Lets start it over from the beginning
Let's play for keeps so I know you can never get the best of me
Sometimes you have to and other times you serve
Who ever saves you and brings you to your knees
My love..

Beauty fades when she dies
In a red dress and alone
But it was the best of times
And you're right to love him
And you're right to want to
Close the door and lock me in
Break the key and chase the blood out of my vanes

Streaming down side streets
Where the city ends and the dead ends meet
Bite your lip and smile
I have many holes to fill and i'll find them all

She holds him in her hands
But when she lets go she knows
It's the last time that she ever will again and you'll find that

Beauty fades when she dies
In a red dress and alone
But it was the best times
And you're right to love him
And you're right to want to
Close the door and lock me in
Break the key and chase the blood out of my vanes

You're wrong
I am not alone
I was right
You were not the only one

And beauty fades when she dies
In a red dress and alone
But it was the best times
And you're right to love him
And you're right to want to
Close the door and lock me in
Break the key and chase the blood out of my vanes

Carve your name into concrete
So that they know that i'm alive

My Interpretation:On the "In a red dress and alone" it could be referencing the colors of wedding dresses, the traditional meaning of a red dress was someone who was believed to be a prostitute, so he could be saying she's a whore and alone.

Song Meaning:At first, I honestly didn't know what to make of it. After listening to it over and over, I've come up with:

I think this song is about a man who manipulates women and them murders them. He is then caught by the police.

"Lets start it over from the beginning
Let's play for keeps so I know you can never get the best of me "

So, basically, he is putting everything on the line when negotiating. He doesn't want the cops controlling him.

"Sometimes you have to and other times you serve
Who ever saves you and brings you to your knees"

With this, I think it means that 'helps' women who are in troubling relationships and changed their lives.

    "Beauty fades when she dies
In a red dress and alone
But it was the best of times
And you're right to love him
And you're right to want to"

He stabs her a bunch of times and he is saying (in third person) it was okay for her to love him.

"Close the door and lock me in
Break the key and chase the blood out of my veins"
I think he is just telling the police what he think they wanna do to him.

"She holds him in her hands
But when she lets go she knows
It's the last time that she ever will again and you'll find that"

I think that is when he stabs her and she falls on him, embracing him one last time before he leaves her to die.

    "You're wrong
    I am not alone"

I think this mean he is telling the police he isn't the only one like that in the world.

    "Carve your name into concrete
So that they know that i'm alive "

I think he wants attentions and wants to be recognized for what he has done
( Used then killed a bunch of women)

Maybe I am thinking too literal here, but that is what I came up with for it.

My Interpretation:I see this as more of a song about an unrequited love. Like, he's her best friend or something... Here, I'll just go through the lyrics.

"Lets start it over from the beginning
Let's play for keeps so I know you can never get the best of me"

Wanting to go back to the beginning of the relationship so that he can be more proactive. So that he can get her and then be done with it, instead of being stuck as the 'friend' and loving her more than anything else. Thus, she has 'the best of him', even if he doesn't want her to.

"Sometimes you have to and other times you serve
Who ever saves you and brings you to your knees
    My love.."

He can't leave her as a friend, regardless of how much he wants to. He loves her, he has to serve her, even if that love for her is hurting him, ie 'brings you to your knees'.

    "Beauty fades when she dies
In a red dress and alone"

All the times he's seen her hurt, she 'dies'.

"But it was the best of times
And you're right to love him
And you're right to want to"

He helped her through something here, and this is him repeating her justifications to herself. Maybe there was a relationship where it became a rape situation, and he stood by her, while listening to her justifications of it. 'It was the best time of my life, and I'm right to love him.'

"Close the door and lock me in
Break the key and chase the blood out of my veins"

It's almost like he's giving her permission to keep him there, in this odd slavery.

    "Streaming down side streets
Where the city ends and the dead ends meet
    Bite your lip and smile
I have many holes to fill and i'll find them all"

The girl is in a bad situation in her life, she's at the place where all dead ends dump you. And his only advice to her is to bite the bullet and push through it. Then he's referring to himself next, where he's saying that he knows how she feels, because he's been there, and he knows the holes she's trying to fill, and he's been trying to do the same thing.

