I think the song is about this guy, his lover probably was always all over him, "smothering" him with love and care, but he didn't know how to appreciate it, he probably wanted to "breath" without having his lover caring so much about him, he wanted freedom.
Then, he messed up really bad, his lover probably got tired of caring and loving someone who didn't seem to love back and dumped him. As says the old saying "you only learn to appreciate the value of the things after you lose it", he realized he loved his lover just as much and now wants his lover to take him back, to smother him with love and care again, that's why:
"Now I can breath, turn my insides out and smother me, warm and alive I'm all over you, would you smother me?"
first time I listened I got the touching love song vibe, but the more I listen the more I get the feeling it's a song about someone forcing themselves on the object of their unreturned affections. not angrily, but in a misguided way.
"surely you can take some comfort knowing that you're mine". as if she thinks something's wrong.
The smothering imagery, while directed at himself is still out of place, as if he sees those actions as part of a normal relationship.
The repeated use of "baby" makes me feel like he's trying to talk her into something while being "warm and alive" and "all over you", neither of which are things that generally come up in a touching love ballad.
I love this song, don't get me wrong, even with this reading of it.
