Lyrics for Firebreather as interpreted by Spinnaay

Firebreather Lyrics
Tell me, are you free?
Tell me, are you free?
In word or thought or deed,
Tell me, are you free?

While the gallows stand,
and bullets lance the bravest lungs?
We fold our hands and
Hold our tongues.

Tell me are you free,
When the fear falls on you?
Tell me are you free,
When the fear falls on you?

While the gallows stand,
and bullets lance the bravest lungs?
Will i fold my hands,
and hold my tongues?
Or let the flames lick at my feet,
and breathe in fire and know I知 free.

The flames will rise and devour me.
Oh, to breathe in fire, and know I知 free.

As much as I didn't want to, I've been listening to the two new songs all day.

Freaking wonderful and the intro is wonderfully heavy.

Here's what I have so far.
Some little pieces might be wrong, but eh.

Tell me are you free?
Tell me are you free?
What __________
Tell me are you free?

_______________
______ the bravest lungs
Throw our hands up
Hold our tongues

Tell me are you free
When the fear falls on you?
Tell me are you free
When the fear falls on you?

Tell me are you free?
Tell me are you free?
_____________
Tell me are you free?

_________
_________ the bravest lungs
When I throw my hands up
Hold my tongue
And let the flames lick at my feet
And breathe in fire
And know I'm free

Flames will rise and devour me
To breathe in fire and know I'm free

Oh, oh, oh
Oh, oh oh
Oh, oh, oh
Oh, oh, oh
(Know I'm free)

Oh, oh, oh
Oh, oh oh
Oh, oh, oh
Oh, oh, oh

I think parts of mine are wrong.

I've seen on other lyric attempts as
"Burn its lens, deprave its lungs"

and

"Fold our/my hands up"

i thought in the chorus it might be

"bombs explode the bravest lungs"

and it is definitely "fold our hands"

this lyrics are all wrong... from the alchemy index blog:

Tell me, are you free in word or thought or deed, while the gallows stand, and bullets lance the bravest lungs? We fold our hands and hold our tongues. Tell me, are you free, when the fear falls on you? Will I fold my hands or hold my tongue? Or let the flames lick at my feet, and breathe in fire and know I知 free. The flames will rise and devour me. Oh, to breathe in fire, and know I知 free.

the first time i heard this it sounded religious. maybe it means if you give up on religion, you'll feel free by not having to deal with doing the right thing all the time, but then the flames with take over.

It could be about people trying to test somebody about their religion.

"While the gallows stand,
and bullets lance the bravest lungs?
We fold our hands and
Hold our tongues."

It be saying that when people are trying to get you away from your religion you'll stand strong with it. Or it could just be like fender8822 said.

I think that this song is about a choice to deny or not deny Christ when the time comes.

Kind of a medieval approach to testing loyalties and faith.
The speaker is asking himself whether or not, when he is asked about his faith, he is going to deny Christ or confess his faith. And all the while he knows that confessing his faith will inevitably lead to his public execution (burning, hanging, or shooting), but denying Christ will set him free, at least physically.

So the main course of the song is about that internal struggle, and then at the end, the time comes when the speaker must actually make that decision. He chooses to confess his faith.

"The flames will rise and devour me.
Oh, to breathe in fire, and know I知 free."

Basically it says that he (the speaker) will choose to be burned, but not deny Christ. And then the second line conveys the readers satisfaction of his decision and the fact that he knows God will have mercy on him.

It is truly awesome what these guys do. Dustin has such phenomenal incite into the minds of so many Christians today, and the battles they fight mentally every day. He really hits the nail right on the head with an overwhelming portion of his songs.

Ok, now you can yell at me and argue to me that this song isn't about God, and that Thrice isn't a Christian band. Please do forgive me for believing what I see as truth. You have your own opinion, I know, but I pray to God that you can somehow see past your secular shackles and enter the realm in which Dustin and the other Thrice members exist. Please, for your own sake, take a step into my shoes, as a Christian, and then perhaps you might be able to retract a little more meaning from this song.

(And yes, I know that no one has yelled at me for believing this song to be religious yet, but it was just a preemptive argument. )

sabio, your second to last paragraph regarding people arguing about Thrice's lyrics and faith was brilliant. "Amen" is all I can say to that.

Oh, and your interpretation of the song was spot-on too.

I think the interpretation of this song can fit into other meanings besides religion like being who you truly want to be or who other people want you to be

Thrice has plenty of songs with religious or spiritual meanings, but I don't think this is one of them - at least, not directly.

To me, this song is about freedom of thought, speech, and expression ("In word or thought or deed, tell me, are you free?") - or, more specifically, the suppression of those freedoms. This can, of course, apply to freedom of religion, but I really think it's meant for the more general case.

The threat to freedom is represented by hanging (the gallows), firing squads (bullets lancing the bravest lungs), and being burned at the stake (flames licking at your feet, breathing in fire) - all traditional and brutal methods of execution and suppression. Rather than "fold his hands and hold his tongue" in the face of these threats, the speaker would choose defiance; at least he would die knowing he was free.

The message of this song is that without freedom of expression, physical freedom (from imprisonment or execution) is meaningless - that it's better to die with true freedom of thought, speech, and action, than to live under fear and oppression.

I think the meaning of the song is much more simple then all the religious meanings, while it is clear though that they are speckled throughout the song.

I simply think that the song is condemning people who smoke.

"Tell me are you free"
is simply asking why are you doing this? does smoking give you some sort of a sense of freedom?
and how "Bullets lance the bravest lungs"

and towards the end, he says "The flames will rise and devour me, to breath in fire and know i'm free." The only freedom granted from smoking comes in the end, where it devours, and kills you. Then and only then are you free.

I'm probably way off on this interpretation though.

Considering the fact that liner notes in Artist In The Ambulance mentioned at least one member of the band going out for smokes during the writing/recording of the album, I highly, highly, (highly) doubt Dustin could write something like this. Not too mention, nothing in any of of Thrice's other lyrics would indicate that Dustin would feel the need to condemn. I'm going with the the Christian viewpoint because I'm taking into account what Dustin has previously written. That, and the freedom of speech and freedom analysis. I agree, it's no use being physically free unless you act like it.

Amazing song. I think the song talks about how there's lots of violence and suffering in the world, but most people don't even care; they fold their hands and hold their tongues, so to speak. The only true way to become free of such pain is to breathe in fire, which means to become aware and be active in the world.
