Lyrics for Back in Your Head as interpreted by delial

Back in Your Head Lyrics
Build a wall of books between us in our bed
Repeat, repeat, the words that I know we both have said
Relax into the need, we get so comfortable
Remember when I was so strange and likeable?

I just want back in your head
I'm not unfaithful but I'll stray

When I get a little scared, I run, run, run
When I jerk away from holding hands with you
I know these habits hurt important parts of you

Remember when I was sweet and unexplainable?
Nothing like this person, un-loveable

for me this song is like when you first meet someone and you really like them and they feel exactly the same they can't get you out of their head. But then later in the relationship you find yourselves drifting apart because the part of you that your partner really loved about you, you've lost or you've changed. Then all you want is that very part of you back, because you want to be back in her head, and back to how it used to be.

I agree, it's something like that. It's a relationship song, about these two people who used to be really close but now they're losing their touch...

The not unfaithful bit, I think she's saying that she loves this person, but even so, she's still flirting with other people...I'm assuming because their relationship is crumbling and she needs that attention, but she'd never cheat whoever it is.

Amazing song, bottom line.

Those are good interpretations but I feel that she means something different. Like, their relationship is falling apart, because of her actions, and "[she's] not unfaithful, but [she'll] stray when [she gets] a little scared," is more so her commitment issues. Meaning, she gets frightened when she thinks the relationship is getting too serious or too far and she strays to keep it more relaxed and comfortable, and her significant other just doesn't want to deal with that. That's just my interpretation of it, and I love this song.

This song definitely makes it clear that the person wants back into someones head (haha) maybe because they broke up on bad terms. She obviously messed up, and she's sorry. Even though she is still kind of unfaithful to her, she still wants her back and she'll do anything to "get back into her head." Sounds to me like a song about unrequited love.

When I first heard this I was thinking what the hell?! It seemed so...poppy. And I know Tegan and Sara are pop...the good kind, but still, I was just a little bit freaked out. However, it has grown on me and now I love it. :]

I think it's about a relationship sort of going stale when one of the two involved changes. "Build a wall of books between us in our bed" sorta makes me picture an old married couple reading on their bed, a pile of books at their sides. Where's the romance/passion? "Repeat, repeat the words that I know we both said." Idk, doesnt that sound a little bit too dry? I think she's talking about "I love you"...but the way she sings it, it almost sounds as though the words have no meaning anymore. "Remember when I was so strange and likeable" The main reason why this distance exists between them now. One of them has changed. And that person wants nothing more than to get back in her head. "I'm not unfaithful
But I'll stray" She seems to fail at that continually and so she strays, never being unfaithful but definitely flirting w/ others.

this song brings back memories of a lot of girls from my past...quirky complicated types. basically, once I really got to know them their quirks weren't cute anymore but rather quite difficult to manage.

For me, this is highly similar to a situation I've been in. The lryics seam to mean-
"Build a wall of books between us in our bed" means, I think, they used to be close but their ideals on the world and their mind frames have seperated them from eachother, even when they're close.
"Repeat, repeat the words that I know we both said
Relax into the need" Would mean that they used to give their "Iloveyous" freely, and they seemed reliant on the love. When they say relax into the need, it's like they sort of just throw it around, because at this point they need to hear it and live off the reassurance.
"Remember when I was so strange and likeable" means when things were fresh, new and free and nothing was heavy, she seemed different and new and easy to care for.
"I just want back in your head" means, I think, he's put her out of his mind in a way, he's shutting himself up and she wants to bere there.
When she says "I get a little scared-" should mean shes worried about him, not about the committment [or maybe both, they sound possible] And she doesn't know what to do without him, and she feels like she's losing something important.
When she says Im not unfaithful but I'll stray, I do think it means sleeping with someone else. But in her heart, she still loves him but shes sort of wandering off where the attention/affection lies. or, straying into substances against his wishes?
"I know these habits hurt important parts of you" to me would mean she's obviously getting into something, I'm guessing substances, that she seems to rely on or being in the habit of doing as a coping mechanism?
"Remember when I was sweet and unexplainable
Nothing like this person, unlovable" I interpret as in the begining, she seemed different to him and caught his interest, but then she let him in and think he doesnt care or lost interest.

Or I'm just making this personal. lawl.

I definitely agree with yesterdaystomorrow1 for the most part. The only thing that I see differently is the "I'm not unfaithful, but I'll stray" line. I don't think the "stray" has anything to do with flirting with others but more to do with an emotional distance.

Also, to respond to I think that the line, "I know these habits hurt important parts of you," makes much more sense when taken in context with the previous line and with the fact that Tegan and Sara are gay, i.e. she knows the habit of jerking away from holding hands with her girlfriend in public hurts her.

"Remember when I was so strange and likeable" describes what it was like when they first met. Nobody's changed, but they've gotten comfortable with each other, like Moses19 said, her quirks aren't so much cute anymore as they are annoying, or at least 'normal'.

And I don't think that her straying is so much physical as it is emotional. Perhaps she's distancing herself from her partner because she's "a little scared" of how serious the relationship could become otherwise.

