I wish more people commented on this song, or at least more about the MEANING (songmeaning, not songemotion)

One thing i'm confused about is "they say you go blind"
i'm guessing they are talking about masturbation here? But, is the whole song about masturbation? In the play the piano teacher and the jerking off during this song. But just listening to the first half you would think the song is just about crushing on someone and longing for them.

But then again, the line "it's almost like loving, sad as that is" could also be masturbation. I've just never heard anyone say my junk = masturbation.

this song is actually about having a unjustified crush. meaning, loving someone from afar, unbeknownst to them. everyone knows what it's like to have a crush on someone who doesn't know, and this song is just an ode to that secret love.

well I think Thea's lines at the end (which are identified here as Anna's lines) could be interpreted as being about a sexual fantasy.
I think that would be really cool, but it's hard to believe because the songs seem to really ignore girls' sexuality. All the guys get solos that are explicitly about masturbation/lust and the girls don't.

mockingsmile: I don't think the show ignores female sexuality. My friend, who has seen the show, tells me that all the characters are masturbating during this song. (male and female) Therefore, I think its safe to say that the girls in this song are indeed having sexual fantasies.

that's not true, the girls don't masturbate during this song. In fact, only one of the characters masturbates in this song, and it's a guy.

This is my interpretation.... I'm not saying it's the right interpretation, but that's the good thing about Spring Awakening: the songs are relateable and can mean what you want them too; they are up to interpretation. :D

OK, so, drugs--they feel good, but as we all know they aren't good for you. Some some relationships (or crushes, which is mostly the connotation in the song) may feel good, but that doesn't make them good. They can actually be harmful... but we all have our "junk," our hangups, the stuff that isn't what we need but that we can't turn away from.

Yeah, I've got junk. And my junk is a boy who I've had this on again off again thing with for years. It's not good for either of us... but I can't give it up, just like and addict.

I think the girls are singing about crushes and the guys are singing about masturbation. The line "they say you go blind" could go both ways cause people are blinded by love and if you masturbate too much they say you go blind.

maybe to tie up the discussion from above, it's about love or lust from afar and the way the song is performed kinda represents how it's different for girls and guys (girls will dream and talk/sing about it and guys will masterbate)

love the song tho!