"She holds him in her hands
But when she lets go she knows
It's the last time that she ever will again"

She's losing the relationship that she's been clinging to, she's going at it one last time, even though she know it's effortless. And the friend watches.

    "and you'll find that
    Beauty fades when she dies
In a red dress and alone
But it was the best times
And you're right to love him
And you're right to want to
Close the door and lock me in
Break the key and chase the blood out of my veins"

    Chorus.

    "You're wrong
    I am not alone
    I was right
You were not the only one"

In a way she always kept him there as the friend. 'You'll be alone without me.' He realized though- she wasn't the only person there for him, and he is not alone. He's ready to move on.

"And beauty fades when she dies
In a red dress and alone
But it was the best times
And you're right to love him
And you're right to want to
Close the door and lock me in
Break the key and chase the blood out of my veins"

    Chorus.

    "Carve your name into concrete
So that they know that I'm alive"

His memorial to his lost love- her name in concrete, her headstone, he's leaving her behind. And finally, at last, he's alive.

My Opinion:whenever i hear the chorus i can't help but imagine a baby talking to his mother from her womb (through the mouth of a man whose trying to go back in time to give his mom a message). As if he's telling his mother, don't have me, don't give birth to me :( - stop yourself from creating me before you regret it. If you don't have me, you won't have a miserable life. I know it's weird and probably grossly incorrect x\ but i can't help picturing it when i hear "close the door and lock me in" (from entering the world), "break the key (the man she loves) and chase the blood out of my veins (baby dies)".

    Beauty fades when she dies
In a red dress and alone (she's grown old and alone and her beauty has faded)
But it was the best times
And you're right to love him
And you're right to want to (she had a good run with the man she loved, but it didn't last)
Close the door and lock me in
Break the key and chase the blood out of my veins (stop before you go too far)

My Opinion:Ding, Ding, Ding.... Desaparecida you hit it on the head.

Kevin once admitted to having girls on the side whilst on tour, and if I remember correctly Tiffany or Sabrina left him for it. I'm thinking they left him for a different guy, and this song is the slap in the face/confessional.

As for the morbid thought of suicide, you are correct, and that is the meaning to that line. Kevin has attempted suicide twice.. Or once and contemplated it. Either way, I think this line is talking about that, and that this song is a general reflection of the death of his relationship with his (ex?)wife, and his true thoughts and feelings on it.

If you listen to him, you'll learn moat of the relationship songs are based on his failed ones.

General Comment:I think he did something to her so she left him because he says 'you're right to love him and you're right ot want to close the door and lock me in break the key and chase hte blood out of my veins.' it insinuates that she's so angry with him she doesn't even want to see him.
I also think he is bitter that she actually walked away because he says 'Your wrong .I am not alone
I was right. You were not the only one.' Generally these kind of statements are very in your face to say that it doesn't matter but in reality you're jus saying that because you want the other person to think you're doing fine without them. But you don't really feel that way.
He says 'beauty fades when she dies in a red dress and alone.' I think the red is the pain she bears. And pointing out the obvious, she was the beauty, but obviously didn't put up with anything. He says 'she holds them in her hand but when she lets go she knows it's hte last time that she ever will again...

The verse about the stree and town: I think the whole thing is about reparing. Bite your lip and smile is a fake smile of course but he wants her to do it for him because he has 'many holes to fill.' It's all the loose ends (where the dead ends meet).

