Lyrics for Fences as interpreted by ellie117

Fences Lyrics
I'm sitting in a room
Made up of only big white walls and in the hall
There are people looking through the window in the door
They know exactly what we're here for
Don't look up
Just let them think there's no place else you'd rather be

You're always on display
For everyone to watch and learn from
Don't you know by now you can't turn back?
Because this road is all you'll ever have

And it's obvious that you're dying, dying
Just living proof that the camera's lying
And open wide, cause this is your night
So smile, cause you'll go out in style
You'll go out in style

If you let me I could
I'd show you how to build your fences
Set restrictions, separate from the world
The constant battle that you hate to fight
Just blame the limelight
Don't look up
Just let them think there's no place else you'd rather be

And now you can't turn back
Because this road is all you'll ever have

And it's obvious that you're dying, dying
Just living proof that the camera's lying
And open wide, cause this is your night
So smile

Yeah, yeah, you're asking for it
With every breath that you breathe in
Just breathe it in
Yeah, yeah, well, you're just a mess
You do all this big talk, yeah
So now let's see you walk it
I said let's see you walk it

Yeah, yeah, well, you're just a mess
You do all this big talk, yeah
So now let's see you walk it
I said, let's see you walk it

And it's obvious that you're dying, dying
Just living proof that the camera's lying
And open wide, yeah open wide
Yeah, open wide, cause you'll go out in style
You'll go out in style

About celebrities who are being torn apart by Hollywood, paparazzi, pressures of being famous, etc.

One of the best on the album I reckon.

The first verse seems like Hayley's talking a celeb in rehab, but that's just me.

i like their songs, and the meanings to all of them are pretty unique, but this is soooo immature compared to their other stuff. don't get me wrong. i LOVE paramore they are so talented, vocally, musically, and lyrically, but i think with this album they could have done so much more. it's like a soundtrack for little teeny bops to sing to in their bathrooms. what happenedddd.

but other than that, this song is pretty self explanatory,
and talking about celebrities

this song is swing, which why it remins you of p!atd because all P1atd are swing.
but i really love the song.

and Riot! is really diffrent than awkif, and a little more aminstream, but not certainly at teenybopper level. it's not an amazing album, but it's not awful either.

but also models with eating disorders

it does have a p!atd vibe to it. but that doest bother me cause i really dont listen to panic, but they're good.

it seems like its about celebs and all their issues, and how they're always in the spotlight, and how they're portrayed to us. idk..just my opinion. it does seem a little immature, but i like it. its a good song.

yeah a little immature, exactly i agree. i wish they would have stepped it up becuase they have soo much talent. for some reason i think their main goal is to get onto MTV so they wrote more immaturely on this album?

does anyone else get that feeling?

but paramore is great, live they are amazing and on CD they are amazing too.

no matter what, just listening to hayleys vocals makes this band.

to me, this is one of the better songs on the album. it's extremely catchy, which most people are going to hate because they can see it playing on MTV if a video is made.

i do hope they make a video out of this. i can see hayley acting out the character. character being a soon to be washed up celebrity.

This song about themselves, their own fame. Paramore has been rising to fame astonishingly quickly. I think it deals with their own struggles. When I met Paramore, I told Hayley she was my idol, and she kind of just shrugged it off; she knows that there is more to fame that being recognized...its also the pressure of being recognized, deserting old fans when you hit mainstream, and other things that go with celebrity. I saw her walking down the street and I yelled her name, and she started to wrap her face in a bandanna so no one else would recognize her, but it was too late; a line of kids had started following her. It's about the invasion of private lives; she can't even walk around without being noticed (this was all at Warped Tour, in case any of you were wondering).

"This road is all you'll ever have..." it describes the fame that they've achieved as so high that they can never just be "normal" (unrecognized, common) again.

The miserable downside to fame and recognition. You have this image that you have to live up to as a celebrity. It's suffocating. You put up walls to gaurd yourself from the media and their harsh or appreciative criticism. Even through all these images of perfection, you lose touch with your own individuality and can't let youself be who you are so your restrict yourself to only the perfect or good image of yourself that you publicise to the whole world. When really by doing this you're only messing up your own pscyhe and complicating your stability.

