In regards to the meaning of this song:
Before a live performance on the EP Five Stories Falling, Geoff states “It’s about the last time I went to visit my grandmother in Columbus, and I saw that she was dying and it was the last time I was going to see her. It is about realizing how young you are, but how quickly you can go.”
That’s the thing about Geoff and his sublime poetry, you think it’s about one thing, but really it’s about something entirely different. But the lyrics are still universal and omnipresent, ubiquitous, even. So relatable. That’s one thing I love about this band. I also love their live performances, raw energy and Geoff’s beautiful, imperfectly perfect vocals. His voice soothes my aching soul.
Another day it's all the same
Another way to make it sane.
And here we are another breed.
Another train to make it seem all ok.
In and out of all these towns.
Spins me round, it takes me down, takes me down.
Lyin here oh what to do.
Same ole stuff it's the same old tune, the same old
tune
Give it up, give it out,
Give it in, or give it down.
But it's all the same
same old song, it's the same old thing
Cuz it waits, it waits on you.
Go to sleep, go to bed.
Lay it up, put down your head.
The day is o'er and the night has fallen
We'll do it all again, yeah we'll do it all again.
Give it up, give it out,
Give it in, or give it down.
But it's all the same
same old song, it's the same old thing
Cuz it waits, it waits on you.

No Surprises

Same ideas expressed in Fitter, Happier are expressed in this song. We're told to strive for some sort of ideal life, which includes getting a good job, being kind to everyone, finding a partner, getting married, having a couple kids, living in a quiet neighborhood in a nice big house, etc. But in Fitter, Happier the narrator(?) realizes that it's incredibly robotic to live this life. People are being used by those in power "like a pig in a cage on antibiotics"--being pacified with things like new phones and cool gadgets and houses while being sucked dry. On No Surprises, the narrator is realizing how this life is killing him slowly. In the video, his helmet is slowly filling up with water, drowning him. But he's so complacent with it. This is a good summary of the song. This boring, "perfect" life foisted upon us by some higher powers (not spiritual, but political, economic, etc. politicians and businessmen, perhaps) is not the way to live. But there is seemingly no way out but death. He'd rather die peacefully right now than live in this cage. While our lives are often shielded, we're in our own protective bubbles, or protective helmets like the one Thom wears, if we look a little harder we can see all the corruption, lies, manipulation, etc. that is going on in the world, often run by huge yet nearly invisible organizations, corporations, and 'leaders'. It's a very hopeless song because it reflects real life.

I interpret this song as a sort of... We do the same thing everyday. We don't try to change what's going on or who we are, it's all like a monotonous schedule that we perform everyday. I take it this way because a lot of his songs seem to have some sort or universal meaning to them. I feel that it may have something to do with how we act in our everyday lives just doing what we're supposed to, and not trying to change how things are run or who we are as people.
reminds me of a middle school kid during the lazy days of summer - he has a crush on some girl who doesn't seem to notice him or something. The chorus makes it seem like no matter what he does, he registers the same response from her (give it up, give it out...same old song, same old tune). At night he goes to sleep, it's another day gone by and the next day he'll just do it all over again to try to get her attention. Cute song. Found it on iTunes.
how come i can't find the full lyrics to this song anywhere? i'm so sick of lyrics sites just copying and pasting what other lyrics sites have.
the chorus is not complete, in this or any other one i can find. as it says above, the first few lines are:
"Give it up, give it out, Give it in, or give it down. But it's all the same same old song, it's the same old thing"
but then there's two additional lines, ending with "a-okay" or something that sounds like "a," and THEN "cus it waits, it waits on you."
i'd very much like to find the actual lyrics, instead of copied-and-pasted crap. so if anyone knows it, please help. i'll keep thinkin too
the first time it's:<br /> "Give it up, give it out,<br /> Give it in, or give it down.<br /> But it's all the same,<br /> Same old song, it's the same old thing.<br /> 'Cause it waits, hey hey,<br /> Call today, make it a-ok, 'cause it waits, <br /> It waits on you."<br /> <br /> and the second time it's:<br /> "Give it up, give it out,<br /> Give it in, or give it down.<br /> 'Cause it's all the same,<br /> Same old song, it's the same old thing.<br /> Call today 'n' say hey,<br /> Call today make it a-ok, 'cause it waits, waits."
