Adopting Sarah's heart (Was never gonna be easy) With an angel tattoo sinking beneath her belt (Sarah) And the dirty blonde sea-water (Sea-water gushing down) Chewing fingernails in her shit-eating grin (Sarah) They cut out her heart when (She was a little girl) And in the fishing boat she thought She saw the shadow of God (Sarah) He didn't smile at her and she decided (He never came at all) And when she died She was going nowhere, nowhere, nowhere Sarah, I want to be like you (Sarah) You know sometimes I want to live like you (Sarah) So I know how it feels not to feel (Sarah) Adopting Sarah's heart (Was never gonna be easy) Changing from black to blonde To black to blonde (Sarah) But on the dirty tarmac of (The tarmac of a melting motorway) Gave me her clothes and told me To take her place, her place Sarah, I want to be like you (Sarah) You know sometimes I want to live like you (Sarah) So I know how it feels not to feel (Sarah) Sarah, I want to be like you (Sarah) You know sometimes I want to live like you (Sarah) So I know how it feels not to feel (Sarah)

General Comment:I've always thought of this song as being about a girl who looks up to this other girl -- she's aloof, doesn't seem to care about anything. In "adopting" her heart, she wants to adopt the way this girl doesn't have one. When she says, "I want to love like you," she means that she wants to love like her just in the fact that she doesn't love. Maybe the speaker is infatuated with the other girl, and wants to escape the feelings?

General Comment:probably just a coincidence but this makes me think of 'the heart is deceitful above all things' - it has a sarah, the actress playing her has an angel tattoo on her belly, she dyes her hair from blonde to black and takes off her clothes and goes running around a road at some point. a large chunk of the novel/film is the way in which her young son (who was -adopted- by another couple but is taken back by her) looks up to sarah - even pretending to be her at some points.

General Comment:i totally dedicated to it a friend of the same name.

    but of only the words
"Sarah, I want to be like you
    Sarah
You know sometimes I want to lo(i)ve like you"

Cause once the entirety is to be understood, it seems to be a story of a lost and depressed girl.

but my sara is nothing of that.

My Interpretation:I think this song is retrospective. She is remembering when she was younger and she admired a girl called Sarah because she is indifferent and cool. But now she is older she has realised that it was silly; the lyrics "tarmac of the melting motorway" suggests Sarah has died in an accident and it was because she was too "cool" to care for speed limits, or something. The tone of the chorus suggests she is mocking her former self when she admired Sarah but now realises that her very coolness caused her death.

General Comment:Kereerar said it well, I think. I definitely agree that Sarah is this older, stronger girl that at the very least pretends not to give a shit about anything. The narrator wants to be like her so she can stop feeling the pain of life and love. It's both sad and appealing the idea of not being able to feel anything.

I also love the story book aspect of the album! Looks like the new one's gonna be similar what with Daniel and all...

General Comment:i agree with jamescrash. i love this song because my name is sarah and it's really eerie and cool to hear her sing my name over and over like that :P

I love how Natasha creates these characters- Sarah, Prescilla, Karen, etc. It makes her album like a storybook adventure with a dark twist or something.

General Comment:i believe this is about a young girl who looks up to this older girl. the older girl is your typical rebel; she's sexually uninhibited, indifferent with her emotions, sarcastic or mocking, and most likely atheist, from how the songs portrays her.

the young girl puts her on a pedestal and wants to be like her, and finally gets the chance when "sarah" decides to basically hand over her badass title. that's what it basically translates to when it says "take her place."

the whole cutting out sarah's heart and whatnot, it's just a metaphor for her being heartless and unfeeling to the emotions of others. the young girl knows it's not going to be easy "adopting sarah's heart" because it's not really easy to go from being a regular person to someone who really just doesn't give a (blank) about anything.

    my interpretation, at least.
