people are suckered by the title? Do we really think that Interpol reknowned for their kookiness and deepness would be that obvious? haha! No! I LOVE this song even the music and chord progressions tell you clearly this is not about sexual experimentation.

A threesome is not a permanent arrangement. The song gives a sense of permanence about the "threesome" because he talks about things they've been through so there's not a sense that the song is about a one off arrangement and if it was about a threesome why talk about the fact that "you've stood by my side" as in loyalty? No this song is not about sex guys.

He is talking about having a baby and bringing a baby into their relationship, he's saying that yes when we are alone together we may have our issues but if we have another person to focus on we won't. Many couples think about having a baby to bring them closer together (it usually doesn't work) but in this case, he's pointing out that they've been together through so much so what more is there to do? Also he's saying that time is whispering its truth that it's time they did that.

I love this song because it's so touching and being a in place where I am really ready to have a baby with my husband I totally understand what he's saying. There really is no "I" in threesome.

General Comment:I believe tophat (9.22.07) has found the meaning. An actual threesome (sexual) is just too blatant for this song. It would nullify the song's intensity.

General Comment:basically with the help of everyone's comments, ive pieced together my own take on the song. i think theres no single correct interpretation, every one makes sense, it's really how you see it. and your own experience kinda moulds ur interpretation of the song and makes it truly unique and meaningful to yourself. But personally i dont think the writer is referring to a threesome literally in the song either. it's a tad too vulgar/in your face and unlikely for an artist to do so in this manner. I think the threesome is, in fact, a reference to how selfishness should not exist in a relationship.

    Here goes:

(through the storms and the lie
baby you stood by my side
    and life is wine)

the first paragraph describes the relationship as one that was filled with problems, quarrels and lies. but despite that they managed to remain together. and while life was not always smooth sailing it was good

(but there are days in this life
when you see the teeth marks of time
    two lovers divide)

writer describes in general how from time to time, we see people around us splitting up as their relationship were unable to stand the test of time

    (sound meets sound babe
    her echoes, they surround
and all that we need is one thing
now what is there to allow)

and now writer is bringing the perspective back to his own relationship. sound meets sound simply refers to arguments from both parties, and how these quarrels generally continue and are not resolved, even though at the end of the day all that they want is love and to make the relationship work, yet there are so many disagreements between both parties, ie perhaps one is restricting the other and does not allow the other in doing certain things or certain behavior and vice versa

    (babe it's time we gave
    something new a try
    oh alone we may fight
so just let us be free)

self explanatory: writer concludes that perhaps they should consider breaking up as they are fighting too much, something new could refer to a new relationship or basically a new life without each other

    (and baby tonight
i see your lips are on fire
    and life is wine
    now the windows are open
    the moon is so bright
    no one can tell us
what love brings for you and i)

just like all relationships, there are times where you fight too much to the point that you feel like you want to end the relationship. And other times, you look at your partner with renewed feelings. At this moment the writer is feeling a renewed passion for his girl, and everything feels great and like it is going to work out at this point. But he also realises the uncertainty that surrounds the future of their relationship - that no one can tell whether things are going to work out between them

    (sound meets sound babe
    the echoes, they surround
and all that we need is one thing
now what is there to allow

    babe it's time we give
    something new a try
    oh alone we may fight
so just let us be free
    tonight

through the storms and the lie
baby you stood by my side
    and life is wine)

the above part is basically repeating the same stuff that has been explained before

(you feel the sweet breath of time
it's whispering it's truth, not mine
    there's no "i"
    in threesome)

As time passes, it eventually tells its truth of whether the relationship is meant to work out or not. Perhaps the writer has initiated the breakup and time has revealed to the writer's lover that he was going to break her heart, but it does not tell the writer's side of the story - that he had truly loved her, but at the same time feels that it is best for them to break up due to their incompatibility. And perhaps it was a difficult decision which he had struggled to make. Hence, this explains why there is no 'i' in threesome, just as how one shouldnt be selfish in a relationship and make a choice which is best for both parties

(and i am all for it)

writer thinks this is the best solution

    (babe it's time we give
    something new a try
    oh alone we may fight
    and feathers bend like trees
    in the moonlight

    babe its time we give
    something new a try
    oh alone we may fight
so just let us be free
    tonight)

the rest is also pretty much explained too

i really love this song, my ex burnt it in a cd among other songs for me when we met up briefly a couple of months ago. I'd stashed it somewhere and only listened to it recently, and somehow I feel like it's her song to me, as she was the one who broke my heart, but she has since moved on with a new guy and hence gave 'something new a try'. Although it cld be wishful thinking on my part, I'd like to think that she still likes me alot, but feels that we were never meant to be. Which was why she ended things.

It's really hard because after 1.5 years, im still not over her at all. And although i dont keep in touch with her as it is too painful for me. I still think about her alot. And i suppose in a way, this song helps to try and understand why things panned out this way.

    hope you liked the interpretation!

General Comment:Ok, first of all... the lyrics posted are wrong, fnava21 finally nailed.
There are so many interpretations, literally, poetic devices, some peolpe say that is all about sex and some others think that is about have a threesome to save a worn relationship, is just my opinion but, there's something more about this song, well...

Through the storms and the light/Baby, you stood by my side/And life is wine
But there are days in this life/When you see the teeth marks of time/Two lovers divide...

here, the guy is describing a relationship who grows with time and of course has ups and downs but still in love of eachother no matter what.

Sound meets sound, babe/Her echoes, they surround/And all that we need is one thing/Now what is there to allow.
Babe, it's time we gave something new a try/Oh, alone we may fight/So just let us be three

He's sure about the feelings for her, but maybe something else could make them more happy, something new, something fresh.

And baby, tonight/I see your lips are on fire/And life is wine/Now the windows are open/The moon is so bright/'Cause no one can tell us what love brings for you and I

The metaphors about the open windows and the bright moon refer that they have a good life together and realize that it's time, the path is clear and they can clearly see their future. When he says 'I see your lips are on fire' maybe refer that things are getting hot and they'll make love.

Babe, it's time we give something new a try/Oh, alone we may fight/So just let us be three/ 'Tonight'

It's a fact, tonight will occur. He's saying that they cease to be a couple to become parents and be three.

Through the storms and the light/Baby, you stood by my side/And life is wine
You feel the sweet breath of time/It's whispering its truth, not mine/There's no "I"/In threesome
And I am all for it

Again it's a love declaration, they have been through a lot of things together and as the wine cliche says: wine tastes better with time, so as life. Here, he's trying to say that they are getting old and reached the stage when don't want to be alone anymore, and he's completely sure and wants to start a family because they need to leave selfishness behind, because when you are a parent, nothing matters more than the family and that's why there's no I in threesome.

At least, is the best interpretation that can be given.

Song Meaning:i think this song is about how they had a strong relationship but now all they do is fight and how they're falling apart and how the girl seems to have lost interest and seems to be getting into something else with another guy but he loves her so much he's willing to stick around even if she wants the other guy.

General Comment:I thought the last time he says "let us be free tonight" was actually "let us be three tonight" furthering the theory that this song is, in fact, about a threesome.
