We're told to strive for some sort of ideal life, which includes getting a good job, being kind to everyone, finding a partner, getting married, having a couple kids, living in a quiet neighborhood in a nice big house, etc. But in Fitter, Happier the narrator(?) realizes that it's incredibly robotic to live this life. People are being used by those in power "like a pig in a cage on antibiotics"--being pacified with things like new phones and cool gadgets and houses while being sucked dry. On No Surprises, the narrator is realizing how this life is killing him slowly. In the video, his helmet is slowly filling up with water, drowning him. But he's so complacent with it. This is a good summary of the song. This boring, "perfect" life foisted upon us by some higher powers (not spiritual, but political, economic, etc. politicians and businessmen, perhaps) is not the way to live. But there is seemingly no way out but death. He'd rather die peacefully right now than live in this cage. While our lives are often shielded, we're in our own protective bubbles, or protective helmets like the one Thom wears, if we look a little harder we can see all the corruption, lies, manipulation, etc. that is going on in the world, often run by huge yet nearly invisible organizations, corporations, and 'leaders'. It's a very hopeless song because it reflects real life.

I know! The annoying rhyming of bats and bats is finally some of what makes the song fucking incredible.
Even though the second part of the lyrics is fucking amazing, I like to think that the chorus of the song is a very weird and abstract description of a city, or maybe the society, where everything seems to be absolutely logical and organized, but it's in fact absolutely insane and with the weirdest administration of power .Art has become actually the easiest way to entertain and distract people from the abomination and life they are living but it's actually hypocritical, so it becomes symmetrical and at the same time antithetical with the idea of art in itself, and all this is what leads dan to the conclusion that our existence is no worth being if we don't know really how to live, and how to use our greatests capacities.

In that last part, I don't think he means "screw technology, let's go back to hunting deer". <br /> It seems to me like it's more like something along the lines of what VHEMT (voluntary human extinction mouvement) is trying to say.
Heh too bad the meaning isn't just get rid of technology, he believes the world won't thrive with us existing at all, which is true, the world is being worn down by us, we are a parasite, and soon we will destroy ourselves, his hope is that at least life in general will survive, simply without the human race.

It's about how if a species of animal goes instinct it has a major negative effect on the environment and the other species that rely on it. However humanity going extinct would only have a positive effect on the earth.