The only parts that throw me off is the first and last: Let's start it over from the beginning and this time let's play for keeps so I know you can never get the best of me' insinuates there is something on her part. And the last IDK. maybe it's just in reference to the beauty dying. So it's kinda lying laying the love to rest but forever marking it as a pride thing 'so that they know that i'm alive.' Let everybody know that it isn't killing him, but he really knows it is

General Comment:The song is about a guy who probaby did something stupid, and his gf left him. She moved on, he didnt.
he wants her back, but she has found someone else.

and when this part in the song comes up,
    "Streaming down side streets
Where the city ends and the dead ends meet
    Bite your lip and smile
I have many holes to fill and i'll find them all"
i think its the guy the girl has now, speaking of intercoursing with this girl in ways known to a selected few, lol. but in bad way, like you wouldt want her to hear. and the main guy wants to tell her but wants her to be happy at the same time. hinting the part in the song where he sings "your right to love him, your right to want to" and decides not to.

and in this part of the song,
"She holds him in her hands
But when she lets go she knows
It's the last time that she ever will again and you'll find that",
maybe that the girl has been through a lot of bad relationships and if she lets someone go again, like this new guy, then she'll probably just give up on trying.

The chorus, the best part of the song in my opinion.
says to me that the main guy really loves her and wants back badly it seems, he almost seems suicidal with the chasing the blood out of his veins.

maybe during the second time the chorus comes up, he decides to tell her he doesnt trust this new guy, and should do something about. but she probably thinks hes just trying to get her back by making up lies.

but then this part of the song comes up,
    "You're wrong
    I am not alone
    I was right
You were not the only one"
The main guy was right the new guy was cheating with the girl. She was wrong, he was right.

Then with the last part of the song,
    "Carve your name into concrete
So that they know that i'm alive"
Maybe the girl thought her life meant nothing. The past relationships have gone wrong. Her emotions have been played and manipulated. Her emotions might have gotten the best over her, and decided to kill herself."Beauty fades when she dies in a red dress and alone" The guy might not neccessarilycarve her name but keep track of the days spent without her. konwing that shes gone, tells him hes not dead yet.

ah, i think i could have worded it a little better, but im not that great so yeah. Guy likes girl. Girl likes other guy, Guys suspects other guy, Guys tells girl, Girl doesnt believe, Guy ends up being right. Girl kills herself. Guy moarns her. thats bout it.

General Comment:I agree with Desaparecida on a few points, but I have a slightly different take on both "And you're right to love him/You're right to want to/Close the door and lock me in/Break the key and chase the blood out of my veins" and "You're wrong/I am not alone/But I was right/You were not the only one".

These words seem to show that he hurt her; and that she chose to die alone (most likely from a brokenheart-induced suicide) by 'locking him in', or rather leaving him somehow and leaving him to himself and his guilt (which would be inside him). Following the whole ring of the song, I highly doubt he was cheating on her, at least not by saying she 'wasn't the only one'. I think it more means that he hurt her very badly, and she's right to want to lock him out of her life and destroy him, but she was wrong about him being the only person to hurt her, and he was right about her either 1 - not being the only person being hurt like that (meaning that she had hurt him in the same way), or 2 - that he was right about there being someone else for him to love. As for being "right to love him", I'd think she kills herself over another guy.

    General Comment:It's "veins", btw.

To me, this sounds like a guy talking to his ex after she left him for someone else.

"Beauty fades when she dies," Probably not dies literally, but dies emotionally for him, she leaves him, and she's not as beautiful to him as she once was.

'In a red dress and alone," This sounds like a memory he has of her, maybe the first time he saw her somewhere and first fell in love with her. Or maybe she was wearing a red dress when she left him.

"It was the best times" The times with her were the best times of his life, and he can still hang on to that even though she's gone

"You're right to love him" self-explainatory, maybe the guy has some low self-esteem

"You're right to want to close the door and lock me in, break the key and chase the blood out of my veins" also indicative of low self-esteem. When she leaves, it's like locking him in a room, and she's the only one with a key and she broke it in the lock when she left, so he's stuck there. You know... metaphorically speaking. "Chase the blood out of my veins" sounds almost suicidal, but that might just be me being morbid.

What I find interesting is the part in the middle that goes, "You were wrong/ I'm not alone/ I was right/ You were not the only one" sounding like it might have been the guy had another girl on the side... or perhaps he only Wanted the girl to think there had been another.

That's my take, as melodramatic as it may be, hopefully it made sense.
