Lyrics for Hop a Plane as interpreted by delial

Hop a Plane Lyrics
I took the train back, back to where I came from
I took it all alone, it's been so long, I know
Imagine me there my heart asleep with no air
Begging ocean please, help me drown these memories

All I need to hear is that you're not mine
I'm moving east then, somewhere far away from the sight of my hands, the sight of me not moving
You can't just hop a plane and come and visit me again
I claim it's in my head and I regret offering

You take a second, take a year
You took me out and took me in
And told me all of this and then
You take a moment, take a year, you helped me out
I listened in, you taught me all of this and then

from a lot of the songs on this album it sounds like tegan was seeing someone and the boundaries of their relationship were questionable, i.e. the other person wouldn't say whether they were dating or just friends, or something else, and probably said that she needed time to think about it. "you take a second take a second, take a year take a year" and so tegan, who really likes this person just wants to hear that they're not together so that she can move on with her life, rather than have the pain of wishful thinking. i think the same theme is continued into 'soil, soil', and ends with 'call it off'

I think thats very accurate. I love the story told by all of her songs album. Amazing. I love her genius.

The whole thing just burns in me.

"All I need to hear is that you're not mine."

because when she hops a plane and visits its just heightens and reawakens all the feelings yet she leaves and its back to misery and a purgatory state where you want her and you cant help it if only she'll just want you back but if she doesn't you need to know to move on... oh but what if she does? just wait a little longer... a littler longer... seconds, days, months... etc,

but you can't convince yourself to let go until you hear the words.

ugh.

i love this song.

I'm thinking that this song is about either Tegan or Sara wanting closure in a relationship. Probably because she sings, "all I want to hear is that you're not mine."

This song reminds me of that movie moment when someone looks at their ex and says, "Tell me you don't love me." It sounds like there was a break-up, but she can't get her out of her head. She's wondering if all these strong emotions of love and lasting forever were just in her head, and all she wants is her to say she doesn't care so she can move on for good.

I agree with the first comment 100%

I like how she "took the train back", but her partner said "you can't just hop a plane".

Train=cheap transport

Hop a plane=casually hoping a plane, even though planes are more expensive. Plane=rock star, too good for whatever.

one of the best songs on the album. i love the

"You take a second, take a year
You took me out and took me in
And told me all of this and then
You take a moment, take a year, you helped me out"
part. so good. mmmm. it's sounds like she's frustrated and it comes accross so well.

it also might have to do w/ tegan and sara moving away from each other. tegan might b kind of pissed off abotu it, so shes talking about. like if u look at the end, teh you took me out and took me kind of has to do w/ like sara helping tegan out, but then now that sara's w/ emy and tegan and sara moved away tegan feels kind of removed from sara.

Basically, i think it means, she just got out of a serious relationship, and she is still in love with the person, so she has to leave the town in which they were together in for so long, and go back home to "drown the memories" of the relationship. She jsut wants the other person to say "yes, it's over." she needs a definate answer, because everything this chick is telling her is making her more and more confused. Ha, definately hits home :]

i think the uncertain, sort of ambiguous relationship bit is accurate.. but could this also have a more concrete meaning of tegan going back home?..

.. home i think is calgary, alberta which is east of vancouver (where she currently resides)

aw, pooty tang! i dont know

I think it's about someone that's messing with Tegan's head, saying they don't know if they want to be together, or they want to take a break, but still be able to see her whenever they want. Tegan, I think, is saying that's not ok (can't just hop a plane) and she has to be in the relationship or out of it, she can't have both.

This may be my favorite Tegan And Sara song. i have the cd with the video chapters and all i see when i listen to this song is Tegan belting out the word "year" while she pulls her headphone off. idk. i just love it. its very catchy and unlike other music their songs have real meaning.

its about holding on, and not being able to let go b/c your partner keeps you hanging onto something that may or may not go forward.

its about tegans ex girlfriend, it was a long distance relationship and she found it hard to let go of her because everytime she got close to getting over her, her ex would 'hop a plane' and come visit her and all the feelings would come back.

i think this is a song about tegan and a girl and i think they both liked each other but wouldnt say and they hit a wall

'all i need to hear is your not mine'

and tegan wanted her to say your not mine so she could get on with her own life instead of wait for them to admitt there feelings

I think everyone here has said basically anything I would have thought of, but I also thought that it could be that the person she is singing about has become a friend, which happens quite often, and she feels like the line between friendship and love is very blurred and she just wants her to make a statement, so she can move on.

...from in interview in 07 :]

Tegan on "Hop A Plane"
It was the last song that I wrote, that I submitted for this record and actually, initially, no one really liked it all that much but I think it grew on all of us. And for me, I really like this song, cause it was the end of this like sort of emotional journey I had gone on. It was like, basically I had fallen in love with someone and was trying to woo them. And it finally came down to the fact that like.. "Just tell me if you want me. And if you don't, then get away from me."
Interviewer: Yeah, what are the lyrics in the chorus?
Tegan: All I need to know is that you're not mine.
Interviewer: Yeah what's that...
Tegan: Well we'd been having a very like passive-agressive sort of you know like... I was having an emotional relationship but we never really talked about how we felt about each other, we'd talk like hours and hours and hours everyday and like...
Sara: They didn't hit that shit.
Tegan: Yeah I don't think you can say "shit" on CBC radio, can you?
Sara: Can't you bleep it out or whatever.
Interviewer: I think you can now.
Tegan: Yeah? Yeah basically we never hooked up. And we were basically dating and we talked hours and hours everyday and then I finally was like "What is going on between us?" you know. And I had written like all these pining, "come and get me", "save me from myself", "love me, why don't you love me" songs and finally I just like sent this song [Hop A Plane] to her and was like "what the fuck?"
Interviewer: You sent the song to this person?
Tegan: Yeah I sent all the songs to the person. I mean I was making it very clear that I was attempting to woo her through music because I had a hard time talking about my feelings in general conversation. So I would send each song as I went along and you know we had a rough patch, I sent "Call It Off" and you know like each song represented a chapter in the journey that we were taking together. And then "Hop A Plane" was the last song and it was sort of my way of saying like "if this isn't happening, you just need to let me know". Which, that did not happen.
Interviewer: And so how did it end?
Tegan: I mean it's over, I mean... never happened.
Sara: They didn't hit that shit.
Tegan: I didn't...
Sara: Say it, it's okay, it's part of the therapy.
Tegan: No it really wasn't about "hitting that shit" I really wanted to like marry the person. I was in a very desperate state.
Sara: You wanted to hit that shit and get married.
Tegan: Yeah.
Interviewer: Well it's created art.
Tegan: I got rejected. I had never been rejected before. This is my rejection record.
Interviewer: Ok well it's a great song.
Tegan: Thank you!