"Yeah, yeah, you're asking for it
With every breath that you breathe in
Just breathe it in
Yeah, yeah, well, you're just a mess
You do all this big talk, yeah
So now let's see you walk it
I said let's see you walk it"

Basically once you get into the media industry or fame, your asking for it. The ups and Downs of being famous. Now you have to walk the talk and bite your tongue in. ahh the curse and blessing of being famous.

I disagree that the song is about celebs at all. Knowing that the members of Paramore are Christian, i think it's about Christianity and the struggle that "big talk" Christians have to always stay white-wall sterile. And about how totally meaningless it is when Christians talk so much about their faith if it's all just talk to them - when they aren't actually living the lifestyle their words reflect.
"You do all this big talk, yeah
So now let's see you walk it"
Every single line makes a lot of sense when applied to that definition.

DUDE!!! did anyone watch them on Steven's Untitled Rockshow when they took steven into their recording studio? Steven pulled their song chart off the wall and this one was named Avril!!!! So, heh, im thinking thats who its about...

"If you let me I could
I'd show you how to build your fences
Set restrictions, separate from the world
The constant battle that you hate to fight
Just blame the limelight"

_Avril has always been all about letting everyone knwo whats going on in her private life.
Don't look up

"Yeah, yeah, you're asking for it
With every breath that you breathe in
Just breathe it in"
She used to be all , "oh im punk... i hate you... i hate pop stars" and WHAT IS SHE NOW WITH THAT STUPID GIRLFRIEND SONG!!

"You do all this big talk, yeah
So now let's see you walk it
I said let's see you walk it"
I watched a TV interview of her saying that she like hilary duff and that they got along...pssssh load of crap is what that is...lol

LOVE U AVRIL!!! haha

Yeah, yeah, well, you're just a mess
You do all this big talk, yeah
So now let's see you walk it
I said, let's see you walk it

And it's obvious that you're dying, dying
Just living proof that the camera's lying
And open wide, yeah open wide
Yeah, open wide, cause you'll go out in style
You'll go out in style

i think this song is crazy amazing.
it DOES sound a little mainstream, but it doesn't take away from the fact that this is a great song.
i don't get the panic! vibe at all though.
i think paramore is a squillion times better than p!atd will ever be, hands down.

Personally I feel that Hayley's taking on "Young Hollywood". (For example, Lindsay, Paris & Nicole.)

- "i'm sitting in a room. made up only big white walls and in the hall there are people looking through the window in the door. they know exactly what we're hear for. don't look up just let them think there's no place else you'd rather be." : First, Hayley's putting herself in young Hollywood's position. The room, could be in a rehab facility or a jail cell. Because the celebrities today pop in and out of rehab and jail as often as they change their underwear. But I digress. They go to rehab and jail like it's nothing but everyone knows their business. But the celebrity has to keep smiling, like everything's okay.

- "you're always on display. for everyone to watch and learn from. don't you know by now that you can't turn back? because this road is all you'll ever have." : On display, means the fact that these stars are being followed all the time by the "paps" and they get thrown around these magazines. They can't turn back because they get so absorbed by the Hollywood Lifestyle and their going to keep making the same mistakes.

- "and it's obvious that you're dying, dying. just living proof that the camera's lying. and open wide, 'cause this is your night. so smile, 'cause you'll go out in style." : These celebrities are trying to pretend that their okay, when they aren't. And you see them in the tabloids all the time, "happy" as can be, when inside they hate themselves. Hayley's saying with the "you'll go out in style" is pretty self-explanitory.

- " if you let me i could, i'd show you how to build your fences, set restrictions, seperate from the world. the constant battle that you hate to fight. just blame the limelight." : Hayley's pretty much saying that if more people would be like her, keeping her private life private, not partying every single night, they would learn. And they should stop getting pissed when the "paps" follow them around, because they're pretty much asking for it.

- "you're asking for it. with every breath that you breath in, just breath in. you're just a mess. you do all this big talk. so now let's see you walk it. i said let's see you walk it." : She's saying that they all are fake, and in the end they need to face the truth.

I think that it's about a celeb in rehab in the first verse, and when they go there they have to pretend they're doing it for themselves, cause they want to, thus generating more publicity for themselves.
She's also saying how they're all fake and I think I perhaps agree with the eating disorder thing as well, cause most celebs have one! not that I'm being stereotypical or anything.
