The water's edge is where she waits
Lost soul still wandering
Meant to die, but she's stuck not crossing over

The other side is where he waits
His spirit reaching out
Meant to save, but she's too scared to take his hand

Living in a world without you (drowning in the past)
Is living in no world at all
So now I call on you

Remember me: I gave you life
You would not take it
Your suffering was all in vain
It's almost over now
Don't turn your back on Paradise

Feeling scared, she's prepared
To give up everything
She can't stand to feel like half of her is fading

He will choose the only way
To rid her of her pain
Take her soul now; the decision has been made

Living in a world without love (burning into my soul)
Is living in a worthless world
So I will call on you

Remember me: I gave you life
You would not take it
Your suffering was all in vain
It's almost over
Remember me; you were so young
How could I tell you?
Remember me: I am the one
Who saved your life that night

I was the one who would not
Abandon you
Even in death I was the one who would not leave you

I used my freedom to protect you
And all the while direct you
Do you remember me this time?
Even in death I gave you life
I gave you life

I wanted to deserve a place...
A place beside you

This time when I reach out my hand
It reached all the way to heaven

Remember me: I gave you life
You would not take it
Your suffering was all in vain
It's almost over now
Goodbye
It's almost over now
Goodbye
It's time I release you from this life
Don't turn your back on Paradise

General Comment:I think the message of this song is pretty clear really, the people who say it has a Christian theme are right, but you're all over complicating it. Here is my opinion, for one: the song has no mention whatsoever of drowning, the lyric is "the waters edge is where she waits", how does one drown on the edge of a body of water? then "the other side is where he waits, his spirit reaching out". If you pay close attention the imagery is of two people on opposite sides of a river, or at least some kind of body of water. A very common piece of Christian imagery/symbolism is crossing the Jordan River(or any river) as symbolizing death. And one very key idea to interpreting this song is its name "The Ministry of Lost Souls". "She" in this song represents mankind, "He" represents Jesus Christ, reaching out, drawing people in, offering them hope, telling them "don't turn your back on paradise". The idea is that we reject His loving hand far too often and turn away from Him, or maybe we are afraid. The song is symbolic for the human condition from a Christian worldview. It may seem biased considering that I am a Christian myself, but 3 members of DT are bold, practicing Christians, I don't think its going too far to say that they would write a beautiful, symbolic song about the Christian faith.

General Comment:It is somewhat intriguing that alot of people saw Persephone in this song. I think there are many more parallels between Eve and Adam, because she's waiting at the 'water's edge' and her suffering is a vanity or over vanity, whether willfully or not is left vague. Emmanuel Swedenborg would say she is in the World of Spirits being given the Door to Heaven by an angel. But she's 'stuck' between planes, waiting at the water's edge. The analogy is also taken up again to say something about perception in general. Always though it was 'walked into this other place, a place beside you,' seemed like something more visceral to describe since it majorly gives a feeling of perceptual logistics between Heaven and the World of Spirits. Oh, and 'take her soul now, the decision has been made' I think could be seen as an agreement to make love, that's the only place from where i get a sense of them being a couple. But, this song can also be seen briefly in certain parts as a communication from Dream Theater to their fans with lines like 'remember me' and 'i gave you life', sometimes lines like these make me feel that the artist is making a second sweep for some recognition. "Even in death, I gave you life" i think means to be reference to himself being a dead soul wandering as well, still he has a connection with heaven, and calls down the Heavens in an attempt to save her. This song reminds me of "Behold the Nightmare" by the Smashing Pumpkins, to me its about the exact same relationship.

General Comment:i think the line even in death i gave you life is about how near she was to drown and he managed to save her

General Comment:I'm guessing that this is basically a woman who is drowning and a man, whom she doesn't know, jumps in to save her. He succeeds in saving her, but he also dies in the process. She feels the guilt that he died instead of her, but he didn't mind helping her. Maybe after this incident they both shared with one another, they "fell in love" through the event, so he waits for her on the other side of the void between living and death and she has to decide how to deal with it. Does she wait till it's her time and meet him there? Or does she give it all up and meet him now?

A few lyrics meaning in my opinion: "Even in death I gave you life" I take this to mean that he died but she lived so even in his death he saved her life. Oh well, it's an amazing song and my second favorite on the cd besides Constant Motion and definitely in my top five DT songs ever.

General Comment:This song's structure reminds me of Endless Sacrifice. It starts off sad, and after a while it goes into a crazy instrumental, and then it ends soft again. Plus, they're both about 2 people that were somehow seperated.

General Comment:The way the vocals sound on the lines "Living in a world without you / is living in no world at all" almost give me goosebumps. James LaBrie does amazing vocals - this song, A Change of Seasons, Octavarium, Pull Me Under... Anyway, long story short, DT is amazing.

I hope they can manage without MP...

General Comment:It's about Jesus Christ. The woman by the water is the woman drew water from the Jacob's well in a town name Sychar, Samaria, where she encountered Jesus (in Gospel of John 4). "But she stuck not crossing over." She at first didn't know who Jesus was, confuse by what Jesus told her about Life Giving Water. On the other side is where he waiting. Jesus was explaining and showing who He really is, just to save her.

This song reminds me of the verse... "Neither will I forsake you, neither will I leave you."

no doubt, it's about Jesus Christ...

General Comment:Once you know it's about a girl who was saved from drowning by another man, the song kind of makes sense. However, I don't think anyone is 100% sure of the specifics of it - I know I'm not.

A thought I had though: The man saves the girl from drowning, giving up his own life for her to have his. However, she can't live with the guilt so she "turns her back" on life. I'm not sure whether she actually does kill herself or not, but either way she doesn't really live her life that he died to give her.

He sees the way she is living (or not living), so he chooses to "take her soul". However, by doing this he is basically killing her / forcing her to commit suicide. Because of this, he has to give up his place in "paradise" so that she can come there, mirroring the way he gave up his life so that she can live. This is why he says "don't turn your back on paradise".

Alternatively, the girl did kill herself. As you know Catholics say that suicide is an unforgiveable sin, so she wouldn't be able to get into heaven or paradise. However, the man then takes the punishment for her in a way, giving up his place in paradise for her. This seems likely - she was drowning so he dived into save her, drowning in the process but giving her the chance to live. Then, she commits suicide so is stuck in purgatory / going to hell / not going to paradise. He saves her, taking her place and giving her the chance to go to paradise.