"Back in your head" is just to do with how when you have a crush on someone, you'll think about them constantly and they'll never be off your mind, or out of your head. Sara just wants that kind of passion and caring back in the relationship.

this reminds me so much of my last relationship. everything started out new and fresh as it's supposed to but after a while i lost interest. everything became old. his words, the things he did. it felt as we were on repeat. i never cheated on him (i'm not unfaithful) but i did let our relationship take a back seat to less important things (but i'll stray). perhaps it was because i was scared or naiive.

Yeah, I think it's about a fading relationship. "When I jerk away from holding hands with you/I know these habits hurt important parts of you" It sounds like the partner thinks she's more interested than she is. I think that the narrator wants to the emotional relationship ("I just want back in your head") that they once had.

This song contains a strange sort of...well contradiction in my mind. The stuff that is written about here, (I agree with the interpretations) seems so incredibly...erm, well i think it's a hard issue to deal with, to think about - the idea of a fading relationship, or loving your partner less than they love you. Yet the poppy, upbeat sound of the song makes the song totally random and strange as if almost to create a different message. I like it, i like the juxtaposition, i think it's been really well constructed. I think the way that you can take it as a light hearted song initially, but then (after looking into the meaning further) realise it's about a really difficult and heart breaking thing, gives the song levels and makes it so much stronger.
Well, just my ideas anyway.

MyNameIsIvy made a GOOD point but seriously, it's definitely not about a "him". it's about her relationship with her girlfriend, just to clear that up because it was seriously bothering me. anyone who knows t&s would understand.

nonetheless, good point you make

"When I jerk away from holding hands with you
I know these habits hurt important parts of you"

"Remember when I was sweet and unexplainable
Nothing like this person, unlovable
I just want back in your head"

i think the singer is desperate and craving for her lost partners attention and love again. she knows she hurt her by doing things that she doesnt realize she often does (habits) and just wants her partner to remember how she can be and forget all the bad things that happened inbetween.

and as moses19 & exclusif said
you just get comfy with quirks & each other and then you realize its just too much work to put up with it.
but you still really like the person or at least miss the satisfaction that you have someone thinking so much about you. the whole situation is confusing and tiresome.
it fits me right now

She's too afraid to open herself up.
Before, the other person knew only what she let them know about herself. But, somehow, they have gotten to know her more than she felt safe with.
She loves the person, but is too scared that it's real and is too scared to let herself be loved.

She just wants to get back in the person's head, meaning the person had not figured her out yet, and still wondered about everything she kept hidden. She wants to be mysterious.

And she "strays when she is scared" because she doesn't want to get too close this one person. When she's scared she plays hard to get.

Tegan basically said that this is Sara's song about "being a ho". Bahahahahahahahahaha.
Sara said that it's just about how she isn't going to cheat on someone, but that she might "be interested in other things."

i totally agree with yesterdaystomorrow1. I think something has changed in the relationship and that person wants nothing more but to get back into their head. Their relationship is either getting old and saying "i love you" has just become a habit now. The words have no meaning behind it for both anymore.

Great Song by the way :)

I think this song is about being in a gay relationship when you're not completely out. 'When I pull away from holding hands with you' is like when they are in a public place and she doesn't want her to touch her cause people might suspect something. And she's not unfailthful cause she won't cheat, but she'll 'stray' cause she'll get freaked out or scared about being outted and drop her girlfriend. I hope I explaned that right.

Totally can relate to this song from a past relationship so I believe its about finding new love with someone u become obbessed and fassinated to this one person. However, over time the relationship and in particular this partner doesn't find you so strange and likeable anymore...but you wish that they did hence "I just want back in your head".

I also believe that they relationship ended because the partner believed his lover was being "unfaithful" with another person because she pleads that she is not this, but she will indeed stray.

I think Sara is writing about Emy.

"repeat the words that I know we both said" - I love you?

"Relax into the need
We get so comfortable"-passionless, going through the motions.

"Remember when I was so strange and likeable"-Now the mystery is gone, Emy (I think) knows Sara (I think) so well that she likes her less, but loves her more. If that makes sense.

"I just want back in your head"-I want to be the thing that fills your head, like the thing you think about all the time, the person/thing that occupies your head all day long. I think it is a two way thing. I think she wants to be back in Emy's head, but also for Emy to be back in hers.

"I'm not unfaithful
But I'll stray"-Sara wouldn't physically cheat, but emotionally maybe she pushes her away. She concentrates on other things, she basically does what she is saying in the chorus about being out of someones mind. It's the same idea of having something on your mind all the time, either a person or something else. She thinks about other things/or other people even, instead of the person she is actually dating.

"When I get a little scared"-The scariest thing about a relationship.........You are so into a person, that you depend on them, they are 100% part of your life. You get to a place where it would just hurt too much to break up with them. That is very scary, but the worst bit is that the relationship is now missing the things that made it great at the start (That is why I don't believe in the union of marraige).

But I think at the end of the day, a relationship at this stage, where the people are practically married without the legal binding contract side, is perfect. It's like anything, things change, and you want to go back to how you remember it. But you can't, and thinking about it will just drive you nuts. To get to a stage like this in a relatioship is amazing, and disecting the relatioship and concentrating on the past is not a good idea I think.

This is just how I feel about the song.
